On Thanksgiving Day, I got up and decided to do my Speed Workout for the week. Irving even joined me (!!!!) I set my Garmin to do 100 Meter Strides (Sprinting 100 meters, then walking for 30 seconds). I was going to do it for as long as my body would let me.

The weather was PERFECT for running… totally crisp and breezy. I started going and felt great. I was running like the wind! Irving was walking and I did a down and back route, so everytime I passed him, we high-fived. I kept looking at my watch totally impressed with how fast I was going…. at the end of my workout, I saw this:

In 52:45 I ran 6.6 Miles!!! A total record… right?

WRONG! hahaha I spent about 3 hours calling people telling them how fast I was running and how great I felt… blah blah blah….

But then I realized that when I set the Garmin to do 100 Meter strides…. I set the whole watch into METRIC! So while I thought I was running faster than EVER before…. i was actually just running pretty average. hahaha My 6.6 kilometers equals about 4.1 miles

Oh well… I still completed a 4.1 mile speed workout and I guess I have to be thankful and proud of that. (I’m still laughing about this 4 days later!)

Thinking like an Athlete November 30, 2009

Sometimes I fall into a funk where I just don’t feel like a runner. I read all these great blogs where I see people taking running way more seriously than I do. And I get “runner envy”! I want to be as committed, determined and dedicated to running as they are, but sometimes, I find it so hard! I am starting to think that the difference between a runner and an athlete happens during the midweek runs. Yea, I can crank out 10 miles on a Sunday, no problem. Half-marathon without training? Piece of cake. Running 3 miles on a random Wednesday morning? No way, Jose! What is wrong with me?! I seriously have to muster up all the courage in the world to get out of bed during the week to run.

I was just talking to my friend, Sharon, about this last week. We saw some totally fit people running on a trail in Pasadena and I said, “What is the difference between them and me? Why do they just look like they belong out here and I’m just huffing and puffing swinging my arms hoping for a walk break?”

But it’s just dawning on me now that the magic has to happen during the week. So this week, I just sucked it up, set my alarm, and headed out the door for a 3.5 mile run… because that’s what athletes do.

This morning, I got to sleep in, and I met up with the LA Racers at 8a at the LA Zoo for an easy 5 miles in Griffith Park. There was 8 of us running together this morning.

It turned out to be more of a workout than I thought because of all the road construction in the park. My flat course turned into a pretty steep hill climb. But we conquered the hills at a 10MPH pace (which is pretty impressive for me!) and we felt great at the end.

The 5.01 miles took 59 minutes with an average pace of 11:47.

Nike is one week away, and I’m stoked!

I did 10 miles at Balboa Park… my last long run before the Nike Half Marathon in 2 weeks. It was pretty uneventful, and I felt great. I did the first 5 on my own, and the second 5 with the LA Racers. I didn’t eat breakfast before the run (which is usually a no-no) but I felt surprisingly strong by the end. Who knew?
