There’s Ice Cream in my Cake! August 20, 2013

This weekend, we celebrated my big 3-0. Irving surprised me by picking up take-out from Mozza (it’s been on my LA Foodie bucket list for a while!) The picnic pack came with two pizzas, dessert and a bottle of wine. Sounds like a party to me!
IMG_0080

We took our dinner to our favorite park and enjoyed our birthday meal under a shady tree.
IMG_0082

IMG_0088

We tried to conceal our ‘open container of alcohol’ behind the stroller. Shhh! We’re such rebels!
IMG_0077PS: Thanks for the cool picnic wine holders mom and dad!

The pizza was ah-mazing. Adele even ate a whole slice of mine! Considering she doesn’t really eat anything anymore, that was quite the compliment to Mozza!
IMG_0092

I was in the middle of taking self portraits….
IMG_0100

….and looked over and saw Adele getting into trouble. HAHA
IMG_0103

But don’t worry, that bottle was long gone by the time that picture was taken. Prosecco. Mmmm.
IMG_0105

The dessert was a decadent Butterscotch pudding with Sea Salt and whipped cream. MMmm. Pretty much the best picnic ever. I am one lucky girl.
IMG_0098
But that’s not all! Irving also surprised me with a cake, and we decided to save it for the following night. Check. It. Out.
IMG_0134

Let me set this up for you…. Baskin Robbins Ice Cream cake…. with cake on the bottom and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream inside…. and three scoops of icecream in little cones on top (Snickers, Peanut Butter Cup and Salted Oreo). Yep. Are you kidding? Nope, not kidding.
IMG_0135

I think Adele was pretty bummed it wasn’t her birthday. Look at that face!

IMG_0142

IMG_0145

Dude, she is like SO jealous of me right now.
IMG_0148

But then I let her eat the first ice cream cone off the top and she got over it real fast.
IMG_0154

IMG_0175

And if you’re wondering, she picked the Snickers one. Good choice Adele.
IMG_0164
I think my 30s are going to be pretty awesome because with a cake like that, how can they not be?!

From Surpris-er to Surpris-ee! August 17, 2011

So I was in Chicago to see my mom and my sisters, but Laurie didn’t know I was coming, so she was completely surprised to see me standing there in her living room at 7:30 in the morning on Saturday. We walked around the city all day, and when we came back to her place, we were exhausted. But then there was a knock on the door and we both thought it was the pizza man who we had ordered from.

Imagine my surprise (and Laurie’s) when my oldest friend, Linsay, walked in! We have been friends for 25 years! She was the first friend I ever had and we are still close today!! She was in town to see a college friend and when she found out I was going to Chi-town, she coordinated with my mom to surprise me! aweeee!!!! Now I’m the one who was surprised!
IMG_7154

She’s one of those friends that I don’t get to see very often, but when we’re together it’s as if we’d never been separated. We had so much to catch up on since her wedding in February!
IMG_7156

Laurie then announced “Is there anyone else I should be expecting this weekend?” hee hee. We took the whole gang to Ed DeBrevic’s for dinner. It’s kind of like Dick’s Last Resort, a restaurant where they make fun of you while you eat and make rude comments. It was very funny.
IMG_7160

IMG_7157

IMG_7159

They also did hilarious dances around the restaurant and the staff wears ridiculous outfits.
IMG_7168

And somebody told them it was my birthday that weekend and they brought me over their signature “World’s Smallest Sundae” which was just as it seems! One bite of ice cream with whip cream and hot fudge in a tiny shot glass!
IMG_7169

Awe, I can’t imagine a better birthday! So fun!
IMG_7171

IMG_7173

After, we hung out with everyone back at Laurie’s place and my mom surprised me with a homemade cake. (Don’t ask me when she had time to do that!) I was totally surprised and it was SO delicious!
IMG_7183

Laurie’s roommate is seriously a saint for letting all of us crash at their place all weekend! Thanks, Girl!
IMG_7185

And yes, Laurie totally paid money for that poster behind them. Sometimes, I can’t believe we are related.

More to come from Chicago! Good times ahead!

PS…. The Winner of the Vanilla Frosting Chips is Amanda! She shares my love of Vanilla!!! I will get your chips to you soon!! Congrats!

After our fabulous day at the Newport Mansions, we continued our journey over the bridge into Providence for the weekend. One of my very good friends from High School was getting married there the next day and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world!
IMG_6632 (2)

The Bride and Groom and all of our friends were staying at the Providence Biltmore, so staying there was a no-brainer.
IMG_6504

Our room was really nice, although we saw another room later on and saw that they had completely renovated it and installed flat screen TVs! We had room envy, but ours was plenty comfortable. We had a nice stay.
IMG_6499

And the view of Providence was really nice. See the State House back there?
IMG_6501

After relaxing in our room for a while (and escaping the heat), we ventured out for dinner a little later on. We didn’t really have a plan, we just figured we’d stumble upon something good. And boy, did we luck out! It was Restaurant Week in Providence!!!
Kelley Pix (299)

The Union Station Brewery had an amazing deal. Drinks and a three course meal for two for only $30. We’ve always wanted to give one of these menus a try, and tonight was the night.
Kelley Pix (300)

We started with some delicious crispy bread. Somehow that whole basket disappeared. It was fantastic.
Kelley Pix (301)

We had a nice time chit-chatting while the meal came out. We love exploring new towns and we were happy to be here! Irving had a nice looking beer…
Kelley Pix (302)

But I really enjoyed some Root Beer on tap! ***slurrrrrp****
Kelley Pix (304)
PS… like my new shirt ^^? I got it that week at the outlets with my mom. I thought it screamed New England.

We picked the caprese salad for our appetizer and it was delicious. I could have had this as my entree and gone home happy.
Kelley Pix (306)

But alas, there were two more entrees to enjoy too! First up was a Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. Does not require further explanation!
Kelley Pix (307)

And Irving ordered the burger with steak fries.
Kelley Pix (308)

And just when I thought I was stuffed to the gills…. they came out with a slice of Oreo Pie! The inside was cookies and cream ice cream! What are they trying to kill me, here in Providence? Holy man, this was awesome.
Kelley Pix (309)

We barely made it out of there alive! And when we got outside, we learned that the temperature had not dropped. It was still pushing 90 degrees at 9 o’clock at night! What the what?

We met up with our friends back at the hotel and caught up for a while. It was so nice to see them. I really miss my old high school group. It’s hard living so far away, but we had a blast.

The bridal party had an early morning wake-up call and we were exhausted too, so we said goodbye and hit the sack.

We knew the next day was going to be just as hot, so we sprung out of bed early to get a nice walk in before the sun came out. There was so much to look at! Providence reminds me of Boston so much. Those old brick buildings and the style of architecture are just so cute.
IMG_6506

We saw the fire cauldrons for the “Water Fire” displays they do throughout the summer. They put wood buring fires in those wire holders at night and it lights up the river! Sadly, we weren’t there on a night when they were lit, but I bet it looks awesome!
IMG_6507

I love college towns and was excited to find out how close we were to Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University!! Plus we got a nice hill workout in there too. Wowzers!
IMG_6508

IMG_6509

I love college campuses! I wish I could go back to school and be a student all over again.
IMG_6511

IMG_6512

IMG_6513

IMG_6514

We made it back to the hotel just in time to avoid a sudden downpour!!! I forget how the weather changes on a dime here! But they say rain is good luck on a wedding day! Though I’m sure that stressed the bride out a bit!
IMG_6516

IMG_6518

But the rain didn’t last long. It cleared up soon after and led the way for an absolutely perfect afternoon. We had to check out of our hotel, so we opted to enjoy a looooong lunch together at McCormick & Schmicks. IMG_6519

We weren’t really that hungry, but we had time to kill.
IMG_6521

And soon I was able to sneak a glimpse at the bride and her dad heading out to the wedding!!!! She was glowing, such a beautiful bride. She just looked stunning. =)
IMG_6524

And my friends in the wedding party looked amazing too!! Weddings are the perfect reason to get old friends together again! I miss it!
IMG_6525

And then we headed over to the wedding ourselves. They had an incredible venue. It was in the Aldrich Mansion in Warwick, RI. It was located on a 75 acre estate right on the water (across from Newport). It was built by Senator Aldrich, a prominent banker and investor, in the late 1800s. Soon after, his daughter, Abby, married John D. Rockefeller here! (See! Again withAmerica’s elite! I love the history!) And then later Abby’s daughter became Vice President of the United States under Gerald Ford!
IMG_6527

And as if that’s not impressive enough… they also shot the movie Meet Joe Black here!!! Now I have to watch the film again to see all the cool rooms in it!
IMG_6529

Adjacent to the mansion is a church that used to be a seminary. Instead of the pews facing the alter, they faced each other! The idea being that if the priests in training couldn’t see God in each other, then they had no business being there. Kind of cool! The Priest that married Katie and Mark was really funny. He kept it really light (there was no AC in the church!) I enjoyed hearing him speak.
IMG_6534

And the ceremony was beautiful. These two are so in love. They’ve been together for almost a decade and I felt so lucky to witness their exchanging of vows.
IMG_6571

Then it was time to celebrate!! I couldn’t wait to see inside the mansion! (And PS, look at the clouds! You’d never guess it had rained just hours earlier! They had a perfect day!)
IMG_6579

IMG_6583 IMG_6584

IMG_6587

IMG_6591

The back of the mansion leads down a great staircase to the open sea. Across the harbor was Newport!
IMG_6593

The cocktail hour was so fun because we got to explore a bit, catch up with friends and enjoy the venue.
IMG_6594

IMG_6596

Inside, the mansion was just as wonderful as you’d expect. The ceilings were sparking in gilded gold, and the paintings really brought you back in time. I loved how the lights made a nice mix between chic and modern with the historical and classy.
IMG_6602

IMG_6617

I hope Katie felt like a princess on her wedding day because she certainly looked like one. =)
IMG_6605

We had fun reminiscing about our own wedding day too. It’s crazy how fast it all goes by.
IMG_6609

I loved her flowers! Gorgeous.
IMG_6621

Gilded gold mirrors and a marble fireplace! How cool!
IMG_6623

Each of the tables was a place they had both traveled to! We were psyched that we were at the “Hollywood Table”! I think Irving might have even taken the picture they had displayed!
IMG_6626

Yum. Dinner was fun! Chicken in a Riesling Cream sauce!!
IMG_6634

And cake!!!
IMG_6635

Friends!!
IMG_6638

The dance floor was packed all night long. The DJ was phenomenal. Probably the best I’ve ever seen at a wedding. It felt like we were inside a night club. It was a blast!
IMG_6675

Dancing in “The Great Hall” sounds so cool, doesn’t it?
IMG_6682

We had a wonderful time. Congratulations, Katie and Mark!!

A Valentine’s Day Soiree February 15, 2011

Last night, Irving and I had such a Romantic evening. We headed up to Simi Valley to attend the ‘Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dinner and Dance’. It was such a great night, we ate, danced, laughed and talked. It was perfect.
 IMG_3573

Backing up a little bit, the event started at 6pm, which isn’t easy coming from the Hollywood area. We got dressed in 15 minutes flat!

BEFORE:
IMG_3537

AFTER:
IMG_3548

But we made it just in time. The Reagan Library is really a sight to see if you are in the area. The American History comes alive through their amazing exhibits. They just redid them all for Reagan’s 100th Birthday celebration.
IMG_3550

We had such a great time wandering through the museum on our way to dinner. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce to you the next President of the United States!
IMG_3559

And his first lady, Kelley!
IMG_3561

We’re naturals. And the first task on the job is to make a television broadcast to our country.
IMG_3551

You’re live in 3…2…1!
IMG_3553

IMG_3556

Then we arrived at the highlight of the evening. Seeing Air Force One.
IMG_3565

So much history was made on this aircraft. They call it “The Flying White House”. The Reagan Library website says: This Flying White House, tail number 27000, served seven U.S Presidents from 1973 to 2001, including Presidents Nixon, Carter, Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and George W. Bush.
IMG_3616

We literally dined underneath Air Force One!
IMG_3569

To our right, we could see Marine One too (The Presidential Helicopter!)
IMG_3572

We must have been the youngest couple there by almost twenty years, and we LOVED it. It was so nice to look around and see all these older couples still dancing, still happy, and still in love. I can’t wait to grow old with Irving and share these fun evenings with him. I just hope I can dance as well as them in sixty years!
IMG_3567

We were seated at our own sweetheart table overlooking the dance floor. It was so cozy and we had fun chatting.
IMG_3579

My handsome Valentine!
IMG_3578

But ok… the food. Oh My Gosh, The food! It was amazing. We started with some champagne.
IMG_3582

Cheers! To many more!
IMG_3584

Fresh Rosemary Bread
IMG_3581

The Salad: EPICUREAN GREENS with cheese, candied pistachios, sliced oranges and a raspberry balsamic vinaigrette
IMG_3574

I had the vegetarian dish this time: VEGETABLE RISOTTO with parmesan and asparagus spears

IMG_3585

And Irving had the Chicken: ROASTED ROSEMARY CHICKEN in a marsala wine sauce with Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus Spears and Carrot Souffles
IMG_3586

And for dessert: FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE with dark chocolate ganache, white chocolate mousse, fresh berries and raspberry coulis
IMG_3587

OHMYGOSH I’ve never had chocolate cake as good as this. NEVER. This was to DIE for. And the saddest part? We couldn’t even finish it. That photo above was per person! We each had our own. I tried to finish it, I really did. But I was far too stuffed. I eventually surrendered and watched the waiter carry it away with a tear in my eye. I will dream about this cake for as long as I live. Seriously.

After dinner, we headed down towards the dance floor.
IMG_3592

There were so many incredible dancers that we were a little intimidated. These guys know the waltz, the fox trot, the samba, you name it, they danced it!
IMG_3596

We found our place in a corner where our two left feet wouldn’t get in anyone’s way. It was fun though. We practiced a few of our wedding dance spins and had a blast.
IMG_3604

IMG_3607

To dance underneath one of the most iconic symbols of America was a little surreal.
IMG_3598

Down below, there is a bar that was gifted to the Library from Ireland. It’s a pub that Reagan visited when he was over there. They were going to tear it down, but instead, donated it. So neat!
IMG_3591

It was truly an event we will never forget. We feel so lucky that we have this stuff at our fingertips.
IMG_3599

At the end of the night, we got to take home the flowers from the tables! They were really cute.
IMG_3575

IMG_3612

Happy Valentine’s Day, Irving!

IMG_3618

And just for fun, here’s a flashback picture of us in this same place back in 2006!

Ashley’s family lives back on the East Coast, and they wanted to be part of the Baby Shower action too! So her sister and mom organized a ‘Skype Shower’ where everyone could “see” Ashley open up all her gifts!!

IMG_6060

It was SUCH a cute idea. All the gifts were shipped to my house so they would be a surprise! And they even sent us plates, napkins, balloons and favors that matched theirs!
IMG_6054

IMG_6059

The cookies I made last night!
IMG_6063

Look at this tower of gifts!!!

IMG_6065 IMG_6067

IMG_6066 IMG_6064

  IMG_6071 IMG_6074 IMG_6073IMG_6072

Before the shower, Ashley came over early and made me homemade crepes! (Learning how to cook, remember?)
IMG_6076 IMG_6077

It was so easy!
IMG_6080

The key is the nutella and the whipped cream (obviously!)
IMG_6079

Heaven!

IMG_6081

IMG_6082

Oops…should have been on the Baby Shower plates!
IMG_6083

The mom-to-be!
 IMG_6084IMG_6085
And then the skyping began!
IMG_6092

We even got to “see” the cake!
IMG_6095

And play all the games!
IMG_6097

Sisters!
IMG_6100

So many presents!
IMG_6104

Lots of wrapping paper!

IMG_6113

It was SO much fun to share this day with you, Ash! Can’t wait for the baby to get here!!

Prepping for a Baby Shower! September 12, 2010

One of my best friends, Ashley and JR, are having a baby soon, so today, Erika and I threw her a shower to celebrate!

But back up to earlier in the week when we started making the favors and the cake!

First Step: FAVORS!

We made chocolate covered pretzels!
IMG_5627

We melted down some chocolate to decorate inside the molds with:
IMG_5626

We had to paint all the details with a paintbrush:
IMG_5631

IMG_5632

And we melted down some chocolate for the base:
IMG_5628
IMG_5635

Viola!
IMG_5640 IMG_5639

All wrapped up!
IMG_5885

Second Step: Sugar Cookies!

IMG_5871

IMG_5872

IMG_5876

Then we had to frost them all!
 IMG_5878 IMG_5879

Third Step: Bear Cake!

Erika found this super cute bear cake in the Wilton Magazine:
IMG_5870

We Erika made the two layers of the bear first. and used frosting to stack it together.
 IMG_5880 IMG_5882

Then she got to work decorating with frosting!
IMG_5884

(I think my camera ate some of the detail shots of this!)

Erika pretty much made them and I watched (moral support!) And she was nice enough to let me lick the spoon. lol

IMG_5877

The Final Product! So cuuute!!!
IMG_5889

While we baked, the boys were jumping around playing the wii!
IMG_5886 IMG_5883

We had a BLAST planning the shower. I was sad Ashley couldn’t be there… but I guess we had to keep it a surprise!

Advil is my new best friend… January 24, 2010

So this week was a tough one for me. My shin splints were really flaring up. Earlier in the week, I went out and bought some ace bandages to wrap them. I thought maybe the compression might help? It felt ok, but I tried to do Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred, and before the warm up was even over, I knew there was no way that was going to happen. Shooting pain in your shin is never a good sign. I sat and cried because I was so frustrated. Sad.

But this morning, I was determined to still get my milage in. I popped some advil  and headed out to Balboa Park for a 10 mile run. We had a great group out there today, and the weather was PERFECT. I had my new dri-fit ski band on, and some gloves to keep my hands warm.

I ran the first 5 miles with my friend, Vicki. We had some great conversation as we enjoyed the scenery. The miles were flying by! We even added an additional mile in there, so instead of doing 10 miles today, I ended up doing 11!! And then I ran the 2nd 5 miles with my friends Peter and Tim. Peter is also doing Dana-Farber, and today was his birthday!!! And not only that, he is celebrating being in remission from cancer for the 2nd time! There was a lot to happy for this morning. Both those guys are super fast, and I was impressed that I was able to keep up with them.

Around mile 9, I started to lose my momentum. I could feel the advil wearing off a little, and I felt like I hit “the wall” (oh man, what am I going to do when I really hit the wall at mile 18 during the marathon?!) I was urging the guys to go on ahead, but they refused. They kept me going and made sure I didnt stop.

Tim was my personal motivational speaker today. He kept reminding me why I was out there today. My decision to train for a marathon comes with pain and tears. But there are so many cancer patients out there who don’t choose their pain. They physically don’t have a choice, they have to push forward every single day. My marathon training is literally saving lives. I almost cried at one point, it really drove home the point.

Then we started doing a little meditation during running: feel the air come into your lungs. Feel the oxygen in your veins. Your hands feel loose. Your shoulders are loose. Your legs are gliding across the gravel. I suddenly felt lighter and faster and we were able to push through and finish all 11 miles at a somewhat decent pace.

I did 5:5 intervals for the entire 11 miles. Total time = 2:14:03

MILE SPLITS:
Mile 1 – 12:22
Mile 2 – 11:51
Mile 3 – 12:57
Mile 4 – 13:16
Mile 5 – 13:02
Mile 6 – 11:13
Mile 7 – 11:11
Mile 8 – 11:46
Mile 9 – 11:56
Mile 10 – 13:05  (The wall!)
Mile 11 –  11:22

I am just constantly impressed at these times because that includes walking for 50% of the whole run. I walked 1 hour and 7 minutes and still had times like these. That is definitely going to save me during the actual marathon.

And since it was Peter’s birthday, we all headed out to breakfast. Before we even ordered, we devoured almost a whole cake! Breakfast of champions, yes?

I did burn 1100 calories this morning, so I guess it wasn’t so bad. haha. What a great way to celebrate a beautiful Sunday morning.

To support my fundraising, please consider a donation to Dana-Farber here
