Adele and I get home around 6p every night. She usually goes to bed around 7:30p, so there’s a lot of pressure to get as much time with her as possible before she goes to sleep. I miss her so much during the day and I really love our hour together in the evening. Irving is at work, so it’s just us two girls. Tonight was one of those nights that I always want to remember.

6p – Arrive home. Adele is asleep in her carseat, so I start dinner while she snoozes. On tonight’s menu: pasta with homemade pesto (from fresh Basil Irving bought this week). I’m usually not this ambitious, past dinners this week included PB&J, Grilled Cheese and a simple salad. But tonight, I was excited to make something yummy.

6:15p – Cook Dinner. Adele woke up in a good mood, so I dragged her exersaucer over to the kitchen so she could play while I cooked. She was loving it. She’s in a stage now where she cries whenever I leave her sight. So she’s happy as long as she can see me.

6:30p – Dance Party. When I turned the food processor on to make my pesto, the loud noise scared her and she started crying. I picked her up, we turned up the Kid Songs music and we danced around the kitchen together while everything finished up. She was smiling, grabbing at my hair and looking around. We had a blast.

6:45p – Eat at the Table. I ate my dinner while Adele played in her high chair next to me. We’re getting ready to start Baby Led Weaning soon, so I’m excited to get her at the table with us as much as possible now. She was content playing with her toys while I ate. It was a treat because usually I eat alone after she’s gone to sleep. We listened to more music while we sat.

And in case you want a video of Adele listening to B-I-N-G-O and you want to hear my annoying mommy voice… here you go!

7p – Bath Time. I gave a Adele a nice long warm bath tonight. She’s always loved the bath, and now it’s even more fun because she likes to play with her toys! She loves her cups, her duckies and her bath books. But tonight, she was mostly interested in playing with her washcloth. Everything goes straight into her mouth now. She also loves to practice sitting up! In the tub, this is especially fun because she can splash around in the water at the same time. She’s stay in there all night if I’d let her!

7:15p – Milk Time! After I change her, give her legs a massage with delicious baby lotion and blow strawberries on her soft little belly, it’s time to nurse her. We watch a Ken Burns documentary about the Civil War while she eats. She doesn’t eat great, but she gets enough to feel content and we play on the couch for a while.

7:30p – Cuddles. I take her into our room and play with her on our bed for a little bit. I sing songs to her, kiss her cheeks and cuddle next to her for a few minutes. Once I see her first eye rub, I know it’s time for her to go to bed. (awe, sad!)

7:45p – Bed. I think she had too much fun tonight and she’s having a tough time winding down. I go in to soothe her a few times and it’s still not enough for some reason. I end up picking her up and rocking her for a few minutes til her eyelids begin to droop (I miss rocking her to sleep, can you believe it?) Finally, I force myself to put her back down in her crib even though I want to hold her a little longer. She’s out like a light.

As a working mom, it’s all about squeezing it in and making the most of the time that you have. There will never be enough time with Adele, but I want to always remember that in nights like this, I’m squeezing the nectar out of life and giving her 110% of what I have. I made more fantastic memories of her in that 1.75 hours than I had all week. I really took the time to pay attention to her, to look at her eyes, to stroke her soft hair, to listen to her laughs, to watch her play…. This is what I always want to remember.

And now, I’m enjoying a cup of hot cocoa and admiring the christmas lights I hung last night. I’m so excited to experience this holiday season with my littlest friend. I hope she enjoys the sparkle as much as I do!

G’Night Friends!

A Saturday: Day in the Life October 27, 2012

Written at 10pm after a wonderful Saturday. This post is a little wordy, but I wrote it primarily as a journal entry for myself to someday remember what our life was like with an almost five-month old Adele.

___________________________

Today was the perfect Saturday. One of those days that made me so thankful for my little family. This is exactly how I envisioned it. This is what it’s all about. Days like today define happiness for me.

I heard Adele making some noise around 7:15a and went to find her on her belly! She knows how to roll back and forth now, but sometimes she gets stuck on her belly and needs a little assistance. I fed her and we all snuggled together in bed for a while before we all got up for the day.

We don’t really let Adele watch TV, but she loves our smart phones!

Then we skyped with Aunties EJ and Sarah for a little bit! So fun to ‘see’ them, they just got back from a week in Italy (jealous!)

Adele went down for a nap and we cleaned up the house, had breakfast and hung out. She slept for 1.5 hours! (So excited her naps are now becoming longer! Thank you, daycare!) Once she woke up, I fed her again and we left to do a few errands (Target, Lowes and Costco). Adele was awake for a little bit, and then graced us with a nice nap so we could grab some lunch after. She’s so great, we had her in her carseat for a good four hours while we were out and she didn’t make a peep. She just loves to look around, chew on her teething rings and coo at strangers. It kind of felt like life was before baby.

On the way back home, I fed Adele while we were in the car. (We use the Podee bottle for times like this! She can basically feed herself with it!) After a bit of playing back at home, Miss Adele was clearly ready for a nap, but she wouldn’t sleep. We tried both in her crib and in our bed with us. Irving did fall asleep though, so we let daddy nap and the two girls headed out on a walk. I had Adele in the front carrier pack and she was asleep with 5 minutes of walking, so I turned around, came home, and transferred her into her crib so she could sleep there.

I sipped on some tea and caught up on a few things while my two favorites were both snoozing away. Part of me was jealous, but I relished the quiet house and took advantage of my hour and a half alone.

Once everyone was up and the baby was fed, the three of us headed out on a walk together in search of some take-out for dinner. We decided to throw together our own meal from two different restaurants. Vegetable Tempura from a Japanese place and Pho Soup from a Vietnamese place. We also stopped at Trader Joes to pick up a few things while we were out too. So here we were walking down the street carrying two bags of dinner and one bag of groceries (and Irving was wearing Adele at the same time!) We chatted with some neighbors, looked at some Halloween decorations and listened to Adele make the cutest sounds as we walked. In fact, it was Adele’s ‘talking’ that sparked the conversation with our neighbor. She’s making friends for us already!

When we got home, Irving gave her a bath while I put away our groceries and prepped dinner. Then we swapped and I nursed her. It was waaaay past her bedtime at this point, but she was content watching us eat, so we let her sit with us while we dined.

Irving and I had a great conversation over dinner about how fun our life is now. We talked a little about the day she was born and how much she has changed since then.

She fits in so well in our family. She belongs here. She’s just so happy to be here, she lets us know that every day. I can’t wait to fill her beautiful little life with memories, experiences and wonders. Feeling very thankful tonight.

Today was my birthday! I had an awesome day with Irving and Adele. We spent the morning in the park enjoying the sunshine and fresh air with four other mama friends (pictures of that will be posted soon!) I didn’t want to do anything big this year since Adele is the best gift I could ever have anyways.

I can’t imagine ringing in the last year of my twenties without this little girl. In honor of my birthday, she requested to wear a party dress and a hair bow. Girl knows how to party!

After giving birth to Adele two months ago, birthdays have taken on a whole new meaning. So with that in mind, I dedicate my birthday this year to my mom. Thanks mom, for giving birth to me! Thanks for carrying me safely inside for 9 months and bringing me into this world with so much joy and love. Thanks for feeding, holding, burping, changing, rocking, bathing, walking and loving me. Thanks for comforting me when I was little (Fun Fact: I used to sneak into my parents room at night and curl up at the end of their bed.) And Thanks for celebrating with me when I accomplished things. Thanks for being my mom. Happy BIRTH day to you!

There is nothing like burying your toes into the lushest, thickest, softest grass you’ve ever seen. It really is the littlest things in life that make me smile. I took a moment then to appreciate all the beautiful things in my life at the moment.

Exhibit A: Baby sleeping under the shade of a tree. Perfection.

And next to said sleeping baby… a doting great-grandmother gazing lovingly on.

And as if that isn’t enough…. How  about adding in the world’s cutest bonnet? (YAY! She likes it!)

Yes, it is the littlest things that make me smile nowadays. I just feel SO lucky!
