A Pain in the Head… June 28, 2011

I think I’ve blogged about this before, but I suffer from weekly migraines. I can’t remember when they started, but they got worse the older I’m getting. I have awful memories of lying on my dorm floor crying because it hurt so bad. Then I discovered Excedrin Migraine, Gods gift to migraine sufferers everywhere.
[source]

Once I realized how well Excedrin worked, I took it at the earliest signs of a migraine. And over time, I noticed I was single-handedly going through a few Costco-sized bottles of the stuff a year. Averaging 4-6 pills a week.

Recently, someone pointed out that I was likely more addicted to the caffeine, rather than the medicine itself. This bothers me that I’ve become so dependent on it. I rather find out the root of the problem (if there is one) rather than self-medicate.

So for the past three days, I’ve been battling a migraine headache that JUST. WON’T. QUIT. I fall asleep with it. I wake up with it. This is just no fun.

The other night, I was in agony, and Irving came running over with a bag of ice cubes to put on my head. It must have worked enough because I fell asleep with it on my head.

My Migraine Triggers
-Too much sodium
-Dehydration
-Too much sugar
-Eating too little too late
-Not having caffeine
-Stress in my shoulders

So I’m trying to tackle these one by one and help live a healthier lifestyle overall. It can’t hurt to try, right? Here’s my plan for a while:

  • No more sugar. The only sugar I’m eating comes from fruit and bread. No desserts, chocolate, cookies, candy, pastries, etc.
  • No excess sodium. I don’t add salt to anything anyways, but I need to focus on making sure I’m choosing my food wisely. Of course this all went out the window when I ate a grilled cheese, pickles and chips yesterday at Canter’s Deli.
  • Drink. More. Water. This one has been easy lately. I’ve been so thirsty I can’t drink water fast enough. I hope I can keep it up. I notice I feel more balanced when I drink more water.
  • Eat smart, healthy, balanced meals throughout the day. I still have a morning snack (usually a string cheese), but I’ve nixed the afternoon snack. Drinking lots of water is actually keeping me really full.
  • I started drinking coffee a few years ago, so I’m slowly trying to wean myself off being dependent on it for caffeine. I’ve switched to tea every other day or so.
  • To get rid of stress, I try to convince Irving that I need shoulder massages, but I don’t think he’s buying it. But seriously, they help so much. And so do warm baths, stretching and yoga.

It’ll be hard to tell if these changes are working or not. I never really kept a headache journal, so I don’t have accurate information to compare it to. But I’ll let you know if I have any major breakthroughs or not.

If none of these work, my next step is to look at my dairy intake. I eat a lot of cheese, and I’m afraid to find out if that has anything to do with it. (Cheese can be a migraine trigger for some people). But I love my cheese too much to even THINK about cutting it out.

Jenna at Eat, Live Run wrote about her migraines this week too!

Do you get migraines? Got any tried and true cures?

In 2003, I lived in Europe for a semester and each weekend, we headed off to a different country to explore.  I was open to all kinds of adventures, but the one thing that I just HAD to do was skydive. So my friends and I took an overnight train one weekend and headed to Switzerland. If you’re going to skydive, you might as well do it in the Alps!

Last night was our first summer night at the Hollywood Bowl. Hard to believe the season is here again!
The show was a Grease Sing-A-Long! They played the movie on the big screen and everyone sang along! It was a blast!

But let’s back up to dinner! We met up with Katherine, Kaitlin, and a few of their friends.

One of the pest parts of going to the bowl is being able to picnic beforehand! We spread out our blanket and munched on some goodies.

I had a spinach & tomato salad with a drizzle of honey and some buffalo pasta chicken salad. Delicious!

Irving had that awesome sandwich I made him earlier. haha Wife for the win!IMG_6126

LA Bloggers!

And then we waited for the show to begin!

They put the lyrics up on the screen so everyone could sing along! It was a blast.

They also gave everyone a goodie bag before the show with props to use during the movie. I missed what all of them were, but the yellow fabric was to hold up during the drag race, and the pom poms were for the pep rally scene. And the bubbles were for the “beauty school dropout” song.

Such a fun night, it’s been a while since I saw Grease and I was surprised by how much of it used to go over my head when I was little. My favorite part of the night was when Danny and Sandy are in the drive-in and a little kid behind us asked his dad what Danny was trying to do. BAHAHA. Awkward!

PS. This was Irving’s FIRST time seeing it. Whaaaat? I think he liked it though.

Do you remember your first time Seeing Grease? Mine was at a fifth grade sleepover!

A Good Deed… June 24, 2011

When I was walking this week (while listening to New Moon on my Ipod), I found a crumpled piece of paper that piqued my interest. I turned around and went back to it, and found that it was someone’s Social Security card! Not that I carry my SS card with me (you really should keep it hidden away somewhere), but if I did and I lost it, I’d hope someone would return it. Identity theft is a scary thing!

So I did what any upstanding citizen would do. I turned it in at my local Social Securty Office.

Guess I did my good deed for the day. It feels good to do the right thing.

While, I was out, I did a few other important things. Like try to take my picture in front of Fresh & Easy.

Finally I gave up.

Right when I walked in, I was greeted by an Oreo. I love this place!

We’re heading to the Hollywood Bowl tonight, so I needed some picnic-friendly’ items. Stay tuned to see those later!

Put here’s a sneak peak. I made Irving a Turkey and Cheese sandwich on a fresh-baked roll. There’s something about making my husband a sandwich that makes me feel like a good wife. haha

Can’t wait for tonight!

The Elements of a Lunch June 22, 2011

Lunch was always my least favorite meal of the day. I used to be a pretty picky eater, and I’m sure my mom pulled her hair out trying to find something that I’d actually eat at school. Sandwiches were off-limits. Any kind of deli meat or eggsalad… no way. I didn’t even like PB&J (I know, what was wrong with me, right?!) I survived on cold pasta salads, veggie roll-ups and…. I don’t know, fruit?

But one thing was for sure, I always needed snacks. Not necessarily cookies or bad-for-you food, just something else to round out my meal.

And although now I eat PB&J, I still need snacks to eat throughout the day. My meals are not complete unless they have at least three (preferably FOUR) parts to it. It’s not that I need a lot of food, but I like to have a lot of components of food. I like to eat my lunches in stages. I usually eat my lunch over the span of four hours or so. I like to draaaaag it out.

Let’s dissect my lunch from today, shall we?

The Morning Snack
Today, I actually didn’t have one, but usually I have some crackers or something to tide me over til lunch. Today, I just had a few cups of tea to keep my mouth happy.

The Main Event
I had leftover Eggplant Parmesan today. Some whole wheat penne with Trader Joe’s Eggplant and some sauce and cheese on top. Yum.

The Dessert
Some red and green organic grapes for some afternoon sweetness. I also love grapes because they have a little bit of a crunch.

The Afternoon Boredom Fixer
Today I have a portion of baby carrots if I get hungry around 4:30. This will likely tide me over til dinner, which will probably be at 7pm. If I eat a snack before I go home, I avoid digging in and ruining my dinner appetite later!

The Just in Case
I usually have extra snacks. You know, in case I die of hunger from exerting so much energy sitting at a desk all day long. I have a cheese stick and some mixed nuts as options. Sometimes I’ll swap these for something above.

I also have instant oatmeal and goldfish in my drawers too. “Just in case”. Sometimes I peek over at what other people have for lunch. A salad, a sandwich, cup of soup. And I always ask. “Is that ALL you’re eating?” And they look at me like I have three heads. I mean a sandwich would NEVER be enough for me to have all day. I’d need pickles on the side, some fruit, some cucumber slices…. anything to round it out.

My only consolation is that at least my components are all fairly healthy. right? Am I alone here?

[EDITED TO ADD: The above picture was found by google image searching for “No Sandwich” haha].
