On Thanksgiving Day, I got up and decided to do my Speed Workout for the week. Irving even joined me (!!!!) I set my Garmin to do 100 Meter Strides (Sprinting 100 meters, then walking for 30 seconds). I was going to do it for as long as my body would let me.

The weather was PERFECT for running… totally crisp and breezy. I started going and felt great. I was running like the wind! Irving was walking and I did a down and back route, so everytime I passed him, we high-fived. I kept looking at my watch totally impressed with how fast I was going…. at the end of my workout, I saw this:

In 52:45 I ran 6.6 Miles!!! A total record… right?

WRONG! hahaha I spent about 3 hours calling people telling them how fast I was running and how great I felt… blah blah blah….

But then I realized that when I set the Garmin to do 100 Meter strides…. I set the whole watch into METRIC! So while I thought I was running faster than EVER before…. i was actually just running pretty average. hahaha My 6.6 kilometers equals about 4.1 miles

Oh well… I still completed a 4.1 mile speed workout and I guess I have to be thankful and proud of that. (I’m still laughing about this 4 days later!)

Thinking like an Athlete November 30, 2009

Sometimes I fall into a funk where I just don’t feel like a runner. I read all these great blogs where I see people taking running way more seriously than I do. And I get “runner envy”! I want to be as committed, determined and dedicated to running as they are, but sometimes, I find it so hard! I am starting to think that the difference between a runner and an athlete happens during the midweek runs. Yea, I can crank out 10 miles on a Sunday, no problem. Half-marathon without training? Piece of cake. Running 3 miles on a random Wednesday morning? No way, Jose! What is wrong with me?! I seriously have to muster up all the courage in the world to get out of bed during the week to run.

I was just talking to my friend, Sharon, about this last week. We saw some totally fit people running on a trail in Pasadena and I said, “What is the difference between them and me? Why do they just look like they belong out here and I’m just huffing and puffing swinging my arms hoping for a walk break?”

But it’s just dawning on me now that the magic has to happen during the week. So this week, I just sucked it up, set my alarm, and headed out the door for a 3.5 mile run… because that’s what athletes do.

Boston Marathon Application! November 23, 2009

If it hasn’t already been official…. it’s official now! I mailed in my 2010 Boston Marathon application this week!!!! I double triple checked that I filled everything in correctly. I still can’t believe I’m actually doing this. I feel like I’m on the outside cheering this girl on… and this girl is TOTALLY me!!!

In the official Entry form was the route map. I’ve studied this map before, even prior to becoming a runner and having the Boston Marathon within my grasp. I mean this is the most prestigious race in the world! This is the big time! But I was surprised to learn that the race doesn’t even ENTER boston til like Mile 21!

Some route highlights I’m looking forward to:

  • The Wellesely College Scream Tunnel at Mile 13
  • Running past Fenway Park (They always have a morning game, so when the game gets out, all the fans come out and cheer!)
  • And of course, running into Copley Square (the finish line)!

I was thinking about all of these things when I mailed my entry form in!!

But there are totally parts about Boston that totally terrify me:

  • Heartbreak Hill (the notorious hill at mile 21)
  • Disappointing my family and friends–who will be there cheering!
  • Being at the back of the pack!

I know I’m not the slowest runner to ever take on Boston… but I certainly aren’t running with the Kenyans, either. My previous marathon time was 6:28. I’m really aiming for 5:30 in Boston. But by Boston Marathon Standards… even that is…. slow.

If I was to qualify to run Boston… they think I should be able to run it in 3:40. HAHAHA If I was to maintain my pace now when I am 80 years old, I might qualify. lol It’s a cruel joke.

But regardless of my finish time, this race is 100% about me: beating my own record, celebrating my own 10-year cancer remission… and raising money for my the best cause I can think of: The Dana-Farber clinic.
