Ditching the Pacifier January 30, 2014

Filed under: Baby — Kelocity @ 3:19 pm

We introduced the pacifier to Adele somewhere around three months old. I started giving it to her when it was time to sleep so she could start associating it with sleep. At the time, I was still rocking her to sleep every night and I was desperate to find a way to stop. The pacifier worked and almost right away she was falling asleep on her own easily and staying asleep for 12-14 hours a night. Pacifier success.

Fast forward to sixteen months (October 2013), I thought it was finally time to start to wean her off of it. I posted this message on my Facebook page:

Spoiler Alert… after 20 minutes of crying (both Adele and maybe me a little bit too!) I caved and went into her room and gave it back to her. It’s not that I had a moment of mommy weakness (ok, maybe a little), but I really just didn’t feel like it was time yet. It didn’t seem right. I’ve heard that it’s best to get rid of the paci before it becomes a power struggle and I knew that meant I had to do it soon. I was traveling alone with her for Christmas, so I knew I needed it for MY sanity for the flight, so I decided to shelve the idea for a little while.

Instead, we started only giving it to her when it was time to sleep. If she wanted it, she had to go into the crib with it. When she woke up, she knew she had to take it out and leave it there. We also used it in the car when we wanted her to take a car nap.

Then last week, we had a rough day, and I decided it couldn’t get any worse, and on a whim, without much thought, I put her to bed sans pacifier. She cried for five minutes and fell asleep. We let Daycare know that we nixed it at home, and they were on board as well that very same day. The next night, same thing, protested for a few minutes, and then conked out. I was feeling pre-tty proud of myself. Wasn’t so bad after all!

Each night since then, she’s cried for 5-20 minutes or so. I think she still remembers it and wants it back. She called it “fire” (short for ‘pacifier’) and she still asks for it once in a while. It does make me sad because I know in her head she doesn’t understand. All she knows is this little thing felt good, made her sleepy, and was always there when she needed it… and now it’s gone. We didn’t do the whole “Pacifier Fairy came and took away to give it to the new babies” rational. I think she’s too young to get that anyways. It just disappeared (shhh don’t tell her i still have them all in the top drawer in the kitchen! Can’t bring myself to throw them out juuuust yet.)

She’s still sleeping through the night without it, although I will say she’s now waking up earlier. I think before, she’d wake up, find the paci in her crib, and then pass out again for another hour. Now, when she wakes up, she’s up. So now she’s out of bed at 7:15ish instead of her usual 7:45 or so wakeup (I know, I know, that’s not even early, but we did notice the shift once the pacifier was gone).

We’re hopeful that in a few more days there will be less tears at bedtime. Even though it only lasts 10 minutes or so, it’s so heartbreaking to listen to.

I don’t regret at all that we introduced it to her early. It gave us almost two years of quiet, easy sleep. I don’t think any new mom would argue with that! But the other side is deciding how to get rid of it later on. I just waited til it felt right, we’re still very happy with our decision.

I know there will be many, many more parental battles to fight down the road… I’m soooooo not looking forward to these difficult toddler years ahead. But knowing we can (and will) do a good job at each obstacle one at a time is encouraging.

Tonight… January 21, 2014

The first day back to work after a long weekend is always a rough one. We had a great little mini vacation up to Monterey (pictures coming!) and it was tough to mentally get back into the grind today. Needless to say, I was very excited to pick Adele up at school at the end of the day. I walked through the door and was greeted by a whiny little one who didn’t want to leave. (What? Didn’t you miss me?) I had to pry a book out of her hands and she was screaming at the top of her lungs as a result. I practically dragged her out of there, she was yelling at me the whole way back to the car. Awesome.

We had to stop at the grocery store on the way home and the car ride sounded something like this:
Adele: Waaaaaa! Waaaaaa!
Me: Do you want me to sing you a song?
Adele: Waaaaa! Yeah. Dadddddddy.
Me: Daddy’s not here, but do you want me to sing?
Adele: Yeaaaaaaa, waaaaaa!
Me: ABCD….
Adele: NO!!
Me: Ok… Twinkle Twinkle…
Adele: NOOOOOOO! SUNNN!  (Apparently I now take requests…)
Me: Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun, Please shine down on me…
Adele: DADDDDDYYYYYY!

Anyways, we get to Trader Joes, she’s tearing apart everything I put in the cart. Once in the parking lot, she tore open a carton of grapes that went flying across the parking lot. Whatever.

We get home, I have three grocery bags, a work bag, a purse and her daycare bag… and she wants me to CARRY her. Wasn’t gonna happen. We walked into the house with her crying three steps behind me the whole way. It was kind of funny.

Inside, I went to get her high chair so she couldn’t get into trouble while I unload the groceries. I turn the corner into the kitchen and she’s standing there with drops of blood everywhere… on the floor, on blankie, on her shirt. What the heck happened in the 10 seconds I turned my back? Who knows. I still don’t know what exactly happened.

After dinner… I fill up the tub, turn to throw something away (2 feet from the tub) and I turn back and she has fallen INTO the tub… clothes, shoes, jacket. Everything. Do you know how hard it is to peel wet jeggings off a squirming toddler? I gave her a quick scrub down and then dropped the towel into the tub as I went to pluck her out. Awesome.

After my awesome night, I decided it can’t get any worse…. so I figured it would be the PERFECT time to put her to bed without the pacifier. I tucked her in (with puppy, kitty, monkey, bunny, ducky and three blankets) and crossed my fingers. She cried for five minutes… and fell asleep. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Even after all the bad luck tonight, apparently I earned a badge on my mom sash. Thankyouverymuch.

Feeling on top of my game tonight and pr-etty proud. I love that girl. She’s lucky she’s cute.

Guess who is 19 Months old?
IMG_3675

19 Months was a big one. So many huge changes, giant leaps and adventures. She spent half of the past month in New England, so being out of her routine could have added to these big developments, or maybe just a coincidence. While I’m loving this full transition into toddlerhood, I also find myself still a little anxious about it as well (I wrote about it a little bit here). Some things have become noticeably easier, but then in other ways, it’s also tougher. Irving and I keep reminding ourselves that we’re learning together. Adele doesn’t know how to be the perfect toddler, and we don’t know how to be the perfect parents. But patience, listening, showing interest and finding those teachable moments has been an exciting challenge. I’d say we’re doing a pretty good job so far, so maybe there’s not much to fear after all.

SLEEP
I hate to tell you guys, that Adele’s still an amazing sleeper. She goes to sleep between 6:30p and 7:30p and sleeps for 13-14 hours straight. Both days this weekend she’s slept past 9am. (I know, moms everywhere are rolling their eyes…).  Even with all that sleep, she’s still giving me one 1-2 hour nap a day as well. (Naps=sanity for mommy, so I’m grateful for that!) She’s still going to bed with her doggy and pacifier (oh, the pacifier, I both hate and love you). This month we also introduced blankets and a small pillow.

FOOD
You guys…. she doesn’t throw food on the floor anymore! At all!!! Sometime this month I noticed I hadn’t had to clean the floor every night after dinner! So glad that phase is over! She also got her appetite back this month and went from eating only a few bites at meals to asking for seconds (and thirds!). Maybe we’ve got a growth spurt on the horizon. She’s still a little bit picky, but she’s eating more of a variety than in previous months too. I think we’ve turned a food corner! Her favorite foods this month are: Apples, Oranges, Blackberries, Blueberries, crackers, alphabet cookies, minestrone soup, cereal with milk, anything dipped in sour cream and fig bars.

She’s drinking roughly 12oz of milk a day now. Also lots of water. We introduced juice this month as well for the first time. I usually take apple or apple/grape 100% juice and water it down 50/50. She loves it. Just a few times a week, but i think it’s probably a nice refresher once in a while for her.

LANGUAGE
Wow, the words. Everyday there are new ones. She knows SO many! When you sneeze, she says “Bless you!”, she knows animals, foods, actions, characters (Elmo, Pooh and Mickey Mouse, pronounced “mee-mouse”) and more. She’s also started stringing her words together to make mini-sentences like “Mommy, apple, go!”, “Bunny night-night” and “Go outside”. With this new language development, I also noticed a little bit of individual word regression. I think she’s trying so hard to string them together that sometimes words she used to know now come out jumbled, but I’m not worried, maybe that’s how it works? It’s pretty amazing to witness though.

TOYS
Her favorite toys now are:
-Books (especially this Mickey Mouse set from Erika!, this “Look and Find” series, and these books!)
-Trains
-Play Kitchen and all the pieces
-Stuffed Animals
-Her new Vtech flashlight

I can’t believe we’re already into 2014 which will bring us into her THIRD year of life. Doesn’t seem possible!

Scenes from Christmas Vacation December 29, 2013

Psst! I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m terrified to be entering the Toddler-Era now! I am feeling a little lost and a lot afraid. Read more about my thoughts over at What to Expect today! And send me ‘good luck’ vibes and words of advice in the comments below!

We’re having a blast relaxing at Grammie and Grandpa’s house this week. Adele is enjoying all of the attention from everyone, and I’m relishing the fact that I haven’t had to change a diaper or wash a sippy cup since I’ve been here! Score! I’ve been going to bed early, reading magazines, watching movies and seeing friends. The perfect Christmas vacation indeed.

Adele’s been busy playing Play-Dough, creating MarbleWorks masterpieces and reading lots and lots of books. She’s in heaven.

I’m so glad both Irving’s mom and my mom saved some of the toys we played with when we were little. I have a post coming about that soon. But Adele is having so much fun playing with primary colored, non-musical toys. (With a little Cabbage Patch doll and Matchbox car action mixed in there as well for good measure!)
