Half-Marathon Training Begins (again)! July 26, 2010

I’ve now been training for endurance events for over six years! I still consider myself “new” to the sport of marathon (and half-marathon) running, even though I have 8 half-marathons and 3 full marathons under my belt!

But I’m still a rookie and I need a training plan to prepare for my events in the fall. Here is my long run schedule I will be following more or less until the winter.

 Capture

It follows similar plans to those I’ve had in the past. As much as I love marathons… it’s so nice to not see any 15-mile or 18-mile days on there. 🙂

I got off on the right foot today (literally)! Irving and I walked 2 miles before work this morning and then I did a 3 mile hike after work.

LA has been having some unseasonably cool weather lately and it’s perfect for hiking!

So I did a total of 5 miles, and it felt great!

I know it’s every parents nightmare to find out their child is attending circus school. haha But that’s exactly what Erika and I did yesterday!

Flying from a trapeze was on my “things to do before I die” list, so I was WAY excited to try this out!

We took a class at Cirque School LA called Aerial Fitness.

It was down an alleyway in Thai Town in Hollywood, at first we thought we were in the wrong place!IMG_5146

But inside, it was really cool!! We did fun things like hang from trapezes!

Erika did way better than I did.

She was doing this crazy thing and then letting go!

And when it was my turn. I just laughed at the teacher. haha I was a teensy bit too scared for that trick. 😉

But I really liked the high trapeze. This one we got to swing from!

In the end, we were sore and sweaty in such a good way. It was SO much fun. I really want to go back and try those trapeze tricks again. I bet with a little more confidence and practice I can do them!

PS… I woke up today TOTALLY sore. My abs, arms, back and shoulders! Such a great workout!

Today was just the perfect mix of friends, exercise and fun!

It started out with a 5 mile run with Erika and Timmy and the Los Angeles Racers. It was awesome. Started out cloudy and got bright and sunny by the end. What a great way to start the day!

We completed the 5 miles in 1:07 (burning 465 calories!)

Mile 1: 12:29
Mile 2: 12:18
Mile 3: 13:42
Mile 4: 15:03
Mile 5: 13:26

After the run, I came home and caught up on the three episodes of Kendra on my TIVO. Classy.

Then headed out to TWO HOURS of Pilates at Mind2Body! They were having an open house, so Erica, Janet and I headed over for some free classes.

I ended up doing 4 back-to-back 30-minute classes: Mat, Magic Circle, Tower and Reformer.

I had never done any kind of Pilates classes before, so this was a great intro into each aspect of it. I left feeling like my muscles were exhausted, but not in pain, it was so much fun. Totally relaxing. I focused a lot on breathing and I know I zoned out a couple of times. I totally needed this!

Then I met my friend, Danielle, for some iced coffee at Aroma Cafe.

We spent an hour or so just chatting and laughing and catching up. It was a lot of fun.

Irving and I had a simple dinner together.

Just some Trader Joes stuffed foccacia, veggies and a salad.

…and watched three episodes of Weeds

…while munching on Chocolate-Banana popcorn!

The night ended with a competitive “best out of three” game of YAHTZEE!

The Power Pyramid May 7, 2010

Today, I had some pretty greasy fries with my lunch. Someone actually walked by and asked if I went to McDonalds because you could smell the oil in the air. While they tasted good at the time, I swear, I had grease coming out my pores by the end of the day. Ew, right?

So after work, all I wanted to do was sweat. I headed out for a run… but it turned out to be a 2 mile walk. But when I got back, I dusted off my weights and did one of my favorite moves that my trainer taught me last year.

1

I call it The Power Pyramid!

Step 1: Stand up tall with your weights on either side of you on the floor
2

Step 2: Jump down and do a push up
3

4

Step 3: Grab your weights and stand up and do a bicep curl
5

Step 4: Bring the weights up and do a shoulder press
6

Step 5: Continue the shoulder press all the way up
7

Step 6: Go back down and repeat
 9

So they call it a Pyramid because each time you do steps 1 thru 6, you’re doing a different number of reps:

  • 1 pushup, 1 bicep curl, 1 shoulder press
  • 2 pushups, 2 bicep curls, 2 shoulder presses
  • 3 pushups, 3 bicep curls, 3 shoulder presses
  • 4 pushups, 4 bicep curls, 4 shoulder presses
  • 5 pushups, 5 bicep curls, 5 shoulder presses
  • 6 pushups, 6 bicep curls, 6 shoulder presses
  • 7 pushups, 7 bicep curls, 7 shoulder presses <—–The Top of the Pyramid!
  • 6 pushups, 6 bicep curls, 6 shoulder presses
  • 5 pushups, 5 bicep curls, 5 shoulder presses
  • 4 pushups, 4 bicep curls, 4 shoulder presses
  • 3 pushups, 3 bicep curls, 3 shoulder presses
  • 2 pushups, 2 bicep curls, 2 shoulder presses
  • 1 pushup, 1 bicep curl, 1 shoulder press

I really should start doing this every day to tone up a little bit. Plus, it’s fun to make karate moves using your camera’s self timer. Yes?
