Saturday night, Irving and I ventured downtown for a pretty unique event:

It was a Leslie Nielsen Tribute night at the Downtown Independent.
They were playing ‘The Naked Gun’ and ‘Airplane’ back to back.

Sounded fun, so we made a night of it.

We’re probably in the minority, but we love public transportation. We took the metro downtown and had fun taking pictures while we were at it.

We are so fortunate to have so many gorgeous buildings in our city. I highly recommend people go visit at night and observe them like tourists.

We always travel to the other side of the world and snap pictures of the sights, but how often do we do it right in our own backyard?

If you’ve never been to the Downtown Independent, you really should check it out. They have fun events all year long.
IMG_2859

It’s become one of our favorite best kept secrets in LA.
Hi, Irving!
IMG_2860

They even have love seats in the theater where two people can sit next to each other and cozy up. Romantic, no?
IMG_2868

Sorry for the dark photo. I was too embarrassed to put the flash on.

The double feature was also a ‘Drink A-Long’ and the first beer was on the house!
IMG_2867

They make it fun with clues during the movie where you’re supposed to ‘drink’.

-Everytime they say Roger in ‘Airplane’
-Everytime someone says But that’s not important right now in Airplane
-Everytime OJ Simpson is on screen in ‘Naked Gun’

And a bunch of others I can’t remember at the moment.

We’re going to make it a point to visit Downtown more often because there really are some great underground scenes happening there now. Lots of film, comedy and theater to check out.

A Chilly Balboa Park Run! January 9, 2011

This morning I joined the Los Angeles Racers at Balboa Park for a jog. I wanted to do 5 miles, but I’m just a wee bit out of shape and ended up only doing three today.

I had a fun running buddy though!

Muggles came along to keep me company!

I think he had a good time!

I’m running the Phoenix Rock N’ Roll Half-Marathon next Sunday, and I have to say I’m a little bit nervous. I haven’t had a serious training run since the fall. I’m a good role model for how not to train for an event. But hopefully it’ll all work out. I’ll just do a fair share of walking.

I tested out my new Zensah compression sleeves this morning though.

They were awesome. They kept me warm and I could feel my muscles being supported more. Excited to wear them on Sunday!

I hope I see SkinnyRunner and CarrotsNCake there! Anyone else going?

The Grilled Cheese Truck!!

For those of you who don’t live in Los Angeles, there’s a phenomenon that started a few years ago called ‘Food Trucks’. It’s a bunch of trucks who drive around and have awesome menus. They don’t have a solid location, so you have to check twitter to find out where they’ll be next. I’ve been DYING to try the ‘Grilled Cheese Truck’, but it always seems to evade me! (And the lines are usually really long!)

But yesterday, we were in the right place at the right time and we were right nearby where the truck was parked. The Mini Cooper dealership was having an event and the grilled cheese was FREE! (Are you kidding me? Free Grilled cheese?!)

While we waited in line, look who we spotted!
IMG_2838

Yea Baby! Groooovy!
IMG_2839

We were debating what to order… but it was an easy decision since they’re famous for their ‘Mac & Cheese Grilled Cheese’.

Think about that for a second… Mac & Cheese inside of a grilled cheese sandwich.

mac

Sounds a little strange, but trust me on this one.

Irving got the same thing, but with the Rib Meat inside.

It also came with a cup of Tomato Soup (which was surprisingly awesome)!

Thank you Mini Dealer for the free, yummy lunch!!

When we got back home, we topped off lunch with some Sea Salt Caramels.
IMG_2845

OH MY GOSH! They were AMAZING! Sweet and salty in the same bite. Delicious!

Grilled Cheese + Chocolate = HAPPY WEEKEND!

New Year, New Possibilities! January 6, 2011

The week after Christmas is always bitter sweet. We were coming off a high of friends, family, food and festivities. Lots of late nights laughing with my sisters, traveling coast to coast, presents to give and receive. It’s a hard month to top.

IMG_2827

But I also enjoy the transition into the new year. It’s a chance to start fresh, make resolutions and clean up a bit. All the ornaments get wrapped back up til next season. It’s sad to put them away, but also exciting to look forward to the other great things up ahead.
IMG_2828

I’m not sure what I’m looking forward to most this year. It’s only the middle of January, but I’m already excited for the fun things we have planned for the summer and fall. We’ve got about four or five trips already planned and that definitely makes me happy.

Tonight, Irving and I went for a long walk after dinner. Hand in hand we discussed how lucky we are to have each other to share our life adventures with. We were bouncing ideas off each other. Where will the next big trip be? We have lots to think about, but we’re leaning towards Eastern Europe. Contiki has a great tour that goes to Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Slovakia and Poland. Sign me up! We’re still in the discussion phase now, but I was practically skipping down the street just thinking about it tonight.

In other news, I made a killer Beef Stew tonight. It was my first time using my crock pot, and it was a learning experience.

IMG_2836

Lesson #1: Not all crockpots are the same size! I used this old crockpot cookbook, and I started chopping away… until I realized that it wasn’t all going to fit!
IMG_2832

I guess mine is smaller than a traditional size?  So I will be making Beef Stew #2 on Sunday to use up the meat and extra veggies!

Live and learn. It came out fantastic though. We served it with a hunk of french bread. Life doesn’t get any better than that.

Hopefully 2011 brings me a year full of new and easy recipes. Got any good crockpot ones?

Sweet-Harts! January 5, 2011

Filed under: Food — Kelocity @ 2:06 pm

I’m a sucker for homemade baked goods. Today, I visited the store Sweet Harts, which is owned by Melissa Joan Hart. It’s a cute retro candy store that has cupcakes, candy and fro-yo.

I walked out with a German Chocolate Chip cookie sandwich (Oh, yes I did!)
