I was a little nervous for my planned 7 miler today. It will be my first long run since the begining of December. But I knew I had to conquer it to get back on schedule for Boston. My group was meeting at the Becah today, and it was the PERFECT day for a run. I got there early and enjoyed the scenery for a while before everyone got there.

Don’t you love my camera timer? I put it on the hood of my car to capture this. haha

I really tried to stretch out my calves and my hamstrings so my shins wouldn’t hurt during the run. I now believe fully that tight calves were the reason for my shin splints. Lesson learned.

Stretch, stretch, stretch!…. oh and enjoy the scenery while you do it!

I did the whole 7 miles at 5:1 intervals to ease back into it, and it was PERFECT. I was able to maintain it and everything felt awesome. She’s back in the game!

My splits:
Mile 1 –  10:31
Mile 2 – 11:05
Mile 3 – 11:53
Mile 4 – 13:16 (Included a stretch break!)
Mile 5 – 11:58
Mile 6 – 12:43
Mile 7 – 19:05 (A cool down mile)

And what’s the second most important thing to running besides stretching?? ICING! And what better way to do this than nature’s ice bath! The Ocean!

After we finished, we plunged into the ocean to cool down our muscles! It felt gooooood!

(If you look quick, doesn’t that  look like snow? But it’s really the waves behind me!)

The girls who braved the cold in the name of muscle recovery!

I just love Los Angeles! You can’t beat this on a Sunday morning!

My shins are thanking me for this:

Team Spirit for the Los Angeles Racers!

Natalia got down in the sand! That’s dedication!

Afterwards, we found had to rinse all the sand off!

What a great run!

A New Game Plan! January 8, 2010

So after coming off of an injury that prevented me from running for 3+ weeks, I had to reassess my training schedule to still be able to safely reach 26.2 miles by April 19th! I feel much better after looking at this because I think it’s still do-able. I lost some recovery runs in between my really long runs, but as long as I diligently keep up with the stretching, icing and strength training, I should be ok.

Here’s what my plan is looking like now:

I decided to do the LA Marathon as a “training” run for Boston. I’m going to push myself at Marathon Pace for 20 of those miles, and then walk the last 6.2. It’s going to be hard to not want to run it for time, but since it’s 4 weeks from Boston, I cant risk an injury. If I have to do a 20 mile training run, you might as well get a medal for it, right?

My Life in an Airport…. January 4, 2010

Once again I’m stuck in an airport, but I sure do love free WIFI!

So I was supposed to leave out of Manchester today, but then I saw this… guess which flight was mine?

Yep…. Cancelled. But I called and rebooked out of Boston, which actually ends up getting me into Los Angeles EARLIER than my other one would have. Kelley: 1, Continental: 0.

I’m really looking forward to some West Coast warm weather….and seeing my husband! See ya later snowy New England!

Candlepin Bowling! January 3, 2010

Whenever I go back home, it’s fun to do and see things that we used to do when we were kids. Always on the list: candlepin bowling. Haha they don’t have that on the west coast, and I personally think it’s more fun because the rules are different and the bowling balls are easier to hold. Irving’s mom was visiting and had never been, so we got a group together and made a night of it. It was ghetto-fabulous!
