What did you guys think of the Oscars? I was entertained… but a bit confused at times. I think Melissa Leo was drunk… very strange speech. And Anne Hathaway’s dresses were just… BAD! Who’s with me?
IMG_3897

I watched the Oscars with my friend Erica and it was awesome. She’s got lots of film knowledge and she fills me in on the important info. She is also an amazing cook, and she whipped up such a great (Oscar-worthy) meal! Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Lemon Chicken and a Red Quinoa salad with raisins, cinnamon and pears. It was delicious. I contributed the colored cauliflower. I love colorful meals like this!
IMG_3895

I only saw two of the nominated “Best Picture” films (Social Network and King’s Speech), so I guessed on most of the categories. I got 11 out of 24 right though!
IMG_3896

For dessert, I made a new recipe. I hooked the laptop up to the tv in the kitchen to search for good dessert ideas. **
IMG_3893

I found these Peanut Butter Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, that ended up being pretty good.
IMG_3894

Served along side some Jelly Belly Beans (I have a million of them, remember?)
IMG_3898

The show was good, the food was great, and the company was unrivaled. Thanks for a great night, Erica!

**Remember when Irving stole moved our TV off our bedroom wall to put it in the kitchen? Well we finally got a new one that should be installed tomorrow. Can’t wait to watch Netflix in bed again!

Snow in Los Angeles! February 26, 2011

Today was such a strange day for weather in Los Angeles. This morning was bright and sunny, so we went for a morning walk to pick up some Croissants and get some fresh air. Not even two hours after we got back, it started POURING out!
IMG_3849

Not a huge deal, because after all, it DOES rain in LA…. but this wasn’t just rain… it was HAIL!
IMG_3850

We could actually hear it hitting the windows, it sounded like little pebbles hitting the glass. We both spent the day doing little things around the house and getting things checked off our never-shrinking to-do lists.
IMG_3857

Irving took an inventory of our pantry and freezer, since we never know what we have in there. Now we can just glance at it and create meals around it. Very thoughtful and extremely helpful! Hopefully we can keep it updated as we eat items and buy new things.
IMG_3858

Armed with a grocery list and a stack of coupons, I headed out (in the rain) to Trader Joes and Ralphs. It was raining, but the sun was shining.
0226011606

We did a little ‘divide and conquer’ and Irving headed to Costco.  A little while later, he called me to tell me it was SNOWING in Burbank!
0226011653

Real snow was accumulating on the road!
0226011653c

When was the last time it snowed in LA? Not since I’ve lived out here. This was very exciting for us!  Real flakes!
0226011653a

I was just four miles away, and I certainly didn’t see the white stuff, it must have just been a fluke!

Anyways, we both did really well in getting food for the week that can be made into real meals. You know how I have such a complex about meal planning and grocery shopping, but I think we did pretty well.
IMG_3859

Wanna know what I got? It’s very exciting stuff (Including some Monterey Pasta since I won a coupon for a free one from Peanut Butter Fingers last fall!)
IMG_3865

Root Beer and Vanilla Ice Cream = Root Beer Floats this week!

IMG_3864

IMG_3866

IMG_3867

And um…. SEVEN boxes of cereal. I have a problem.
IMG_3872

In my defense, each one of these had a coupon (or two!) Actually, I don’t think I paid full price for a single item in this grocery trip. SWEET!
IMG_3869

I saved lots of money. What should I do with my extra fifty bucks? Something fun, I hope!
IMG_3870

Irving did well getting some things on our list too… and some things that were NOT on our list….
IMG_3862

We are now the proud owners of a Costco-sized jar of Jelly Beans. Awesome.

Raining and Lunching in LA February 25, 2011

Today, it rained in LA. I LOVE the rain. I like to hear it pattering on the windows, I like to jump in puddles, and cozy up and read a book on the couch.

But sadly, none of these things happened today and so therefore, today I hated the rain.  I had to deal with LA drivers who simply can NOT drive when it rains. It’s just water, people!!! It took me a half hour to go four miles, and another half hour to get back. It was quite annoying.

But I did enjoy a wonderful lunch with an Emerson College friend I graduated with. We also went to Europe together back in 2003! I just found out that she works close by, and so we got together to catch up a bit. We ate at Sweet Salt, which I highly recommend. Everything there is fresh, healthy and delicious.

Because of the rain, the place was packed and we had to fight for a table. We were stalking two people who were just wrapping up, hoping to steal their table. And then we realized it was Eric McCormack from Will & Grace! Thanks for the table, Eric!

A Valentine’s Day Soiree February 15, 2011

Last night, Irving and I had such a Romantic evening. We headed up to Simi Valley to attend the ‘Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dinner and Dance’. It was such a great night, we ate, danced, laughed and talked. It was perfect.
 IMG_3573

Backing up a little bit, the event started at 6pm, which isn’t easy coming from the Hollywood area. We got dressed in 15 minutes flat!

BEFORE:
IMG_3537

AFTER:
IMG_3548

But we made it just in time. The Reagan Library is really a sight to see if you are in the area. The American History comes alive through their amazing exhibits. They just redid them all for Reagan’s 100th Birthday celebration.
IMG_3550

We had such a great time wandering through the museum on our way to dinner. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce to you the next President of the United States!
IMG_3559

And his first lady, Kelley!
IMG_3561

We’re naturals. And the first task on the job is to make a television broadcast to our country.
IMG_3551

You’re live in 3…2…1!
IMG_3553

IMG_3556

Then we arrived at the highlight of the evening. Seeing Air Force One.
IMG_3565

So much history was made on this aircraft. They call it “The Flying White House”. The Reagan Library website says: This Flying White House, tail number 27000, served seven U.S Presidents from 1973 to 2001, including Presidents Nixon, Carter, Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and George W. Bush.
IMG_3616

We literally dined underneath Air Force One!
IMG_3569

To our right, we could see Marine One too (The Presidential Helicopter!)
IMG_3572

We must have been the youngest couple there by almost twenty years, and we LOVED it. It was so nice to look around and see all these older couples still dancing, still happy, and still in love. I can’t wait to grow old with Irving and share these fun evenings with him. I just hope I can dance as well as them in sixty years!
IMG_3567

We were seated at our own sweetheart table overlooking the dance floor. It was so cozy and we had fun chatting.
IMG_3579

My handsome Valentine!
IMG_3578

But ok… the food. Oh My Gosh, The food! It was amazing. We started with some champagne.
IMG_3582

Cheers! To many more!
IMG_3584

Fresh Rosemary Bread
IMG_3581

The Salad: EPICUREAN GREENS with cheese, candied pistachios, sliced oranges and a raspberry balsamic vinaigrette
IMG_3574

I had the vegetarian dish this time: VEGETABLE RISOTTO with parmesan and asparagus spears

IMG_3585

And Irving had the Chicken: ROASTED ROSEMARY CHICKEN in a marsala wine sauce with Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus Spears and Carrot Souffles
IMG_3586

And for dessert: FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE with dark chocolate ganache, white chocolate mousse, fresh berries and raspberry coulis
IMG_3587

OHMYGOSH I’ve never had chocolate cake as good as this. NEVER. This was to DIE for. And the saddest part? We couldn’t even finish it. That photo above was per person! We each had our own. I tried to finish it, I really did. But I was far too stuffed. I eventually surrendered and watched the waiter carry it away with a tear in my eye. I will dream about this cake for as long as I live. Seriously.

After dinner, we headed down towards the dance floor.
IMG_3592

There were so many incredible dancers that we were a little intimidated. These guys know the waltz, the fox trot, the samba, you name it, they danced it!
IMG_3596

We found our place in a corner where our two left feet wouldn’t get in anyone’s way. It was fun though. We practiced a few of our wedding dance spins and had a blast.
IMG_3604

IMG_3607

To dance underneath one of the most iconic symbols of America was a little surreal.
IMG_3598

Down below, there is a bar that was gifted to the Library from Ireland. It’s a pub that Reagan visited when he was over there. They were going to tear it down, but instead, donated it. So neat!
IMG_3591

It was truly an event we will never forget. We feel so lucky that we have this stuff at our fingertips.
IMG_3599

At the end of the night, we got to take home the flowers from the tables! They were really cute.
IMG_3575

IMG_3612

Happy Valentine’s Day, Irving!

IMG_3618

And just for fun, here’s a flashback picture of us in this same place back in 2006!

The Eastern Sierras Tour! February 13, 2011

Yesterday afternoon, after blogging, I went for a walk around Mammoth Village. There isn’t too much there, but it’s really cute. I love ski villages.
IMG_3469

Then I took the bus up to the base lodge to see Irving for the last few runs of the day. What a PERFECT day for skiing. I was a little jealous when I heard the mountain wasn’t crowded too.
IMG_3471

Irving is easy to spot with his big yellow jacket. here he comes!
IMG_3472

IMG_3473

Hi!
IMG_3474

The mountain closes at 4pm and they had free hot chocolate for everyone at the bottom of the lifts. Even though I didn’t ski, I certainly enjoyed it! Then all 13 of us headed back down to the condo. We promptly put a couple of beers in the snow. YUM!
IMG_3478

IMG_3480

We went out to dinner in town and came back and went to bed. We were asleep by 8:30pm. HAHA

~~~~~~
This morning, we checked out and found a great slope for sledding!
IMG_3484
I was talking to someone and I turned back around, and there was irving at the top of the mountain already sitting on his sled.
IMG_3481
IMG_3482
IMG_3483
IMG_3496
It was a wee bit icy for me, so I was the dedicated ‘Kid Stopper’. I was in charge of making sure none of the six kids went over the edge and into the street. Very important task.
IMG_3487
IMG_3486
We thought this cloud looked like a heart! Perfect for a Valentine’s day weekend!
IMG_3485
Awe! Happy Valentine’s Day, Irving!
IMG_3498
After we tuckered out the kids adults, we started our trip back towards Los Angeles. The drive was gorgeous.
IMG_3514
IMG_3515
An hour later, we found ourselves at ‘Erick Schat’s Bakery’ in Bishop. IMG_3520
Apparently it’s this really famous bakery that has a very good reputation. The lines were crazy long and the place was packed!
IMG_3518
I was amused by all the rules they had. Everywhere you turned, there was another sign posted with another rule. One of them was ‘no photos inside’, so you’ll just have to trust me that this place is worth stopping at. We tried the cheese rolls. And then I went back in for some coconut gelato.
IMG_3521 IMG_3522
An hour later, our caravan of cars stopped at Manzanar. This was a War Relocation camp during World War II.
IMG_3525
After Pearl Harbor, the government felt that Japanese Americans were a threat to our country and rounded them up and put them in these concentration camps around the county. Most of them were American citizens, but they didn’t care. It boiled down to racism. A very somber place in our history.
IMG_3526
They have reconstructed some of the barracks so visitors can get a glimpse of what life was like inside the camp.
IMG_3527
A lot of it is overgrown and torn down, but 10,000 people used to live in here.
IMG_3528
They have an auto route where you can drive the perimeter of the camp. At the back is a cemetary where a few people are still buried.
IMG_3529
I have been to Dachau in Germany, and later this year, we will be visiting Auschwitz in Poland. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, imprisonment of innocent humans based on prejudice is just wrong. We felt very grateful to have seen Manzanar and hear some of the stories of the people.
Then we drove another couple of hours and came across the Airplane Graveyard in the Mojave Desert. Apparently it’s a place where planes go to die. Decommissioned aircrafts are brought here where they taken apart and recycled.
 IMG_3530
Two hours after that, we stopped to do a little shopping. I am going to a fancy event tomorrow night for Valentine’s Day (you’ll just have to wait and see where!) and I desperately needed a new dress. Irving graciously agreed to come along. We found a Dillards off the highway and I spent an hour trying on about 25 dresses. I finally found a great one. Besides prom and bridesmaid dresses, it’s the most expensive dress I’ve ever bought. But it looked great, and I really felt good in it, so I splurged. I’m so grown up!
And because Irving was so patient, I agreed to go to Souplantation with him. I normally don’t like that place. It’s been about five years since I had been there. But it wasn’t that bad. I just made sure not to gorge myself and not fill up on carbs. I think it worked out pretty well.
IMG_3531
And now, we have just 30 minutes left until we get home. What a great way to break up a 5 hour drive. Stopping every couple of hours worked out really well.
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
