20-Something Woman Seeks Friends in LA September 20, 2011

Hi Friends! I hope you’ve been enjoying all of my Europe posts. I wanted to take a break from those for a day or two to change the subject for a bit. (Don’t worry, I still have posts coming about Krakow, Warsaw, Salzburg and Munich, hope you’re excited!)

Let’s talk for a second about living life 3,000 miles away from home. This is a very fragile subject for me and I don’t know if I’ll ever fully be at peace with it. But I’m learning how to find a balance and thus maintain a happy status quo.

I grew up in a suburb of Boston with a large family and a pretty big circle of friends. In my house, you could expect the phone to ring once every half hour, and the doorbell to ring a few times a day. There were always people dropping in to say hi, coming over for dinner or to chat with a drink on the porch. Neighbors stop by to gossip, or to exchange desserts and someone was always watching out for you.

Cousins at Christmas!!

With a large family back in Boston, there’s always a BBQ to attend, or a cousin’s soccer game to watch. There are birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and movie nights. I left all of that behind to pursue my dreams in Los Angeles. It’s hard knowing how good you have it, and then to consciously decide to leave it all behind. Moving to LA will forever be the decision that defines me. In 50 years I will look back and tell my grandchildren about how Irving and I rented a minivan and drove off to California.

Now fast forward to life in LA. With the time change, my phone rings just a few times a week, and most phone calls have been replaced with text messages or emails. And I don’t think my doorbell has randomly rang at all this year (sometimes the FedEx guy rings my bell, but that doesn’t really count). Life is different in LA. People don’t just ‘drop by’. Visits are preempted with text messages (not that I don’t appreciate these, it’s just not the same).

Neighbors don’t look out for you here by default. I don’t even know who most of my neighbors are. I see people hit the ‘elevator close’ button often so they can avoid the chit-chat. It’s easy to feel lonely in LA.

Everyone says that it gets easier to make friends when you have kids. I suppose that is true, but what can the rest of us do in the meantime? I have a running group, a scrapbook group, an LA Bloggers group and a handful of local high school and college friends (all of whom I am eternally grateful for). Maybe all adults feel this way no matter where they live. Maybe it’s just what happens when everyone is in their 20s and people get busy with their own lives.

Halloween Horror Nights Last Year!

It doesn’t help that Irving and I are both characteristically introverts. We love our quiet time at home, and we love to travel together. But sometimes all I want is to enjoy a mug of hot tea with some girl friends and talk about books, movies and life. (Anyone free this weekend?) I feel like I haven’t put my roots down yet. I am digging though, I’m sure they will sprout soon.

Any suggestions on making friends in a new city? Tell me I’m not alone here!

Sweet Butter and the Palm August 24, 2011

I ate out a lot this week for some reason. 99% of the time, I bring my lunch to work, but lately I guess I’ve been lazy. But the food and the company has been great, so I can’t complain.

Today I ate at Sweet Butter in Sherman Oaks for the first time. It was a little pricey, but definitely worth it. The atmosphere is fun and the food is incredible. We had a nice leisurely lunch outside today. Even though it hit 104* in the valley today, it sure didn’t feel like it under their awning with an arnold palmer in hand.

I got an artisan grilled cheese that was to DIE for. I consider myself a grilled cheese connoisseur and I have to say this was hands down one of the best I’ve EVER had. It had a high quality cheese with heirloom tomatoes inside. Delicious. The shoestring fries were kind of meh, but I ate them anyways. I’ll eat anything with ketchup.  I am already scheming up a trip back just for more of that grilled cheese.

I haven’t seen much of Irving this week. We’ve been working opposite schedules and he’s often going to bed when I get home and he’s gone by the time I wake up. In order to catch up on life, we took a trek downtown for a change of scenery. In the car ride there we had a “brain dump” where we just chatted about miscellaneous things that happened during the week. We are both independent people, but after a few days, we really crave each other’s undivided attention and need to reconnect.

We really do make a great team. Case in point this week… Irving started a load of laundry. I came home and threw it in the dryer. He came home and folded it. We never communicated once about it, but we’re like a well oiled machine and make such a great team. Love you babe!

Dinner tonight was at the Palm Restaurant, courtesy of American Express (who sent us a gift card for some reason! Score!)

The food was great, but I just don’t understand fancy restaurants. The décor was nice, the food was great…. but it just didn’t feel special for what you get for your money. I don’t know, guess I’m just one of those girls who isn’t impressed by fancy menus and white linen table cloths. I felt so out of my element.

It was a great evening though. Nice to get out together and enjoy downtown LA.

Do you like fancy restaurants?  It’s fun to get dressed up and catered to, but I’m definitely more at home with Olive Garden. At least they give you chocolates when they hand you the bill. That’s always a winner in my book.

Dudamel and Lang Lang At the Bowl July 14, 2011

We haven’t really have a ton of plans recently, but I’ve been keeping busy with scrapbooking, digitizing some home video tapes and of course, reading THE TWILIGHT BOOKS!! (I’m in the middle of Breaking Dawn and I am LOVING it!

We actually almost forgot that we had Hollywood Bowl tickets for Tuesday night. It was just the two of us this time, and we were happy to be outside, hear some good music and get out of the house for a few hours. It was a cool and breezy night, perfect for wearing a hoodie (my favorite!)

IMG_6303

We kept it real simple for dinner. Instead of our usual picnic, we opted to just bring a small pizza in. Easy peasy.
IMG_6309IMG_6305

Before the show started, we were just talking about how lucky we are to live in LA. We absolutely LOVE it out here. Sometimes I take it for granted that we have all these amazing places to see right at our fingertips. From our seats, we could see the Hollywood Sign, the Ford Theater and the Griffith Park Observatory! What you don’t see in this picture is the Greek Theater, Hollywood and Highland, The Walk of Fame and SO many others within a half mile from there.

I sometimes can’t believe this is my town.IMG_6313

Soon the show began. Dudamel is such a talented young conductor. He gets really into the music and you can tell he’s passionate about what he does.

IMG_6318

I don’t know much about classical music, but I did recognize a few of the songs they played. It’s such an amazing orchestra.
IMG_6316

And then Lang Lang came out and played his piano along with the band. He is incredibly gifted. He doesn’t even look at the keys when he plays. It’s amazing that only ten fingers are making such beautiful music. It sounds like there would be three people playing at once!  IMG_6320

I really enjoyed the music, but I have to admit, I was so excited to read my book while I listened. I bought Breaking Dawn on the Nook software and was happy to read for an hour. Yea, it was probably rude, but we were in the cheap seats and we were the ONLY people in our section. Don’t judge.IMG_6322

In other news, I am in love with the flowers Irving bought me for our anniversary this week! I love buttom mums. I had them in my wedding bouquet. So summery!anni (9)

And I bought us two cupcakes to share. They were good, but not as good as our wedding ones. Le sigh.anni (7)

Royal High Tea July 9, 2011

In honor of Prince William and Princess Kate’s royal trip to Hollywood, my friend Janet and I decided that having afternoon tea would be the perfect way to celebrate.
Tea House (2)

Ok, so that’s not entirely true. We bought a groupon a few weeks back and scheduled our Tea Date long before we realized the Royals would be in town. But it seems appropriate, don’t you think?
Our destination was “Two A Tea”, a cute little tea house about an hour away. And we agreed it was definitely worth the drive.
Tea House (1)

The tea house is set up like an old Victorian home. Complete with crystal chandeliers, baroque art and antique linens. It was so fun to dress up, act proper (as proper as snapping photos of your meal can be) and enjoy some dainty foods.
Tea House (14)

They have various menus to choose from, each varying in the amount of courses you can enjoy with your tea. We chose the “Royal High Tea”. It was my first visit to a tea house, so might as well go all out, right?
Tea House (5)

The tea list is pretty big, and it’s hard to decide on a flavor. We each got our own pot, so in the end, decided on Vanilla Coconut and Peach Apricot. While the tea brewed, we started up a great conversation. It’s fun to catch up with friends without distractions. I really needed an afternoon of girl talk.
Tea House (4)

Before long, our tea pots were ready. Freshly brewed tea is so delicious. And even on a hot California day, it hit the spot. It was so fun to drink out of beautiful teacups too. It felt fancy schmancy.
Tea House (7)

Our first course was a freshly baked blueberry scone. It was the perfect mix of crumble and sweetness. Served with lemon curd, clotted cream and berry preserves. I admit I was scared to try the clotted cream, but it was really good.
Tea House (8)

Next up was the soup course. I got the pureed red pepper with feta cheese and croutons.
Tea House (11)

And Janet ordered the carrot ginger that also came with croutons.
Tea House (12)

Next up was a citrus salad. This was so perfect for a summer day. The dressing was sweet and refreshing!
Tea House (13)

Meanwhile, we were sip sipping our tea the whole time. Cup after cup.
Tea House (10)

Soon a scoop of sorbet came out to cleanse our palettes. I thought it was adorable that they served this on a tea bag rest.
Tea House (16)

Then we were ready for our tea sandwiches!  We had a turkey, cream cheese & cranberry sauce, egg salad, roasted vegetable, curried chicken and cucumber. I had one of each (minus the egg salad). My favorite one was the cucumber, although I was too full to finish it.
Tea House (17)

And finally, we had dessert. We decided to each get one and split it half and half. One was a warm berry cobbler with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce and the other was a black forest chocolate cake with a chocolate mouse with raspberry drizzle and fresh whipped cream.

Oh my, they were amazing. Sadly, all my camera wanted to focus on was the whipped cream, but you’ll have to trust me that it was beautiful and yummy.
Tea House (18)

I think we sat and chatted for almost three hours! The waitress refilled our teapots once, so I’m pretty sure I drank almost two pots of tea in all.
Tea House (19)

What a great afternoon, hope to do it again someday. Thanks for the great company, Janet!

Happy Fourth! July 4, 2011

We really didn’t do anything to celebrate the 4th today. Part of me kind of wished we had elaborate plans to kayak somewhere, or bbq with friends, or cozied up to watch fireworks on a summery patch of grass near a river…. but this year, we were content relaxing and enjoying the day uneventfully at home.
IMG_6301

A few weeks ago, I bought us matching patriotic shirts and I told asked Irving if we could be twinsies!
IMG_6299

I slept til almost 9 this morning, and spent the rest of the day reading Eclipse (Yep, I finished New Moon at 1:30am on Saturday night!) This time, I downloaded it as an ebook to the kindle app on my phone. I wasn’t sure if it would be too small or too annoying on such a small screen, but I’m totally engrossed with it and it’s working out great!

Other than a quick excursion to Best Buy and Trader Joes, we didn’t leave the house. Irving played his new FIFA World Cup xbox game and I did a bit of scrapbooking and more reading.

Once it got dark, I went up to our roof to watch some fireworks. One of the perks of living in “the valley” is being able to see so many fireworks displays close by. I had SIX shows to watch all the way around! But the best ones were the illegal ones being blasted off in a parking lot right behind my building. I’m pretty sure that’s illegal and probably dangerous though!

Even though we love to travel the world, I know that we are both happy and proud to call America our home.

Happy Independence Day!

Did any of you watch fireworks from a grassy knoll or BBQ on the beach?
