Baby’s First Rock Concert May 5, 2012

I’ve been dying to see Coldplay live for SO long! They are one of my favorite bands and I didn’t want to miss them this time around! Tickets went on sale months ago and I pretty much just told Irving we were going no matter what. He reminded me that I’d be almost 9 months pregnant, but we decided to go for it anyways. Baby loves good music.

The show was at the Hollywood Bowl and for some reason we got there 2.5 hours before the show started. I should know better that shows never start at the time on the ticket. We clearly don’t go to enough concerts.

Everyone in the audience was given one of these funky 80s bracelets and were so excited to see what they were for.

Turns out they were actually part of the show. They all lit up different colors to the beat of the music they were playing. It was so cool to see thousands of them blinking in rhythm at the same time.

Here’s a video I found on Youtube:

We loved the show, they had tons of energy and the lasers, lights and wristbands were really fun.

But we were surprised that all those wristbands went to waste after. They didn’t recycle them or have collection bins. Kind of a bummer.Coldplay at Hollywood Bowl (5)

I think the baby liked the show, I could feel him/her dancing around in there.

Now we’re more excited than ever to play this CD over and over when the baby gets here! YES!

Training with Music September 23, 2011

Um. I looked at the calendar today and realized that I have just 23 DAYS til I run walk my next half marathon!

That’s like THREE WEEKS away! Oops. Guess I’m going to have to rely on all the walking I did in Europe for my training (I had multiple 13-17 mile days in there, so trust me that it counts as something!)

Even though I’ve let running fall to the wayside this year, I’m still getting out and walking multiple times a week. Irving has gotten back into a workout habit and we’re using our evening walks to catch up, get some fresh air and stretch our legs a bit. We’re both 100% committed to a healthy marriage and I’m glad I keep half marathons sprinkled throughout my calendar to keep me focused.

The other thing that motivates me to get outside and exercise is some good music. For years I used to run without an ipod, I used to like just listening to my feet hit the pavement and zoning out. But now I need something in my ears to keep me going.

I didn’t get compensated at all for writing this, but it was interesting so I thought I’d share. I got an email yesterday from someone who runs the website RunHundred.com.  The site has lists of songs that are perfect for working out and they are categorized by “beats per minute”.  Then you can decide how fast or slow you want your music to be for whatever workout you have planned and download accordingly. They also have an app that you can add to your smartphone and it will sort the music you already have by BPM.

I always thought Green Day was great for running because all of their songs seem to match my cadence and I can run to the beat. But this site has a bunch that I am definitely going to bookmark for future use. They also have mixes and suggested playlists for the gym too.

And in case you are interested, here’s a list of the top 10 workout songs this week, according to votes placed at RunHundred.com:

Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer – Give Me Everything (Sidney Samson Remix) – 129 BPM

Nicki Minaj – Super Bass – 128 BPM

Switchfoot – Dark Horses – 83 BPM

Gym Class Heroes & Adam Levine – Stereo Hearts – 90 BPM

Lady GaGa – Edge Of Glory (Bare Noize Remix) – 140 BPM

Pitbull & Marc Anthony – Rain Over Me – 128 BPM

Nadia Ali, Alex Kenji & Starkillers – Pressure (Alesso Radio Edit) – 129 BPM

T.I. & B.o.B. – We Don’t Get Down Like Y’all – 92 BPM

LMFAO, GoonRock & Lauren Bennett – Party Rock Anthem (Russ Chimes Remix) – 129 BPM

Alexandra Stan – Mr. Saxobeat – 129 BPM

To find more workout songs-and hear next month’s contenders—folks can check out the free database at RunHundred.com. Visitors can browse the song selections there by genre, tempo, and era-to find the music that best fits with their particular workout routine.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT SONG AT THE MOMENT?
I need some more suggestions. I’m currently listening to Green Day, Cold Play and Adele. Apparently my ipod’s  “beats per minute” has a pretty low cadence!

Singing Stars of Hollywood August 2, 2011

We had yet another night at the Hollywood Bowl this past weekend. It was the LA Philharmonic with “The Singing Stars of Television”! It was quite the all-star cast and we had a great time. But first! The food!

We usually picnic beforehand, and it’s SO much more fun with a big group of people. We had an impressive spread this time!

We had 8 people in our group (whoo hoo!) and this was the menu:
-Chicken and Beef Skewers from Zankou Chicken
-Basmati Rice from Zankou
-Buffalo Chicken Dip with chips (made by yours truly! Recipe coming tomorrow!)
-Summer Garden Salad
-Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
-Fresh Fruit
-Hummus
-Blonde Brownies
-CRUMBS CUPCAKES!
-Sparkling Lemonade

Yea. It was epic.

I’d say the Bowl was only about half full that night (which is crazy considering how amazing the show was!) We had a whole section (or two) all to ourselves!

Ok! Get Ready! Blurry pictures ahead!

First up was Michael Feinstein. He’s really talented. I was impressed at the range of his voice.
IMG_6753

Next up was Florence Henderson! Yep. THE Mrs. Brady!!! She even sang the theme song to the Brady Bunch! It was so cool!!! She’s adorable.
IMG_6758

Wayne Brady and Cheyenne Jackson also did a few numbers. Cheyenne is super cute! I guess he’s on Glee? I need to watch more TV.

But I was most excited to see Dick Van Dyk. That man is incredible! You can just tell that he’s had a career doing something that he loves. He did a bunch of songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins!!!
IMG_6766

And perhaps the best part was when he actually rapped a song with his group “The Vantastics”.

I found a video of it on Youtube that you have see. Click ahead to 2:45 in the clip.

I feel so lucky to see these amazing stars live on stage! What a fun night.

Dudamel and Lang Lang At the Bowl July 14, 2011

We haven’t really have a ton of plans recently, but I’ve been keeping busy with scrapbooking, digitizing some home video tapes and of course, reading THE TWILIGHT BOOKS!! (I’m in the middle of Breaking Dawn and I am LOVING it!

We actually almost forgot that we had Hollywood Bowl tickets for Tuesday night. It was just the two of us this time, and we were happy to be outside, hear some good music and get out of the house for a few hours. It was a cool and breezy night, perfect for wearing a hoodie (my favorite!)

IMG_6303

We kept it real simple for dinner. Instead of our usual picnic, we opted to just bring a small pizza in. Easy peasy.
IMG_6309IMG_6305

Before the show started, we were just talking about how lucky we are to live in LA. We absolutely LOVE it out here. Sometimes I take it for granted that we have all these amazing places to see right at our fingertips. From our seats, we could see the Hollywood Sign, the Ford Theater and the Griffith Park Observatory! What you don’t see in this picture is the Greek Theater, Hollywood and Highland, The Walk of Fame and SO many others within a half mile from there.

I sometimes can’t believe this is my town.IMG_6313

Soon the show began. Dudamel is such a talented young conductor. He gets really into the music and you can tell he’s passionate about what he does.

IMG_6318

I don’t know much about classical music, but I did recognize a few of the songs they played. It’s such an amazing orchestra.
IMG_6316

And then Lang Lang came out and played his piano along with the band. He is incredibly gifted. He doesn’t even look at the keys when he plays. It’s amazing that only ten fingers are making such beautiful music. It sounds like there would be three people playing at once!  IMG_6320

I really enjoyed the music, but I have to admit, I was so excited to read my book while I listened. I bought Breaking Dawn on the Nook software and was happy to read for an hour. Yea, it was probably rude, but we were in the cheap seats and we were the ONLY people in our section. Don’t judge.IMG_6322

In other news, I am in love with the flowers Irving bought me for our anniversary this week! I love buttom mums. I had them in my wedding bouquet. So summery!anni (9)

And I bought us two cupcakes to share. They were good, but not as good as our wedding ones. Le sigh.anni (7)

Keeping the New Year Productive January 10, 2011

I’m trying to keep my motivation from the New Year going by attacking things that have been on my to-do list for years! One of my most daunting tasks is digitizing my CD collection.

My stack of discs is literally taking over my home office. Every time I back up my desk chair, I hit the leaning tower of CDs. They need to go.
IMG_2883

I’ve always had bad luck with CDs for a few reasons:

1.) I threw out all of my CDs in high school when I went through a “I don’t like music anymore” phase. (What was I thinking? They were $24 a pop back then!)

2.) I then rebought all my favorites and then some and brought them to Europe with me… and then proceeded to accidently leave them on a plane in the Frankfurt airport. True story, I cried.

3.) When I went to college, I threw out all the cases and just kept the CDs in big cases. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I can’t sell them to Amoeba.

So now, I decided that digitizing my collection is the best option. All my songs will be in one place, and I can finally clean up my little office corner. But what should I do with my CDs once I’m done? Toss em? Sell them on Ebay? Do any of my friends or readers want them? It’s mostly electronica and punk music (and lots of Blink 182).

Any Takers? Any Recommendations? I need them out of sight!
