T-Minus 2 Days til Ragnar! April 13, 2011

So Cal Ragnar starts early Friday morning (but our team is meeting tomorrow night, so really, it starts in 24 hours!) I am so excited. I’m not really sure what to expect, but I think it’s better that way. My husband is a little nervous for me because I’m the type of person who REALLY needs 9 hours of sleep per night. Don’t worry, team, I won’t be cranky!

I am packing everything up tonight and saying goodbye to my husband (and my bed) til late Saturday!

Man, I hope I have everything! Everything I bring has to fit inside one little gym bag. Each van has six runners, a driver, a navigator and a camera crew! It’ll be close quarters!

My team sounds pretty awesome. I wish I could tell you more about what our theme is! Here’s a hint….
IMG_5315

Oh, that doesn’t really help… here’s another hint… I printed something up at Kinkos…
IMG_5317

Ok, that doesn’t help either… do you really want a hint? Here it is (since I hate secrets!)

Heck yes. Chuck Norris will be on our van. Ragnar, here we come!

Follow me live during the whole two day event as we run 200 miles from LA to San Diego. I’ll be tweeting the whole time here: @Kelocity !

4 Miles. Boom! April 10, 2011

The Ragnar Relay is just five days away! I definitely don’t want to have ‘dead legs’ (which sometimes happens to me when I don’t run for a few days), so this week, I want to make sure I do a couple of miles each day. Not too much, but just enough to get the blood moving and my legs ready.

This morning I had a banana and some peanut butter and headed out the door. It was PERFECT weather, low 50s, cool breeze. Ideal for running, although it did warm up towards the end.

I had trance music pumping through my ipod (Fun Fact: I love Trance and Techno music!) and I just enjoyed the run.

While Running, I….

…ran past Warner Brothers Studios (I love living in LA!) and I saw a poster for the 40th Anniversary DVD release of A Clockwork Orange. Wow, 40 years? It’s a strange movie, but I really liked it!

…freaked out when I thought a pit bull was chasing me (it turned out to just be a white lab who wanted to play).

…realized that I really like the dresses the lady in the T-Mobile billboards is wearing.

In the end, I ran a little over four miles, but I stopped the Garmin right at 4.00 because I really like round numbers.

I really felt like I could have run another 3-4 miles, but I was happy to finish strong knowing I had more in the tank. I hope that’s the case next week during the race too!

YAY Sweat! Ew!

I was excited to try some Coconut Water today. I hear the electrolytes in it help hydrate you better than water can. And I love all things coconut, so I thought I would love it.

Turns out, not so much. It had a strange smell that I couldn’t get over. I drank half and gave the rest to Irving. So sad, I really wanted to love it.

Maybe I’d like it better if it was served out of an actual coconut with a straw. Yes. This looks much better.

Calves and Contiki! April 5, 2011

Filed under: Running — Kelocity @ 9:57 am

Wow, that hike this weekend really did me in. Yesterday, my calves just felt really tight, but today, i woke up in pain. Must be that delayed on-set muscle soreness. Ouch!

I’ll be doing a lot of this at my desk today.

As a runner, I’m used to my quads, shins and hamstrings being sore…. but sore calves are a whole new beast to me. I feel like I’m walking around with rocks stuck to my legs, is this normal? I iced for a bit this morning (while watching last night’s Secret Life!) and then foam rolled, but it was almost too painful to do! Isn’t foam rolling supposed to hurt, and then feel good? Well this just never felt good.

I plan to keep icing, stretching, moving and drinking lots of water today. I think a nice jog tonight would also be beneficial. Ragnar is 10 days away!

In other news, check out my first Guest Post on the Contiki Travel Blog! I’m so excited to be able to share my travel adventures and tips on their site. I’ll be posting weekly, if there’s any topics you want me to cover, let me know!

To Run or not to Run? April 4, 2011

Filed under: Running — Kelocity @ 11:07 am

I’ve run the “Nike Women’s Marathon” SIX times already. If I run again this year, it will be lucky #7.
Should I register?

PROS
-I’ve run it every year since 2005 (Full=1, Half=5)
-I know the course by heart
-I LOVE San Francisco (and have family there!)
-Great Swag and Expo
-Tiffany Necklace!

CONS
$130 Price Tag for the HALF marathon! Whhaaa?? That’s the same price as the Boston Marathon!
-Need flight to Bay Area
-Not sure if anyone else is running it this year.
-It’s a lottery to get in

What do you think? Should I sign up and go for more bling?

She Runs LA! March 31, 2011

I love running. I’ll never win any marathons or anything, but it doesn’t matter. I still love it. My first marathon was the Nike Women’s Marathon in 2005 when I first moved out to LA. And since then, I’ve completed 13 more full or half marathon races. I started running as a way to meet people and to do something good for myself.

Back in the day, even before I joined Team in Training, I used to run with the Nike Club Team. We’d meet a couple of times a week for 3-5 mile runs around the city. It feels like a lifetime ago, but it was fun. Nike even provided dinner for all the runners each time!

But now, Nike is taking it to the next level. On April 27-28, Nike is hosting a Virtual 10K race. But this isn’t your average 10K. This is Girls Night Out — Nike Style!
Introducing: She Runs LA Powered by Nike+!

From Nike: There’s no start line, no finish line and definitely no skinny guys in short shorts lining up in front of you before the gun goes off. It’s just you, your girlfriends and the city you love to run. And afterwards? Forget the usual free bananas and sports drinks. Nike is hosting a serious celebration, where you’ll trade your sports bra for skinny jeans and live it up with 5,000 college girls from all over the city.

Sign me up! I’ll be participating in this event for sure! (Lots of other bloggers are too!) Who’s with us?
All you have to do is Register Here and run a 10k (anywhere you want) between April 27th and April 28th. Full details on the website. Anyone who registers gets invited to a swanky LA Party (complete with a Red Carpet!) at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA on April 28th at 7pm. It will be a night of fashion, dancing and a musical guest ‘you won’t want to miss’! They’ve promised celebrity appearances too! EEEeee!
Now I need a new dress…..
If you register, let me know! I’ll be getting  up at the crack of dawn on April 28th to run my 6.2 miles. Anyone want to join me?

EDITED TO ADD: The first 50 people to respond will have their registration fee waived and will get to be a part of Nike’s first ever digital race, She Runs LA, and see Mike Posner in concert!”
