First up, the Photography Challenge! I’m having a problem finding time to take pictures during daylight hours. I might have to start taking my photos on the weekend when I have more natural light to work with. That’s photography 101, right?

DAY 4 – Something Green
I was looking all over for a green subject to take pictures of. And then I realized what the perfect item would be. My sprouting chives!! I definitely don’t have a green thumb, but I’m told chives are easy to maintain, so I’m giving it a shot. New chutes are coming up and I’m so excited!

My herbs may be a sign of spring, but it actually poured in Los Angeles today. I was so sad I couldn’t ditch work in favor of some puddle jumping. The first rain of fall is always an exciting moment here in California. I was giddy when I heard it on my window when I woke up.

And now that fall has officially decided to join us here, I’m hoping it will stick around for a while. I love fall. The rain, Halloween, sweaters and cozy weekends. It’s also football season. Sometimes I put the games on just to hear the commentators. Football reminds me of home when Sunday Football was the thing to do on the weekends. I’m from Boston. Sports are a religion.

We need a team in LA, don’t you think?

Being the official sport of America… Football = FOOD. (Tell me I’m not the only one who gets excited for Superbowl purely for the buffalo dip and nachos that go with it!) But football doesn’t have to equal calories. There are smart ways of indulging without resorting to carrot sticks and water.

Here are a few snack ideas for your next big game:

  • Craisins Original Dried Cranberries: Surprise your taste buds with the sweet, delicious taste of Craisins® Dried Cranberries. Made with real fruit and good as a snack or in a recipe, they’re naturally fat-free and cholesterol-free. Plus, they’re a good source of fiber and 1/3 cup is equal to a serving of fruit.
  • Smart for Life protein bars: Eliminates post-exercise hunger, so you gain muscle not fat. Supports healthy cardiovascular function, helps promote weight loss, boosts metabolism and controls hunger.
  • Medifast Cheese Puffs: These sweet and savory products will tempt taste buds and keeps you feeling full plus they offer a daily requirement of 24 vitamins and minerals!
  • HINT Water: Staying hydrated, refreshed and in shape is a must, which is why HINT Water is offering great flavors like Strawberry-Kiwi, Mango-Grapefruit and Pomegranate-Tangerine without adding those extra calories.

What’s your favorite Sunday Night Football dish? Tell me in the comment section of this post and I’ll randomly choose a winner to receive a Prize Pack of each of these products on October 31st.

Iris: A Party for the Eyes October 5, 2011

Irving and I love going to Cirque shows. Vegas is known for its out-of-this-world shows with dazzling costumes, incredible acts and gorgeous sets.  We’ve seen Zumanity and KA and really liked them both. It’s always the highlight of a trip to Sin City.
IMG_4423img_57321

But now we don’t have to drive four hours to Nevada to catch an amazing stage show. Hollywood now has its very own resident Cirque show. Introducing: IRIS.
Cirque-du-Soleil-Iris

We’ve been itching to see this show since we first heard about it two years ago. Unlike the shows in Vegas, IRIS didn’t have a building designed around the performance. Instead, they had to use the existing space inside the Kodak Theater and retrofit it to their needs. It was a three year process that involved a $40 million excavation project to create room for the sets they had in mind.
IMG_9891

The two hour show is comprised of human artists, mechanical props, film, light, music and sound all interacting with each other in the most magical way you can imagine. The execution is flawless and you really are transported out of reality and into a whimsical world that will catch your breath and hold it til the very end.
Aerial_Ball-001

There are 72 cast members, 200 costumes, 20 projectors and more than 300 stage cues throughout the show. There are times when you don’t know where to look because there is so much going on at once. You can look left, right, up or down and your eyes will be fascinated with what they can see.
Contorsion-026

The acts were impressive, it is truly amazing what the body is capable of. It’s the human aspect that really impresses me. There is risk, fear and adrenaline involved in all of the performances. It’s the “how do they do that” questions that mesmerizes the audience. The circus has evolved into a fantastical and glamorous occasion and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the marriage between people and technology.
Film_Strip-030

The above image represented a film strip. The actors all moved in identical unison and it looked like you watching a movie. IRIS is located in the Kodak Theater which is in the heart of Hollywood. The whole show is about the evolution of the movie industry and it made me giddy to witness it right where the magic originally happened.
Projections_CinemaDevices_031

One of my favorite acts was the Cops and Robbers sequence. It plays out like a Dick Tracey skit. The good guys and the bad guys in battle with each other. The pursuit of justice and the evasion of getting caught. I won’t spoil the details in case you get the pleasure of viewing it live, but trampolines were involved and it was so cool to watch!
Rooftops-026

After the show, I was invited to join a blogger’s Q&A with two of the performers, Andrew and Kevin Atherton. They are identical twins who perform aerial tricks on the straps together. They both got involved with gymnastics at age 7 and joined Cirque when they were 24. They were with Varekai for 8 1/2 years before joining the cast of IRIS. In those years, they never missed a single performance due to sickness. These guys really love what they do and you can tell they are very proud to be a part of this show.
AerialStraps-067

They talked about how what they do does involve a bit of risk, but they trust each other with their lives. They said that some people dream of being able to fly and they get to do it for a living.
AerialStraps-034

The performers get a lot of freedom to choreograph their own acts and the music was added later. Danny Elfman, who has scored numerous blockbuster films (The Hunger Games, Alice in Wonderland, Chicago, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) also scored IRIS. It must have been quite a challenge to not have locked video to work with like he was used to. The music was such an important role in the show and it was very well done.
IMG_9893

IRIS will be playing in the Kodak Theater for more than a decade and I already can’t wait to see it again. The performances evolve over time and no two shows are alike. As cast members are added, new talents will be written into the show. Whether you’re an LA local or a visiting tourist, it’s a must see. For tickets, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/IRIS .

PS: I went to Circus school last year to learn how to swing from the trapeze! Click here for my pictures! What do you think? Should I audition for Cirque?

Tickets were provided to us, but as usual, all opinions are my own.

Fussen & Salzburg: Second Time Around October 4, 2011

Where were we? Ah Yes. In Munich. We woke up at the crack of dawn on September 9th and made our way via subway to the airport. There, we picked up our rental car. It turned out to be outrageously expensive, but driving through the Austrian Alps sounded so romantic and I begged Irving to let us do it. I wanted to feel like I was on the Amazing Race navigating through the roads trying to translate the German signs.
IMG_7935

It wasn’t until we buckled our seat belts that Irving admitted he hadn’t actually driven a stick shift in about 15 years. That’s ok babe. It’s like riding a bike. BAHAHA. (spoiler alert: we only stalled twice).

We had some maps from AAA and Google to get us from Germany into Austria and I was confident we’d be fine…. but thank GOD there was a built in GPS because we wouldn’t have even made it out of the airport without that thing. Seriously. My maps were so confusing it would have been a lost cause and I’m pretty sure my plan for a romantic drive would have backfired.
IMG_7937

Before we made it into Salzburg, we made a detour to Fussen, home of the Neuschwanstein Castle. Sure you see gorgeous scenery from a train, but being in the car gave us so much more freedom. Plus the Autobahn is really super fun. Getting on and off the highways was hilarious for us since we don’t know how to downshift and upshift. LOL I have a video I’ll post later.
IMG_7939

We enjoyed the quaint towns along the road and kept giggling that it looked like a postcard.
IMG_7943

And finally we started to see our destination up in the mountains!
IMG_7946

Neuschwanstein! The castle was built by the crazy Ludwig II, a royal who lived in Munich.

IMG_7944

There are two ways to get up to the top. Horse and buggy….
IMG_9532

Or by foot… we chose to walk since we’d been in the car all morning and didn’t want to wait for 2 hours in the line.
IMG_9534

It was actually a pretty easy walk and soon we were up at the top.
IMG_9535

Does it look familiar? It’s the castle that Walt Disney modeled his castle after.
[source]

Sadly we couldn’t go inside (you can only go in with a tour and we would have had to wait a few hours for the next English one.
IMG_9537

But it was still fun to walk around and see the wacky architecture.
IMG_9541

It looks like a lego castle, doesn’t it?
IMG_9539

[FLASHBACK] I visited here in 2003 in the midst of winter. It looks much different now!
snowy castle

The view from the top was just as impressive as the castle itself:
IMG_7956

IMG_9548

And because Irving couldn’t pass up another opportunity to enjoy some Brats (and because it was lunch time), we stopped halfway down the hill for lunch. I was expecting it to be super expensive since it’s kind of a tourist trap, but it was actually quite reasonable.
IMG_9552

And some Pasta for the lady.

IMG_9553 IMG_9554

Across the street was another cute castle that I’m sure is worth a visit, but it was time to hit the road before it got too late.
IMG_9555

Back in the car, we drove away from the castle.
IMG_7962

I kept looking back at it in the distance as it faded away. I love Europe.
IMG_7963

Just a few hours in the car, we made our way into the heart of Salzburg.
IMG_7964

Our first stop was an afternoon tour of the Hellbrunn Palace. When you visit Salzburg, people will ask you if you saw two things: 1.) The Sound of Music Tour and 2.) The Crazy Palace.
IMG_9559

So alas. Here we are at the Crazy Palace. Why is it called that? It looks pretty average, right?
IMG_9558

Until you go around the back and walk through the gardens. Then you realize how fun it is. Let me explain.
IMG_9562

It was built in the 1600s by Markus Sittijus von Hohenems, the Archbishop of Salzburg. And that man had an intense sense of humor. See this outdoor dining area? Seems like a good place to host your guests, right?
IMG_9565

Well the whole place was rigged with secret water tricks that he could turn on and off to surprise and wow his visitors. With the push of a button he could soak them while they ate. And it was all operated with non-electrical power (it was the 1600s, remember?)
IMG_9566

He had strange fountains and childlike displays all over the property that would dance and play on their own.
IMG_9570

IMG_9569 IMG_9594

At one point, Irving got nailed by some hidden fountains!
IMG_9595

There are some displays inside the palace itself but the it’s the exterior that is worth a visit.
IMG_9599

IMG_9608

Know what else Hellbrunn is known for? The Sound of Music gazeebo is located on its property.
IMG_9612

[FLASHBACK] I came here in 2003! (I know, where didn’t I go in 2003?!)
gazeebo from movie

Oh, want to see our car?! Here she is! A Renault!
IMG_9628

Finally we made the drive into the city to find our hotel. On the way, we passed the fortress! Wish we would have had time to up there again. But we had a tight itinerary and couldn’t fit it in.
IMG_7968

We dropped off our bags at the Radisson, but turned right back around to catch some of the city before the sun set.
IMG_7969

Luckily our hotel was close to the river and we were able to walk into town.
IMG_9631

Remember the scene in The Sound of Music when the kids are frolicking in the grass? This is where that was filmed!
IMG_7971

IMG_9634

IMG_9635

We found someone who didn’t look like they’d run away with our camera to take our picture. Such a pretty backdrop.
IMG_7975

IMG_9638

We had just enough time to walk through the main squares before we lost our daylight altogether.
IMG_9641

IMG_9649 IMG_9652

Finally we surrendered to the night and enjoyed a nice dinner out.
IMG_9662

All I wanted was veggies! We found a great place that had a salad bar for me…
IMG_9658

And Oh. My. God. MORE schnitzel for Irving. Believe it.
IMG_9660

Paired with some Austrian Beer. His and Hers.
IMG_9655

It was nice to walk back after dinner and take in the city at night.
IMG_9670

I might have to frame this one. It’s perfect. (Credit goes to Irving).

Sorry, these posts are so long. I fell in love with our photos and had to share them. Just one more Trip Recap post left!

Ghetto Klown: Call your Bank and Press 2

“If you want to learn Spanish, call your bank and press 2”. That was my favorite of the many great jokes we heard John Leguizamo tell Sunday night during his performance of Ghetto Klown. We were invited to the press opening of of the show, which has just come off Broadway. Irving and I are both huge fans of John Leguizamo and were really excited to see him back on the stage.
IMG_8080

Ghetto Klown was written and performed by John himself. He weaves hilarious stories of his youth in with his tough family history as he struggled to become the person he knows he wants to be.
ghetto [source]

John comes from Latino descent and growing up in Jackson Heights, New York was far from easy for his family. He’s a great writer and knows how to tell a great story. When he talked about the harder moments in his life, it was almost uncomfortable to watch. As if he brought you inside a life that you weren’t supposed to see. But that is one of the reasons that makes the show outstanding. It was real. It was raw. It was personal. And he’s brave enough to share it with the world.

I don’t even think this show can be reviewed as a show. You can’t review a person’s life. His stories opened up his vulnerable side when he talked about how he was at war with himself, torn between his personal and professional life. Finding that balance and believing in himself.  I especially loved hearing about his experience in Romeo + Juliet since it’s my favorite movie. He even acted out some of his lines from the movie. I got chills.

The stage was phenomenal. At first it didn’t look like much. Just a desk, a few chairs and projector. But the way the space was used was really unique and impressive. He intertwined video, slides and sound effects to make the stories come to life for the audience.

The theater house, The Montalban Theater, is old and gritty, located in the heart of Hollywood. I can’t think of a more perfect venue for a show like this. The show runs through October 16th and tickets can be found here.
IMG_8084

I love the concept of “Everybody has a Story” and it’s always a treat to hear someone tell theirs… and tell it well. It also makes me reflect on my own life. What’s MY story? What actions along the way have defined my life? Any play that makes you ask yourself questions like that is a winner in my book.

I have to remember to start carrying our good camera with me wherever I go to remind myself to take more pictures.

I’m still psyched about the Photography Challenge so here’s the past two days:

DAY 2 – WHAT I WORE TODAY
We were invited to see Ghetto Klown in Hollywood yesterday and enjoyed a night out in Hollywood (more details about that soon!)
IMG_8084

Here’s my picture artistic picture of what I wore to the show. I love Hollywood even if it’s dirty and it smells funny. There’s something romantic under all that grit.

DAY 3 – CLOUDS
I have to admit that I actually took this picture last week enroute to a Blogger Dinner with Amanda, Andy, Kaitlin and Katherine. I was driving West on the 118 and was blinded by the sun and the golden clouds. I seriously almost pulled over to star at this. These were the most amazing clouds I’ve ever seen in LA.
