A Mammoth Sized Getaway February 12, 2011

This weekend, a bunch of our friends rented two condos for the weekend in Mammoth and invited us to come hang out and ski! We’d be crazy to say no to such a great opportunity. We love to get up to the mountains at least once in the winter to get a dose of skiing in. This was the perfect reason to go!

IMG_3433

We left after work on Friday and started the 5.5 hour drive up. Since we didn’t know what the roads would be like, we took Irving’s Jeep which gets about 16 miles to the gallon! By the time we got there, he was well below ‘E’ and I was starting to panic. He’s such a guy: “We’ve got at least another hour on this tank. Even though it’s on E… it’s not really on E.” OHMYGOSH!!! My dad always told me to never go below a quarter tank, especially in the winter, in case something happened and I had to keep the car going to stay warm. I half wanted us to break down in the middle of nowhere so I could say ‘I told you so’, but alas, we made it up there safe. Lucky break.

The condo we’re staying in is so cute!

What perfect books for a weekend in the mountains!

Look at this cute little squirrel!
IMG_3453

My favorite part is the rocking cordless phone, circa 1991!
IMG_3462

Zach Morris? Are you there?
IMG_3464

Within our great group of friends, there are six kids who were there to ski this weekend. This morning, when I woke up, I could hear the pitter patter of little feet descending down the staircase. It was so nice. They say the cutest things too. One of them kept telling Irving how excited he was to ski because ‘Skiing was his favorite’! Awe! Living in southern California, it’s exciting to see so much snow! And PS. seeing little kids in snowpants and ski boots is the cutest thing in the whole world.

IMG_3432

All the kids and most of the adults got their tickets to head up the mountain, but I decided not to go this time. Every time I ski, my body aches, my muscles hurt and I want to quit after two runs. But everyone else was super excited!
IMG_3420

When we got to the lifts, my phone told me it was 13 degrees outside. ahhh!
IMG_3421

Good thing I came prepared with my Merrel snowmobile boots. These things are the BEST!
IMG_3427

A gorgeous day for some skiing, I’m sure they all had a great time!
IMG_3429

IMG_3436

I said farewell to the group and went on my way to explore the village.
IMG_3438

Mammoth is so cute. It has all the amenities of a huge ski resort, but the charm of a small town.
 IMG_3439IMG_3423

The first thing I did (after filling the Jeep up with gas — PS. $3.99 a gallon up here!) was head to the Snowcreek Fitness Club. This place is kind of a big deal. It’s where almost all of America’s Olympic runners live and train for their events. The altitude is so high here that if they can run here, they can run anywhere.
IMG_3441

I just finished reading Meb Keflezighi’s book and he kept mentioning this place. After a little research, I found out that a lot of my running idols also train there. There’s an elite group of runners who belong to the Mammoth Lakes Track Club. A few members include Deena Kastor, Jennifer Rhines and Sara Hall. When I was driving along the road, I kept picturing these super fast marathoners running here. It is gorgeous!
IMG_3442

IMG_3443

They let me inside and I got to see some of the equipment they use. I was keeping my eye open, but I didn’t recognize anyone. I was thinking about getting a massage there too, I mean if a masseuse is good enough for an Olympian, why not me, right? But I decided against it. It was fun enough just to see it.
IMG_3440

My original plan was to run the 5 miles to the club and back to our condo, but the air is so thin, I could barely walk up a flight of stairs! It’s hard to catch your breath at 9,000 feet. So instead, I spent my afternoon SHOPPING! But before you get all excited, remember that this a town of 3,000 people. The nearest Macy’s is three hours away.

IMG_3448

I did find a few outlet stores and got three new sweaters for $20. SCORE!

Then I took my singles party to a café in town. Soup was sounding good at the time.
IMG_3445

I got the Italian Wedding Soup in a bread bowl, but I have to say, it was mediocre. The soup was a bit off, and the bread wasn’t cooked all the way, it was still a little doughy?! EW! The waitress agreed and didn’t end up charging me for it, but my appetite was ruined. Oh well. With the altitude, I haven’t been very hungry up here anyways.

Everyone should be making their way back here soon, might go read a book and enjoy the peaceful mountain air.

Grapefruit Salad… Genius! February 1, 2011

Sometimes, Irving and I eat at our desks in our office. It’s not ideal, but can be productive. We go over our calendars and lineup upcoming events, discuss emails and sometimes, just catch up on TV shows. Tonight, I looked over and said “What are you eating?”
IMG_3323

He’s like “Oh, a salad! It has lettuce, tomato, cucumber, olives, Munster cheese slices, and some grapefruit.” Good choice on the grapefruit! That looks good!

IMG_3324

He can inhale a Costco-sized pack of Reeces in three minutes flat, but he also knows how to assemble a mean salad. It’s all about balance, people.

I totally had grapefruit envy. Might have to have some for breakfast tomorrow.

We booked our next trip tonight!! This fall, we will be heading to Eastern Europe with Contiki! This will be our 4th time traveling with them, I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a no-stress tour.

T-Minus 5 days until my next half marathon!! Anyone else running Surf City on Sunday?

Sunday Supper at Samba January 30, 2011

It rained in LA today, and I loved every minute of it. We ran around and did a bunch of errands and then I cozied up on the couch and finished reading Meb’s book. I love reading about running, it inspires me. I can not people humans can run 4-minute miles. It boggles my mind. I recommend the book to runners, especially anyone who has done New York or Boston.

We decided to end the weekend with a bang and head to CityWalk for dinner tonight.
IMG_3301

Our dinner companions tonight were the fabulous Erika and Timmy. We both bought a coupon a while back for Samba and we have been dying to try it. It’s always fun to play ‘tourist’ for a night and walk around CityWalk.
IMG_3304

IMG_3308

Samba is tucked in the back, behind the Hard Rock Café.
IMG_3309

It’s a Brazilian Steakhouse served buffet style. There are two parts, first, the unlimited salad bar, and second, fresh meat shaved off of a spit right onto your plate. But first… The Salad Bar!
IMG_3316

They had SO many amazing side dishes.
IMG_3313

IMG_3312

Lots of different kinds of veggies, salads, sides and bread! Oh man, the bread had cheese baked into it. DELICIOUS!
IMG_3314

The staff walks around with all different types of meat, and if you want it, you put this card on the green side, and if you don’t, you flip it over to red.
IMG_3310

They had lamb, beef, chicken, steak, tri-tip all cooked with a different spice or seasoning. My favorite was the bacon-wrapped chicken. MMm!
IMG_3315

The décor was festive and modern. It was swanky yet casual. Very nice.
IMG_3311

In the middle of the meal, these Brazilian dancers came out and danced for a while. It was fun entertainment, I felt like I was at the Rio in Las Vegas.
IMG_3320

IMG_3318

We ate SO much, it was a delicious meal. We went for a mile walk after dinner, I definitely needed that to digest. We’re lucky to have such great friends close by to enjoy these adventures with.
IMG_3321

I’m off to watch the new Hallmark Hall of Fame movie with Betty White! Have a great week!

After our exciting workout with Kathy Kaehler this morning, a few bloggers met at the Sagebrush Cantina for lunch!
IMG_3271

I didn’t feel like we worked out all that hard, but I was starving by the time we got there (and it was only 11:30am!)
IMG_3270

Some awesome conversation ensued. Topics ranged from running, to FoodBuzz, to blog hosting. It was such a great group and I was honored to dine with them.
IMG_3273

Andy, the other ‘Boo’ of Two Boos who Eat joined us for lunch too!
IMG_3272

I soaked up some Vitamin D while I ate my amazing BLTA sandwich (Man, I love Avocado!) It was a fun, relaxing lunch.
It was 75* and sunny over here in LA today.

After Lunch, Sarah (SkinnyRunner) and I headed to Crumbs across the street!
IMG_3274

Man oh man, so many choices! They all looked amazing.
IMG_3275

I decided on the ‘Half-Baked’ flavor, which was a marble cake, buttercream frosting, and pieces of brownies and cookies on top!
IMG_3276

Once home, I split my prized possession with Irving.  Marriage is about compromise, right?
IMG_3278

When I cut it open, I realized they put icing all the way in the middle (Heaven!) I swear, someday I’m going to open up a Cupcake shop that only sells the tops of cupcakes (It’s all about the frosting, people!)
IMG_3277

The rest of the afternoon was spent cleaning up the place, cooking dinner, and hanging out in my jammies. Hopefully we’ll start a movie soon and call it a night. Til tomorrow!

Relaxing Weekday Evenings January 27, 2011

My life just isn’t that exciting on weekdays. We’re pretty boring people during the week (and then get all crazy on the weekends I guess!)

We watched a lot of Jeopardy this week. HAHA It’s sort of become our nightly cooking routine.
IMG_3185 IMG_3186

One night, we cooked up one of our Dream Dinners. This one was a recipe created by Bon Greene, one of Oprah’s experts.

[source]

It was a healthy take on Sweet and Sour chicken.
IMG_3178

The chicken was baked with oranges, pineapples, apricots, figs and oranges. It was deliciously sweet and we couldn’t believe there was no added sugar, it was all natural.
IMG_3180

Paired with some orange slices on the side, it definitely hit the spot.

In other random news, I ate a Trader Joes burrito for lunch one day this week off of a Hanukah plate.
I thought this was HIL-ARIOUS. I was going to take a picture, but then the burrito kind of exploded in the microwave and ruined my plans.

Have you guys checked out QWiki.com yet? It’s a pretty neat interactive website. It’s so cool, you don’t even realize you’re learning stuff.

For example: http://www.qwiki.com/q/#!/Marathon

Oh, and just for some added cuteness, I got to snuggle with the infamous Hudson this morning.
He was totally worth the Parking Ticket I got while hanging out at his place today. TOTALLY worth it.
IMG_3188

I’m up at 6 for a run in the morning. And because I’m announcing it on the blog, I HAVE to actually do it.
I’m off to watch Teen Mom 2! Night!
