The Europe Essentials–Packing Part 1 August 25, 2011

We’ve got a big trip to Europe on the horizon that we’re getting pretty pumped about. We have been looking forward to this trip since our last trip 10 months ago! Can’t believe we’re already in the packing stage now! Our annual international vacation is almost here! We try to go abroad at least once a year, and so far so good! This year is taking us to Eastern Europe with Contiki Tours.

Click to enlarge. Blue Dots are where I’ve been, Pink Dots are what’s next!
map

Our most recent international trips together:
2010 – Egypt; Dubai
2009 – Russia & The Baltic; Iceland
2008 – Italy

I was so excited to come home from work today to see that Irving’s already begun pulling out all the travel gear and piling it up in the corner. It made me giddy! I don’t really like packing, but I love oogling over travel gadgets. I thought I’d share some of my favorite essentials.

Travel Sheets
Anyone who has ever slept on a train or in a hostel knows how important these are. We each have a set and they have been lifesavers. We’re always the envy our tour when we are able to cozy up without getting the heebie jeebies at night. They fold up really small and stash in the bottom of your luggage. We don’t travel without these now.
IMG_7259

Adapters and Converters
We have a collection of plugs for all over the world. The little ones on the right are for Europe and can charge cameras and phones. The big guy on the left is big enough to charge our laptop. Check your devices before you leave to make sure you have the right ones.
IMG_7267

Travel Wallet
I know these sound kind of nerdy, but they’re essential. Mine is on the right and goes around my neck under my shirt. It will hold my passport, money and credit cards. Irving’s on the right hooks to his belt and goes under his waist band. We LOVE Eagle Creek products. These have a dri-fit back to them so they won’t chafe or rub on your skin even in the heat. They’re super light weight and pretty indiscreet.

IMG_7274

Travel Locks
Just tiny TSA compliant locks for your luggage. We’re not so worried about the airlines as much as leaving them in hotel lobbies and train stations. Sometimes we’ll check our luggage and it just gives us a little peace of mind that no one is snooping. It’s not a fail-proof method, but it’s a deterrent and we’ve been lucky so far.

We also travel with a copy of each other’s keys in case one gets locked inside. (This happened to me once in Spain! Some guy came with a hack saw to cut my lock off for me when I locked my keys inside my bag!)
IMG_7283

Sleep Mask and Ear Plugs
I use my mask and ear plugs on the plane, busses, trains and even hotels. It can pretty much guarantee a good night’s rest. Some airlines provide them for you, but I bring my own just in case.
IMG_7281

Luggage Tags
Goes without saying, but label your stuff. Checked and carryon bags should have your info on it just in case.
IMG_7286

Luggage Scale
We don’t travel WITH this, but we use it before we go. Most airlines and tour companies have strict weight restrictions so using one of these handy scales at home can help prevent an unpacking frenzy at the airport.
IMG_7287

Passport
Duh. We also carry a copy of each other’s too in case on of us loses it. An embassy can reissue a passport in a pinch, but having a copy of it will expedite the process.
IMG_7329

Tour Book
Just ONE book. Not seven. We do lots of research before we leave. We love knowing about the history, culture and art in the places we visit.
IMG_7252

But when it’s time to jetset, we only bring ONE book. And that one book almost always is a DK Eyewitness guide. We LOVE their books. Great pictures, maps and city highlights.
IMG_7256

Eagle Creek Pack-It System
Ok, so this isn’t a necessity to some, but it is the way we travel. We LOVE using these travel folders, pouches and cases. Everything from clothes, toiletries and chargers gets packed in it’s own case. It makes it easy to find things when you’re in a rush in the morning. It keeps everything organized and together. An organized traveler is a happy traveler! (Full Disclosure: I learned everything I know about organized travel from my husband. He is the KING of suitcase packing. <3)
IMG_7291

We’ve got tons of different shapes and sizes so everything has a place.
IMG_7294

I swear this post isn’t sponsored by Eagle Creek (but it should be! We love their stuff!)

Speaking of Organized travel…
I bought Irving these packing lists for Christmas, it’s got almost everything you can imagine and it makes packing a breeze.
IMG_7323

Travel Gnome
Don’t leave home without it!
IMG_7321

For a few more ideas on what to bring, here’s a post a wrote a few months back.

I plan to post about clothing packing later. Stay tuned.

Have any tips of your own? Or questions about packing for a 17 day trip for a later post?

Don’t Ever Fly Spirit Airlines On Your Birthday! August 18, 2011

Filed under: Travel — Kelocity @ 7:00 am
Tags: , , ,

Ok, remember last week when I wrote about how I was nervous about flying Spirit Airlines again? Well, let’s just say that my instincts were right. Although I had no problems on my flight TO Chicago, the seats are disgusting, they don’t clean the planes in between flights and it’s just plain gross in there. Also, I think since the prices are “low”, they attract a clientele that you don’t usually see on other carriers. (I know that is judgmental, but seriously, some of those people looked homeless.)

When I was checking in with TSA, the guy made some comment about how their boarding passes actually don’t comply with FAA standards, but they continue to print them that way. The information is hard to read on them and the agents hate them. (Way to piss off your airports, Spirit!)

My flight back to LA had a scheduled three hour layover in Las Vegas. I wasn’t happy about this, but at least I got a good deal on it, so I made the most of it. I get to Las Vegas, have a nice dinner by myself and read a bit of “The Help” in the terminal. They had slot machines there since it was Vegas, but I wasn’t feeling very lucky.

Yep. Not lucky indeed. Right when the flight was supposed to be boarding, they quietly announced that the flight was delayed for TWO hours! Now my 3 hour layover had turned into FIVE hours! I could have driven home to LA in less time than that. Ugh! And right after they made that announcement, their counters looked like this…
IMG_7227

Yep. No staff. No one to ask your questions to or anything. And now I wouldn’t be getting back to LA until 1:45am. I called Irving, we chatted for a bit and then I read more of my book.
IMG_7224

So 12:30a rolls around and they announce that the flight had been cancelled since the crew couldn’t work that many hours. Whhhaaattt??? Didn’t know you know that would have been the case, oh, I don’t know, FIVE HOURS AGO?! The way they announced it was almost like WE were an inconvenience to THEM. Ugh!

So many people at the gate were drunk (they’d been drinking for five hours in the airport bars for crying out loud!) I was already annoyed that I had to listen to them screaming and laughing way louder than anyone should in the middle of the night. I was the first one in line and they gave me a hotel and meal voucher and a ticket on an 8am flight the next day. They said they had nothing any earlier.

I asked if they could put me on another airline so I’d make it to work on time, but they guy laughed and said “oh, no other airline will accept our vouchers”. HAHA Seriously? That alone speaks volumes.

Want a few other reasons why Spirit is the worst? They charge for Carry On bags and water during the flight. (PS… water in the airport was cheaper than the water on board!)

So I called Irving and asked if he could find me any other flights leaving earlier, and Southwest had one leaving at 6am. He booked it for me and I got BACK in line and waited another 40 minutes or so to talk to the agent. When I got up there I said rather loudly I wanted a refund because Southwest was better, cheaper and more convenient. The agreed to give me my money back, but I had to surrender my hotel voucher first. I laughed and told him no. He argued with me for a few minutes but I won. Thank you very much. Jerk.

And since it was past midnight, it is now officially my birthday. Guess I can’t say that I never celebrated my birthday in Vegas, huh?

So the good news is that it is now 1:30am and I have a place to stay for the night.
IMG_7229

But the bad news is that it is 1:30am and I have to get up at 3:30a to make my Southwest Flight.
IMG_7231

And to top it off, I missed the hotel shuttle and had to wait 15 more minutes for it to come back. In the meantime, Mr. Vegas Drunk from the airport terminal decides that now is a good time to strike up a conversation and “get to know each other”. Ew, gross. I tried to ignore him.

When the bus finally came, he SAT NEXT TO ME. ugh! He was wearing a bathing suit and a wife beater and had zero luggage. I’m pretty sure he was so drunk that he lost it somewhere. He was all sweaty and gross and practically sitting on me naming off reasons why we should be get rooms next to each other and eat out of the mini bar.

When we got to the hotel, I told the guy to give me a room as far away from that creep as possible.

After a 1.5 hour “nap” in the hotel, I made it back to the airport and had an uneventful 42 minute flight home. Yep. After all that, the flight was only 42 minutes.

If you’re counting, I think I got 9 total hours of sleep in three nights. Somehow I made it through the workday, but when I got home at 5:15, I had just enough energy to open my birthday presents! But I was asleep by 5:30pm!

I am NEVER flying Spirit Again! When I called today to ask about my refund, they had the gall to ask me if I’d like to apply for their credit card. I thought they were kidding! NEVER EVER EVER.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, BIRTHDAY PRESENTS!!!!
IMG_7246
I was in love with Irving’s super awesome “girls rule” wrapping paper.
IMG_7248
I got some really fun gifts including the LA Noire Game for the xbox!! It should be arriving this week and I can’t wait!!!
IMG_7249
I’m pretty sure Irving has been waiting for 10 years to be able to buy me a video game. Can’t wait to play it! Thanks, love!
So I’m officially 28 years old now. People keep telling me that 28 is a great year. I’m sure it will be. Looking forward to it!
Top of the Sears, I mean Willis, Tower! August 17, 2011
Sunday morning, we had plans to go to the top of the Sears Willis Tower. Even though I’d been to Chicago twice before, I’d never been up there! IMG_7186
Laurie explained that the Willis is known as the King, and this crown building is the Queen! They kind of do look like they’d be in love, I suppose.
IMG_7188
We thought we had VIP tickets, but apparently there was still a long line. Oops!
IMG_7190
I had a flight to catch in a few hours, so we convinced the employees to take us up the back freight elevators to bypass the movie and the crowds. Not sure how, but it worked! Up to the top we go!
IMG_7191
IMG_7192
My mom is afraid of heights, but she did really well! Good job, mom!
IMG_7194
Looking down at the “Queen”! My, she’s short!
They also have these glass boxes that jut out of the building that you can stand in. SO cool!
IMG_7215
And no, my mom did NOT go on this. LOL
IMG_7220
Why do both of my sisters pose so well for the camera and then when it’s my turn I do this?! No seriously, Why?!
IMG_7222
I guess that’s my ta-da pose or something.
How amazing is this picture?! So neat! Sisters in the city!
Shortly after this, we had a fun leisurely lunch just chatting about anything and everything. It was so nice and relaxing. Then it was time for me to go. Sad, I know. There were definitely tears on the “L” platform, but we were all so happy to have a fun weekend together!
It’s a shame that such a nice weekend would end with such a horrible airline experience. Stay tuned for that trainwreck of a story!
What did I miss in Chicago? Have you been there? I’m making a list for next time!
I’ve been to Navy Pier already. Anything else? I love that town!
From Surpris-er to Surpris-ee!
So I was in Chicago to see my mom and my sisters, but Laurie didn’t know I was coming, so she was completely surprised to see me standing there in her living room at 7:30 in the morning on Saturday. We walked around the city all day, and when we came back to her place, we were exhausted. But then there was a knock on the door and we both thought it was the pizza man who we had ordered from.
Imagine my surprise (and Laurie’s) when my oldest friend, Linsay, walked in! We have been friends for 25 years! She was the first friend I ever had and we are still close today!! She was in town to see a college friend and when she found out I was going to Chi-town, she coordinated with my mom to surprise me! aweeee!!!! Now I’m the one who was surprised!
IMG_7154
She’s one of those friends that I don’t get to see very often, but when we’re together it’s as if we’d never been separated. We had so much to catch up on since her wedding in February!
IMG_7156
Laurie then announced “Is there anyone else I should be expecting this weekend?” hee hee. We took the whole gang to Ed DeBrevic’s for dinner. It’s kind of like Dick’s Last Resort, a restaurant where they make fun of you while you eat and make rude comments. It was very funny.
IMG_7160
IMG_7157
IMG_7159
They also did hilarious dances around the restaurant and the staff wears ridiculous outfits.
IMG_7168
And somebody told them it was my birthday that weekend and they brought me over their signature “World’s Smallest Sundae” which was just as it seems! One bite of ice cream with whip cream and hot fudge in a tiny shot glass!
IMG_7169
Awe, I can’t imagine a better birthday! So fun!
IMG_7171
IMG_7173
After, we hung out with everyone back at Laurie’s place and my mom surprised me with a homemade cake. (Don’t ask me when she had time to do that!) I was totally surprised and it was SO delicious!
IMG_7183
Laurie’s roommate is seriously a saint for letting all of us crash at their place all weekend! Thanks, Girl!
IMG_7185
And yes, Laurie totally paid money for that poster behind them. Sometimes, I can’t believe we are related.
More to come from Chicago! Good times ahead!
PS…. The Winner of the Vanilla Frosting Chips is Amanda! She shares my love of Vanilla!!! I will get your chips to you soon!! Congrats!
A Windy City Adventure August 16, 2011
I was in Chicago for exactly 34 hours and it was amazing how much we fit in! It was a fabulous weekend filled with some of my favorite ladies in one of my favorite cities. I already can’t wait to go back.
Friday night, I left LAX at midnight or so. The terminal was a mess! Lots of construction going on, but they had funny signs to make up for it. Thankfully my Spirit Airlines flight was ok on the way there (the flight on the way back however was horrendous, but we’ll save that for another post).
IMG_6976
I asked for an exit row and surprisingly I got one! I kind of felt bad since I’m only 5’1”, but I greatly appreciated the extra leg room since it was a red eye. It was only a 3.5 hour flight though, so I only got about two solid hours of sleep.
IMG_6978
Soon enough, it was morning and I was in Chicago! I made my way via the “L” to my sister, Laurie’s apartment. It was supposed to be raining, but it actually turned out to be a gorgeous day!
IMG_6983
I got a little lost walking to her place, so my mom walked over to rescue me!
IMG_6985
Laurie had no idea I was there (my surprise worked!) With a few texts and phone calls, we were able to completely catch her off guard!
IMG_6988
Surprise!!!!!!! She was so confused when she walked in. Her look was priceless.
IMG_6992
But I think she was excited and happy! Hi Laurie!
IMG_6996
She’s currently in grad school at Rush University and she was really happy to show off her awesome campus!
IMG_6999
I got to her place by 7:30am and from there we just kept going and going! We hopped back on the L and headed into the city.
IMG_7000
I missed my sisters! I hadn’t seen both of them together since Christmas!
IMG_7001
I love cities that are walkable and have public transportation. I kind of like the grit of city life.
IMG_7002
Of course, first stop was Dunkin Donuts!! I was moving on 2 hours of sleep, remember! But I opted for my usual iced tea. Delicious!
IMG_7005
IMG_7007
We had fun finding fun photoshoot locations. Strike a pose!
IMG_7008
Uh…. I just don’t understand why agents in Milan aren’t calling me (Or Laurie) back! haha just kiddin.
IMG_7009
IMG_7014
I LOVED this elevator! It was in The Wit Hotel (which looked amazing by the way!)
IMG_7016
Hi mom! She was happy to have her girls together, I’m sure!
IMG_7015
The views from the top were pretty great! We could see Millennium Park and the Bean (our next destination).
IMG_7017
IMG_7018
Tourists in the city!
IMG_7021IMG_7024
IMG_7026
IMG_7027
The Bean! It was rather dirty on the day we were there, but still pretty awesome.
IMG_7031
Hey Chicas!
IMG_7032
IMG_7036
IMG_7038
Me and mom! So fun!
IMG_7035
I brought Reese too!! She LOVES to travel!
IMG_7034
Laurie brought Newton too! I think they really missed each other!
IMG_7047
Below the Bean!
IMG_7040
IMG_7044
I love public artwork like this. It really classes up a city, it’s so neat! I really need to do more touring in Los Angeles because I’m sure there are lots of great displays here too!
IMG_7052
Sisters!
IMG_7064
IMG_7061
The original plan was to do yoga in the park, but we were too late for it. And it was already super hot by then anyways. Looked like fun though! Does anyone know if LA has free workout classes in parks anywhere? I should do some research.
IMG_7065
Mom thought it was cool that Lalapalooza was here just the week before!
IMG_7089
IMG_7068
IMG_7069
More public art. This one was a video monitor above a giant fountain.
IMG_7070
IMG_7072
We didn’t have time to go inside, but we walked past the Art Institute of Chicago.
PS, how amazing is this picture? **pats self on back**
IMG_7073
BAHAHA. Laurie, did you see this? I could never live there because I LIVE on ketchup.
IMG_7077
We got a little lost, but we eventually found the Buckingham Fountain. So cool! Looked like something from Europe!
IMG_7078
I love the skyline in the background!
IMG_7083
Know what it was famous for? Skyline looked a little different then didn’t it? ha!
IMG_7086
IMG_7088
It was SO HOT! We were just dying out there. We needed some refreshment. stat.
IMG_7091
The perfect liquid lunch. I always get the Peanut Butter Moo’d and I add blueberries. YUM!
IMG_7092
And then the walk continued back down Michigan.
IMG_7096
IMG_7098
Oh the canals just stop my heart. Who wouldn’t want to live here?! Amazing!
IMG_7099
Mikaela’s one request was to see the Marilyn Monroe statue next to the Chicago Tribune building. It wasn’t too hard to find.
IMG_7101
IMG_7104
I heard it was quite controversial since tourists can walk right under her…. ahem… dress!
IMG_7110 IMG_7109
Apparently it is quite popular for bachelor parties and wedding pictures. LOL Shame, shame!IMG_7113
She was nearly as tall as the buildings! I thought it was pretty funny and I texted Irving a picture. tee hee hee!
IMG_7120
The Chicago Tribune building is pretty neat too because of the art on the outside walls.
IMG_7116
Scattered throughout were stones from other buildings around the world. I had fun counting the ones from places I’d seen in real life.
Day 1
Old meets the new!
IMG_7117
IMG_7134
IMG_7141
By now, we had already been walking for almost five hours. My sisters wanted to shop in the huge Forever 21 there, but my mom and I sat down in the front and chit-chatted for a half hour and looked at the gorgeous chandeliers.
IMG_7149
We made it to the Sears Willis Tower and then we saw the Armageddon-looking clouds rolling through the city. It looked like it was straight out of a movie! Yikes!
IMG_7151
Luckily we scored a ride home and just narrowly escaped the rain! It was 2pm and I was ready for a nap. Stay tuned for part 2!
