A runner with an appetite for adventure!

Traveling Together January 14, 2011

Let’s face it, I’m a lucky girl.

I’m lucky in love with this man:

We love being home in LA, but we are happier people when we travel. We both have this lust for the ‘seeing and doing’ in life. The adventure of planning and the prospect of a road trip. We get giddy thinking up ways to explore more. Travel definitely defines us, and we love to do it together.

But rest assured, we each also have our own passions and hobbies. I love my craft nights and running. And this man LOVES his golf!

When Irving agreed to come to Phoenix for my marathon weekend, I thought he was just being nice. I kept asking him, “Are you sure you want to come all the way out? I’ll be busy doing my running thing.” But he told me he’d come anyways and would love to come explore Phoenix a little bit. What a guy!

And then I discovered this!

Just a mere .3 miles from the Race Finish line… is a golf course!

My days will be packed with Race Expos, Running, and Post Running festivities. And he’ll be happily golfing in the desert sun for a couple of days.

Marriage is all about balance and compromise and this weekend is going to be amazing because of that. We will each be fulfilled with things that make us happy, and on Monday, we plan to hang out together and catch up before making the trek back to LA. Can’t wait!

The Grilled Cheese Truck!! January 9, 2011

For those of you who don’t live in Los Angeles, there’s a phenomenon that started a few years ago called ‘Food Trucks’. It’s a bunch of trucks who drive around and have awesome menus. They don’t have a solid location, so you have to check twitter to find out where they’ll be next. I’ve been DYING to try the ‘Grilled Cheese Truck’, but it always seems to evade me! (And the lines are usually really long!)

But yesterday, we were in the right place at the right time and we were right nearby where the truck was parked. The Mini Cooper dealership was having an event and the grilled cheese was FREE! (Are you kidding me? Free Grilled cheese?!)

While we waited in line, look who we spotted!
IMG_2838

Yea Baby! Groooovy!

We were debating what to order… but it was an easy decision since they’re famous for their ‘Mac & Cheese Grilled Cheese’.

Think about that for a second… Mac & Cheese inside of a grilled cheese sandwich.

mac

Sounds a little strange, but trust me on this one.

Irving got the same thing, but with the Rib Meat inside.

It also came with a cup of Tomato Soup (which was surprisingly awesome)!

Thank you Mini Dealer for the free, yummy lunch!!

When we got back home, we topped off lunch with some Sea Salt Caramels.

OH MY GOSH! They were AMAZING! Sweet and salty in the same bite. Delicious!

Grilled Cheese + Chocolate = HAPPY WEEKEND!

New Year, New Possibilities! January 6, 2011

The week after Christmas is always bitter sweet. We were coming off a high of friends, family, food and festivities. Lots of late nights laughing with my sisters, traveling coast to coast, presents to give and receive. It’s a hard month to top.

But I also enjoy the transition into the new year. It’s a chance to start fresh, make resolutions and clean up a bit. All the ornaments get wrapped back up til next season. It’s sad to put them away, but also exciting to look forward to the other great things up ahead.
IMG_2828

I’m not sure what I’m looking forward to most this year. It’s only the middle of January, but I’m already excited for the fun things we have planned for the summer and fall. We’ve got about four or five trips already planned and that definitely makes me happy.

Tonight, Irving and I went for a long walk after dinner. Hand in hand we discussed how lucky we are to have each other to share our life adventures with. We were bouncing ideas off each other. Where will the next big trip be? We have lots to think about, but we’re leaning towards Eastern Europe. Contiki has a great tour that goes to Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Slovakia and Poland. Sign me up! We’re still in the discussion phase now, but I was practically skipping down the street just thinking about it tonight.

In other news, I made a killer Beef Stew tonight. It was my first time using my crock pot, and it was a learning experience.

Lesson #1: Not all crockpots are the same size! I used this old crockpot cookbook, and I started chopping away… until I realized that it wasn’t all going to fit!
IMG_2832

I guess mine is smaller than a traditional size?  So I will be making Beef Stew #2 on Sunday to use up the meat and extra veggies!

Live and learn. It came out fantastic though. We served it with a hunk of french bread. Life doesn’t get any better than that.

Hopefully 2011 brings me a year full of new and easy recipes. Got any good crockpot ones?

(GUEST POST) 2010: A Golf Odyssey December 31, 2010

Since the day Kelocity launched, Kelley has been asking me to provide a guest post.
This is my first.

There is nothing I love more than my wife.  Unfortunately, my work schedule last weekend kept us apart for the holiday.
With her braving the winter weather blast in Boston I took the opportunity to rendezvous with my other loves, travel and golf… not necessarily in that order.

But this wasn’t just a trip… it was an odyssey.
54 holes in 72 hours on some of the best courses in the West!

My mom didn’t want me to be alone for the holiday, so she tagged along.

Yellow & Black Golf Bag + Yellow & Black Travel Bag = 100% Intentional
Yellow & Black Golf Bag + Yellow & Black Travel Bag + Yellow & Black VW Beatle = 100% Luck… it was a rental car.
Golf Trip- Day 1 (2)

My first round was at Primm Valley Golf Club, just on the border of California and Nevada.
They have two courses, Desert and Lakes.  I played the Lakes course.

Warming up…
Golf Trip- Day 1 (4)

This was our view while we grabbed a bite to eat at the club house.  Stunning!
Golf Trip- Day 1 (7)

1st Tee.

Golf Trip- Day 1 (10)

Fantastic conditions on a fantastic course.

Golf Trip- Day 1 (12)

Golf Trip- Day 1 (16)

Golf Trip- Day 1 (18)

We stayed the first night in Las Vegas.

Day 2 (Christmas Day) was at Badlands Golf Course in Summerlin, just a few miles North West of the Las Vegas Strip.

Not only was the course amazing, so were the homes that looked down on it…
Golf Trip- Day 2 (8)

Golf Trip- Day 2 (11)

Golf Trip- Day 2 (20)

Stay focused Irving.  You are here to golf, not daydream.
Golf Trip- Day 2 (3)

Golf Trip- Day 2 (4)

Check out the view from the tee box.
It’s a long carry over the desert to hit the fairway, good thing I am focused.
Golf Trip- Day 2 (15)

After that shot, your travel down the path to find this…
The octagon building is a workout room.  Just past the workout room is a helicopter.
Golf Trip- Day 2 (16)

Wait, what?  A HELICOPTER?!?!
I thought about this for a while.  This guy has a helicopter parked in his backyard.
Truth is, if I had a home in Vegas on an amazing golf course… with a helicopter, I too would park it in the backyard.
I mean where else would you park it?  In the front yard?  That would be such an eyesore.

Golf Trip- Day 2 (18)

Oh no!  The temperature started to drop into the 60s, time to pull out the sweatshirt.
(I think this was they day that Kel called me to tell me she had to shovel snow twice.)
Golf Trip- Day 2 (29)

Golf Trip- Day 2 (34)

After the round we got in the car and drove to Mesquite, Nevada.

It’s about an hour North of Vegas just before you hit Arizona and Utah.

We stayed that night in Mesquite and woke up for an early round.
This was actually the course that I was most excited for.

Wolf Creek Golf Course in Mesquite is listed as one of the top 50 courses in the country.
Golf Trip- Day 3 (135)

It has been described as “the Disneyland of golf courses.”
And “the Pebble Beach of desert golf.”
I agree with both.

Just have a look at this place…

And here we go…
Golf Trip- Day 3 (23)

Here is the view from the back tee’s on the 2nd hole.

The fairway is over the ridge to the left side of this picture.
Look just right of center in this picture.  My mom is standing at the white tees, where I played from.

A closer look…

I have never seen views like this on a golf course…

This is about as close to other golfers that I got that day.
See them on the ridge?  That is a tee box!
Golf Trip- Day 3 (42)

What a way to end the year!
Have a very Happy New Year everyone.  See you in 2011!
Cheers,
-Irving

The World Goes Up and Down December 22, 2010

Filed under: Happy — Kelocity @ 8:18 pm

I had the worst day today. It was just sad, slow, dreary and lonely. I really blame the rain. A week without sunshine has really zapped my energy, motivation and cheeriness. At first, I was LOVING the rain. I am an east coaster, I love when it rains. But enough is enough. Where is my California Sun?!

We even had THUNDER today!! That’s definitely a rarity in LA. Don’t get much of that.

My Gmail tells me the weather, and today it looked like this!! Yikes!

I think I’m also getting sad that I will be sans husband for the holidays. I’m really excited to have my family and friends all to myself, but I’m really gonna miss the hubby.

A busy day of work (and then getting rear-ended on the 405 North during Rush Hour) made me more and more frustrated. But then I looked out my window and saw this!!

Not just ONE rainbow…. but TWO!

Then my friend gave me homemade Christmas cookies and everything was right in the world again. Sometimes we just need little reminders to cheer up and enjoy the small things.
