How to Store Travel Keepsakes July 7, 2011

When we travel, we bring back a lot of mementos. Things like ticket stubs, airline tickets, postcards and brochures. Most of that is slowly making its way into my scrapbooks (photos forthcoming!) But the rest of it ends up in ratty white envelopes.  That’s just not how I want to preserve them. We travel around the world, the last thing I want to see is museum tickets smashed inside a box. I want my future kids to thumb through them someday and marvel at all the things his/her cool parents did. And white envelopes just wouldn’t want to be very impressive.

I love old looking things like bundles of love letters, and treasures wrapped in brown paper packages tied up with string…these are a few of my favorite things! (couldn’t resist!)

I just love the idea of preserving my memories to rediscover them down the road. I don’t really save a lot of things, but things like this really make me happy.

For a while, I’ve been looking for the right kind of envelope that would look classy, be functional and last through the years. I wanted something similar to this, but I couldn’t find them in the size I wanted. Plus I didn’t really like the orangey office-style color.

But this week, I found something fun in Paper Source. We bought all of our wedding invitation supplies there, so I knew I could trust the quality.

I bought two packs of the A9 envelopes in the “paper bag” color. It almost looks like recycled or homemade paper. Loved it!

They were simple and elegant, and I didn’t want to mess too much with them, but I had to label them somehow. I just acquired a set of stencils from a friend and I’m in love with the font. It’s classy and fun.

So I got to work labeling them. First up was Italy.

I hated it. Especially the way the year looks at the top. Nothing popped. And duh! If these envelopes were upright in a box, I couldn’t read the label! I had to put the country at the TOP of the envelope. I’ll chalk that one up as “practice”. Let’s start over. This time, in pencil first!

Then I went over it with a black sharpie.

Then I used a cute little stamp in the lower right hand corner to put the date.

It’s definitely closer to what I had envisioned… but still didn’t pop.  This baby needs color!

I love Sharpies. Especially these ultra fine tip ones. I did a few trial runs on my “test” envelope to see how the colors looked on the brown background.
Travel Enveopes (16)

Yep. This would work.
Travel Enveopes (18)

Success! I think they look cute!

Here’s a few more I did tonight.

And most importantly, They’ll look great once filled with travel keepsakes and all lined up in a nice box.

I love holiday weeks because even though it feels like Wednesday, it’s already Thursday! It’s been a relatively uneventful week in house. Other than a trip to Costco, I don’t think we’ve really left the house other than to go to work.
Irving got a a new FIFA World Cup xbox game, and I’m deep into the third Twilight book, Eclipse, so we’re happy sitting put and enjoying some down time. I really should get out and go for a walk at least. Perhaps tonight.

According to Random Integer, the winner of the popchips is…..

The awesome people over at popchips sent me some samples to review. I’ve had the original and BBQ flavors before, but I was excited to see what new varieties they had as well.
6bags

popchips are all-natural and have some pretty great stats:
-They’re popped (not baked or fried)
-Less than half the fat of fried chips
-No transfat, saturated fat or cholesterol
-No preservatives, colors or fake flavors
-No greasy residue

pop

They also sent me a sweet bag clip (how cute is that? A bag clip from a potato chip company! Brilliant!)

Irving and I dug into the first bag right away. We chose the Sour Cream and Onion first because it’s a flavor we don’t get very often, but I used to LOVE those kinds of chips!

The flavor was perfect. Not too salty or overbearing. The right amount of tastiness for the chip. popchips are denser than regular chips. Almost like Munchos, remember those? MMmm! (but these are much healthier!)

I couldn’t show you a bag of chips without subjecting you to another photo of my face! haha.
PS….. I spy Irving in the mirror!

The next flavors we tried were shared with our friends (and new parents!) Erika and Timmy! They grabbed the BBQ and sea salt & vinegar flavors. It was the perfect pre dinner party snack! Light, satisfying and delicious. I think they liked them!

On our roadtrip up to San Francisco, I had the salt & pepper flavor to keep me company. I always get hungry on long car trips, probably out of boredom. But popchips were the perfect snack for the road. I really liked these. I’d say they were a bit on the salty side, but the pepper flavor was PERFECT. They kept my mouth happy.

I still have the Cheddar and Original flavors left, and I’ll probably save those for a Hollywood Bowl night or for a time when I am craving something munchy.

Thanks again to popchips for letting me try the new flavors!

For more information on popchips, check out their website or their blog!

Want to win some free chips??? Leave a comment below and tell me what flavor you want to try.
I’ll randomly pick a winner on Thursday morning to receive a coupon for a free bag!

Gelato on the Go

Sunday, we had a great lunch with Irving’s our mom and grandma up in the Bay Area.

The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and the company was fun. It was a nice way to end the weekend.

We said goodbye and got back on the road to head back to LA. We knew we had a 6-hour drive ahead of us, and decided that some gelato was in order. Costco now carries it in three flavors (Chocolate Chip, Berry and Pistachio) at select locations, so it sounded like something we should try. It’s 3 HUGE scoops for $1.50. But truthfully, it was sub-par. It tasted more like ice cream than gelato, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Especially on a 90* day.

Yep, I indulged in some sugar, I figure once a week can’t hurt, right?

Does your Costco have Gelato yet?
