My Run… The Movie March 31, 2011

A few weeks back, we got tickets to see the movie ‘My Run’, which is a documentary about a middle-aged man who ran 75 marathons in 75 days in a quest to raise awareness for Single Parenthood. I can’t even imagine running two marathons in a row, let alone 75?! It sounded like a compelling story, so we were excited to go.

The movie was put on by Fathom Events, which usually does a great job picking really good stories and telling them on the big screen. We’ve been to almost all of their events in the past few months. But I have to say, “My Run” didn’t hit the mark. At all.

Terry Hitchcock sounds like a great man with a great story in real life. He’s got a really big heart that I admire…. but the movie did a really bad job of portraying it. I went to film school and I work in the industry, so to me, it doesn’t matter how great the story is… if you can’t tell it properly, you’re going to lose me.

Terry’s run (the 75 marathons in 75 days) actually took place in 1996, the year the Olympics were in Atlanta. So the footage was pretty bad. And the 80s music and cheesy edit transitions really dated this film.

It had a lot of potential, and I actually think it would make a good book, but they did a bad job convincing me I should care about the story. I’m just being honest.

Anyways, the night was redeemed when I saw this movie poster in the mall.IMG_5010

I can’t wait to watch this week’s episode on my tivo!

Here I come Amy and Ricky!

She Runs LA!

I love running. I’ll never win any marathons or anything, but it doesn’t matter. I still love it. My first marathon was the Nike Women’s Marathon in 2005 when I first moved out to LA. And since then, I’ve completed 13 more full or half marathon races. I started running as a way to meet people and to do something good for myself.

Back in the day, even before I joined Team in Training, I used to run with the Nike Club Team. We’d meet a couple of times a week for 3-5 mile runs around the city. It feels like a lifetime ago, but it was fun. Nike even provided dinner for all the runners each time!

But now, Nike is taking it to the next level. On April 27-28, Nike is hosting a Virtual 10K race. But this isn’t your average 10K. This is Girls Night Out — Nike Style!
Introducing: She Runs LA Powered by Nike+!

From Nike: There’s no start line, no finish line and definitely no skinny guys in short shorts lining up in front of you before the gun goes off. It’s just you, your girlfriends and the city you love to run. And afterwards? Forget the usual free bananas and sports drinks. Nike is hosting a serious celebration, where you’ll trade your sports bra for skinny jeans and live it up with 5,000 college girls from all over the city.

Sign me up! I’ll be participating in this event for sure! (Lots of other bloggers are too!) Who’s with us?
All you have to do is Register Here and run a 10k (anywhere you want) between April 27th and April 28th. Full details on the website. Anyone who registers gets invited to a swanky LA Party (complete with a Red Carpet!) at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA on April 28th at 7pm. It will be a night of fashion, dancing and a musical guest ‘you won’t want to miss’! They’ve promised celebrity appearances too! EEEeee!
Now I need a new dress…..
If you register, let me know! I’ll be getting  up at the crack of dawn on April 28th to run my 6.2 miles. Anyone want to join me?
————-

EDITED TO ADD: The first 50 people to respond will have their registration fee waived and will get to be a part of Nike’s first ever digital race, She Runs LA, and see Mike Posner in concert!”

Squeezing it in!

I went to a health seminar yesterday that was about ‘living a healthier life’. A lot of it was information I already knew, but sometimes it’s a nice refresher to learn why it’s important and pick up a few new tricks. The theme of the class was ‘everything in moderation’, and ‘move your body more’. Duh, rocket science, right?

A few easy ways to move more:

  • Whenever you go up or down a flight of stairs, turn around and go up and down again before moving on
  • When you’re on the phone, pace back and forth (Irving does this and easily walks a few extra miles a day (seriously, he wears a pedometer to prove it)!
  • When you’re washing dishes, do leg lifts or calf raises
  • Walk whenever you can!

All that info motivated me, and when I got home from work, I turned around to go for a run! I intended to do a 5K, but when I got back and mapped it, it turned out to only be 2.6 miles. But hey, I moved, right? It felt so great. There were so many people outside last night! Everyone is enjoying the longer days I think.

One thing I learned while running: Green Day has the BEST songs for keeping a steady pace. All their songs have the perfect tempo for my running speed. It keeps me going!

I blame the warmer temps, but it was H-O-T!

Only one thing sounded refreshing:

Shocktop with Fresh Oranges! Delish! (Opened with my new Contiki bottle opener! Sweet!)

We had some baked Ravioli for dinner (another reason why I wanted to run!)

The bunnies guarded my beer. Mmm!

The sunset was GORGEOUS last night. The sky was a bright pink color, so nice!

PS… Those endorphins are TOTALLY kicking in. It feels so good to sweat a little!

Springtime Chicken March 30, 2011

Last night, we cooked up another one of our Dream Dinners meals.

This one was the ‘Chicago Style Chicken’, and it was amazing. So much flavor, and so easy to make. I joke with other healthy food bloggers that I don’t ‘cook’…instead, I ‘assemble’. But I’m darn good at it. Winking smile

I cracked open a bottle of wine (direct from Costco’s shelves). This was a Riesling and it was fabulous.

Enjoyed along side my Easter Bunnies. I wait all year for them to come out and play!

The rest of the night, we did some more office work. I’m converting my entire music library from ITunes to Windows Media Player. It is such a painstakingly long process. We got a home server, where we can access all of our music anywhere in the world… but it all has to be converted first.

(nerds, we know.)

Tell me, what’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Tell me I’m not alone.

An Unusual Backdrop… March 29, 2011

Filed under: Friends — Kelocity @ 10:27 am

Last night, Irving and I came home, cleaned up a bit, did a little grocery shopping and then changed into our PJs. We were fully prepared to zone out in front of our computers and get a little office work done (more on that later!)

Then our friend, Erica texted to see if we were up for going on a neighborhood walk. It was a no-brainer. We changed and headed out the door, and it was pretty awesome. We ended up doing a 3.6 mile stroll around the area, chatting and brainstorming about all kinds of things. We’re so lucky to have so many great friends close by!

At one point, we passed by this big dumpster and for some reason, I thought it would be a cool backdrop for a photo shoot. Might make an unusual backdrop, but I was pretty excited about it. haha (Picture Courtesy of Erica!)

She got a great shot with the dumpster too (with the use of an automatic timer!) Hop over to her site to see it!
