Guest Post: Aunty Loves Adele January 15, 2013

The following is a guest post written by Adele’s Aunties who came to visit us in LA last week. We had so much fun and Adele got totally spoiled with all the hugs and attention. Here’s a recap of their trip!

As Irving’s big sister, I’m also probably his biggest critic. I’ve been complaining about him since the day he entered my life, and I was no longer an only child. But last June, Irving (along with Kelley) did something that made me more proud than any sister could ever be: they brought Adele into our lives.

Now the brother that I couldn’t get rid of as a child has grown up into a husband and father that I wish I got to see more often.
Living more than 2,000 miles away from my little brother and his beautiful family is tough, and I miss them like crazy. Luckily, though, we get to visit a few times a year, and we always make the most of our time together. We met Adele just after she turned two months old, and we got to spend five wonderful days getting to know the little person she’s becoming now that she’s just over seven months old.
Here’s brief recap of the fun things we got to do with Irving, Kelley, and Adele while we were in LA.
Our first priority after a good night’s rest was to get some healthy, nutritious California breakfast. We found these at Crumbs at the Americana. (I didn’t manage to get a picture of the Squiggle cupcake we ordered until after it was mostly gone.)

Later that day, we headed out to get some healthy, nutritious California dinner.

The next day, Irving, Sarah, Adele, and I headed to the Griffith Park Observatory. It was a beautiful day, and we got some great views of the area from up there.
We also got to see some pretty cool exhibits.

Adele took in her first planetarium show:

We’d worked up an appetite by then, so we took Adele for her first experience with Korean food. She only tried the rice, and she wasn’t a huge fan, but she liked the atmosphere.

The next day, our mom came down to visit with all of us. We all got some great belated Christmas presents, but Adele’s were the most fun.
It really is amazing to watch her learn new things right in front of you. Here’s her first attempt with her brand new sippy cup!

On our last morning, we went out for breakfast and one of us tried peaches for the first time:

I swear she liked them, despite how it looks!
My favorite thing from the whole trip, though, was this:

I don’t think there’s anything cuter than a baby holding her own bottle.
Thanks again for showing us such a great time, Irving, Kelley, and Adele. We love you and can’t wait to see you again in May!
Thank you EJ & Sarah!!! Adele is so lucky to have family all over the country who love her so very much. Can’t wait to see you guys again soon!

A Puree Party January 1, 2013

This week was a huge milestone week for Adele. In just a few days, she has outgrown her 3-6 month clothes, started babbling (she says “DADADADA” and “GOOGOOGOO”!!) No ‘mama’ yet though, no fair.

And she also started to try some purees!

We’re still doing Baby Led Weaning, but we have to introduce purees because her daycare won’t do the real food approach. My mom cooked up some butternut squash and I mashed it all up and put it in 1 oz containers. She got new baby spoons for Christmas and I think she was a fan! She had never had squash before but she loved it. (But there isn’t anything she’s tried yet that she didn’t like!)
Christmas Week

If we can’t do real food at daycare, the next best thing is fresh, homemade food. At least we still know exactly what she’s getting that way. Even though she is only 6.5 months old, she still held the spoon on her own and knew exactly what to do with it. We were all impressed.

Grammie was so proud to feed her too.

My family was also amazed at how well behaved she is at the table when we’re eating. We credit that 100% to Baby Led Weaning. She sits patiently and entertains herself while we eat.

Once we feel confident in our purees, we’ll switch back to BLW when we’re with her so she has both each day. (Purees for lunch and real food for dinner).

Anyone else try this hybrid approach? Any suggestions?

Adele’s First Thanksgiving November 30, 2012

Although our Thanksgiving Weekend started with an awful stomach bug that attacked EVERYONE in our house…. we still had a wonderful and relaxing time in San Francisco. In order to maximize family time, we decided to eat out for Thanksgiving. (I think my first time doing that ever!) We went to Black Angus! (That’s one for the baby book, right?) It was actually perfect. Good food. Good company.

Grandma was in heaven. Check out the booties she made!

And Great Grandma Nini also enjoyed celebrating Adele’s first Thanksgiving!

Self Portraits while we waited for our table!

Adele was so good during dinner. She sat in a high chair for the FIRST time!!!! Such a big girl! She LOVED being part of the action. She sat contently for over an hour!

Part of the reason was that it was her first time ever having food! We’re doing the baby-led weaning approach (no purees, no spoons, no rice cereal) so we just handed her some pieces of lettuce, tomato and bread! She only had a few bites of each, but survey says she was impressed!!!

Catch her in action:

We haven’t finished reading the BLW Book yet so we’re holding off on giving her any more food until we have a game plan, but it was fun to share Thanksgiving Dinner with Adele. She’s certainly part of the family and we can tell she’s happy to be here too!
