The Anti-Black Friday… November 29, 2010

We didn’t head out to the stores like the rest of America on Black Friday… But we did relax during the day and then ventured to Costco in the afternoon. (We joked that we are a family of Costco Lovers!)

Irving tried out the new 3D TVs (candid shot!)
IMG_2135

After, we went to Sports Basement and scored an AMAZING deal on sneakers! The exact shoes I run in were $130 marked down to $75! I tried to buy two pairs, but sadly, they only had one left in my size.
IMG_2137

Dinner was another fantastic (and slightly healthier) meal! Roasted Veggies, Salad and Beef.
IMG_2138

IMG_2139

IMG_2140

With Wine of Course!
IMG_2141

~~~~~
Saturday, EJ, Sarah and Mona went down to Monterey and Irving, Julie and I went into a vey rainy San Francisco to see the De Young Museum. It’s such a great museum.
IMG_2146
Check out this Church that was built out of guns and bullets!
IMG_2147
So Interesting!
IMG_2149
We really enjoyed the traveling Post-Impressionist exhibit, but you couldn’t take pictures in there. We saw lots of Van Gogh, Cezzane and Renoir paintings including Van Gogh’s The Bedroom. He actually made three of these paintings and I saw one of them in Amsterdam in 2003!
When we got out of the Museum, the rain had cleared and the city was gorgeous!
IMG_2150
We stopped for lunch at Picante in Berkeley! It was SO yummy! The Watermelon juice was the highlight for sure!
IMG_2155
Northern California is so pretty. It really reminds me of New England!
Stay Tuned for more later as we take a side trip to Point Reyes!
Skiing? In the Desert? November 10, 2010
Originally 10/29/2010…
We saved one of the Dubai Highlights for the last day of our trip:
IMG_1131
Ski Dubai is one of the largest indoor ski slopes in the world. It is inside the Mall of Emirates.
IMG_1246
It’s crazy how it can be 110 degrees outside in the desert, and about 20 degrees inside. It’s so cold inside that you have to bring hat and gloves and they provide you with snow suits to wear!
IMG_1132
How many ski slopes have you seen with an escalator to the ski lift? haha
IMG_1133
Since the slope is inside the mall, you ski past stores and restaurants, it’s so strange!
IMG_1136
The lighting is a little dark inside, it almost feels like skiing at twilight.
IMG_1138
 IMG_1141 IMG_1140
Up the lift we go! (Notice the snow making vents on the wall?)
IMG_1145
IMG_1161
IMG_1150
IMG_1151
IMG_1166
IMG_1192
The conditions were surprisingly good. If it was an outdoor mountain, I’d call them perfect. Not too icy, not too powdery.
IMG_1181
There are two main runs, one is a little crowded with beginners who have likely never seen real snow before. The other side is for “experts”, but all that means is that it’s a little bit steeper. Both were really good runs.
IMG_1210
Halfway down the mountain is a ‘ski lodge’ where you can get snacks and hot chocolate.
IMG_1180
We ordered hot chocolates just for fun. They were probably the most expensive hot chocolates we’ve ever had, but look at this thing!
IMG_1194
It had real whipped cream, cocoa powder, m&m’s and marshmallows!
IMG_1195
We were FREEZING by this point, and it was SOOOO good!
IMG_1198
IMG_1200
We bought a 2 hour lift ticket, and with only two runs, it was more than enough time to enjoy it.
While we were skiing, there was a photographer snapping photos of everyone, and then after you’re done, you go look at them on a screen and you can buy them if you want. We didn’t intend to purchase any, but we went to look anyways. While we were scanning through, Irving pointed a photo and said, “hey, haha, doesn’t that one look like Tom Cruise?” I laughed and said “yea, that does look like him a little”. Well when we got home, we realized it WAS him! He was in Dubai all week while we were there since he was shooting the new Mission Impossible movie!!! We JUST missed him! Crazy!
He even had on the same ski suit we all did!!
After we were finished, we were desperate for some desert heat to warm us up. We headed to the Ibn Battuta Mall via metro. We heard this mall was strange. Even our tour books called it weird and a little quirky. It’s divided up into five sections, each one represents a different country (kind of like Epcot Center?)
IMG_1222
The inside was really decorated, even though the stores inside were just mediocre.
IMG_1225
This one was the “Egypt Section”. haha
IMG_1229
And China!
IMG_1237
This one had a full scale boat inside the food court…
IMG_1241
It was definitely strange, and I’m not sure I’d recommend this mall, but it was pretty funny to look at.
Later that night, we had reservations at the Burj Al Arab. This is supposedly the world’s only 7-star hotel, and the only way to look around the lobby if you’re not staying there is to eat at one of the restaurants.
IMG_1252
When we arrived at the front gate in our taxi, at first they didn’t have our name on their guest list, and we got a little nervous, but one phone call later and they found it. We were in!
IMG_1255 IMG_1165 (2)
Since we arrived early, we spent an hour walking around the hotel grounds, looking at all the fountains and gold plated walls.
 IMG_1134 IMG_1271
IMG_1256
From the front of the hotel, you can see the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Very pretty as the sun was setting.
 IMG_1132 (2)
We wanted to walk on the white sands, but they wouldn’t let us. Apparently you have shell out the $2,000 a night for that privilege.
IMG_1166 (2)
It was just stunning to see the Burj Al Arab up close as the sun set below the gulf.
IMG_1143 (2)
We originally went back and forth deciding on which restaurant inside we should eat at. They have a bunch of different options. In the end, we decided on the “Skyview Bar”.
IMG_1245
The interior really does have gold plated walls. It also has the world’s tallest atrium in the lobby.
IMG_1178 - Copy
Even the floor has some gold on it!
IMG_1278 - Copy
IMG_1276 - Copy
Time for dinner!
IMG_1188 (2) - Copy IMG_1190 (2) - Copy
The Skyview Bar was at the top of the hotel, and we were hoping for some great views of Dubai…but they seated us at an interior table, with not much of a view. I was kind of sad because that was the whole point.
IMG_1283 - Copy
But after asking each of of four waiters, we were finally relocated to a great window seat overlooking the bustling city of Dubai.
IMG_1194 (2)
We ordered two drinks to start. I had a Zartar Mojito! It was a virgin drink muddled with Zartar leaves and ginger. If you have never had Zartar before, you don’t know what you’re missing. Even Irving liked it.
IMG_1285
Then we each ordered some dinner. Irving had the Angus Burger with Fries and I had a Cheese, Tomato and Basin Panini on an Olive Bread. They were both fantastic (and outrageously expensive).
IMG_1287 - Copy
But now we can say we ate on the top of the Burj Al Arab (cross that off the bucket list, right?!)
IMG_1300
It was the perfect way to end our vacation in the United Arab Emirates.
We loved everything about Dubai. Everyone was friendly, polite and hospitable. The city was clean, organized and has so much to offer. We will definitely be back someday.
But now… onto Egypt! Stay tuned for more!
I Run to Be… October 19, 2010
This weekend I flew up to San Francisco to run the Nike Women’s (Half) Marathon for the SIXTH time!! Here was where I ran my first Marathon back in 2005, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Since then, I ran the half five years in a row. It was an excellent race!
Backing up to Saturday… the expo!
 IMG_0220
My flight landed at 7:30a so I got there really early before the lines formed.
IMG_0224
IMG_0219
I wizzed through the bag pickup, got a free massage and collected all the goodies before the crowds even got there.
IMG_0231
IMG_0233
The bag check bags were awesome this year! The race is “going green” so it was a sweet magenta reusable bag!
IMG_0227
I loved the POM photobooth this year! Cheeeese!
2616.pip_2616_0021
The theme at the race this year was “I Run To Be”
IMG_0225
I Run To Be:
IMG_0223
IMG_0226 IMG_0211
I Run To Be…ME!
IMG_0214
And yes, I totally wore my Boston Marathon gear all over the place on Saturday. Woot!
I headed over to Niketown after the expo to look at all the (overpriced) swag. I didn’t buy anything this year, my collection of running clothing is getting a tad bit out of hand as it is. 🙂
IMG_0212
On the wall outside the store, they have everyone’s names posted. I found mine!
IMG_0213
All six? floors of the store were decked out in marathon gear! (But I used self control and walked out).
IMG_0216
Who’s excited to run?!
IMG_0222
After I fully exhausted the expo, I met up with my friend Niki and we went off to explore San Francisco together!
IMG_0250
Lovely sights of the city
IMG_0251   IMG_0255 IMG_0237
We headed towards the Ferry Building to look around.
IMG_0236
Such a cute place inside. I hadn’t been in a few years.
IMG_0239
Later, we relaxed in the hotel that Niki (graciously) offered to share the night before the race.
IMG_0228
Then it was time to find a place to carbo load! We ended up at Olive, which ended up being a nice surprise. It was a really nice restaurant. It was a bar, but we stuck to water!
IMG_0261
Since the name of the place was olive, we got a bunch to share.
IMG_0262
And a few tempura battered ones too (for good measure).
IMG_0264
We split two of their thin crust pizzas (which were AH-MAZING).
IMG_0265
Now… it’s race time! Check back later for the official race recap!
After Linsay’s shower, I spent the rest of the long weekend hanging out with my family and enjoying the beautiful weather.
I was SO excited that Shelby drove out for the weekend too. She’s the proud mama of the adorable Harper.
IMG_0104
I saw her in July, but she’s already grown SO much since then. It’s just crazy how fast they grow!
She got passed around a lot when she came over. Mikaela got to hold her!
IMG_0105
And my dad! (I think he misses little baby girls!)
IMG_0106
Even my cousins wanted to snuggle with her too!
IMG_0116
Thanks for coming over, Shelby! I miss you!
IMG_0114
My grandparents came over for brunch on Sunday. It’s always nice to catch up with them in person.
IMG_0110
So anyone that knows my mom knows that she can’t sit still for three minutes (in a good way!) She always has to be doing something. And when the weather is nice… that means working in the garden!
She made me grab a shovel and till the garden for the spring.
1010001543
Gardening is NOT my forte, but we did a great job!
IMG_0119
One night, I was puttering around looking through some of my old childhood things, and I came across some old floppy drives. I put one in an old computer and the files were STILL there!!! I was SO excited. I thought i lost some of my old stories I wrote (circa 1993) but they were all still there!
It was a story about a Brain Transplant, and for 5th grade, I thought it was pretty good. HAHA It was over 20 pages long!
It’s silly, but I’m glad I found it! PS… how amazing is this orange text? Technology has come a long ways, my friends!
IMG_0120
Monday morning, I met my friends Courtney, Steph and Katie for breakfast at Friendly’s. I hadn’t been to this one since high school! (We used to go after the Football Games I think)!
IMG_0174
Later, we went over to Grammie and Papa’s to enjoy some afternoon sunshine. We picked up some authentic Lebanese treats (Zartar and SimSim)!
IMG_0187
I brought some home with me because I was craving it…big time. I really hope we can find some when we’re in the Middle East. Mmmm!
IMG_0188
And before I jetted off to the airport, we had a family dinner at home.
IMG_0192
Sisters! (We missed you, Laurie!)
 IMG_0190
My dad and I coordinated colors!
IMG_0193
I’ll miss this cutie!
IMG_0206
IMG_0201
These three day getaways are just perfect. Always a little short, but it’s so refreshing. When I go home, my soul gets nourished.
Thank you Christopher Columbus for sailing the ocean blue and giving me three days off to enjoy every drop of it. 🙂
Sunny with a chance of showers!
My oldest friend, Linsay, is getting married in February and this weekend was her surprise bridal shower near Boston. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world so I booked a quick trip back home for Columbus Day weekend so I could celebrate with her and see some family.
It was a GORGEOUS weekend in Boston… warm breeze and sunny skies, the perfect New England fall weather everyone always hopes for. It was just beautiful. I always wonder why people in New England put up with the cold winters… but it was weekends like this that definitely make it worth it.
First thing’s first… Linsay’s shower! There was more food than I’ve ever seen at a single party. And it was all prepared by Linsay’s aunt and mom. It was just amazing. The morning of the big party, everyone pitched in to get everything ready.
Here’s just a sampling of some of the food we had. The theme was “autumn” and everything fell right into place. It was just lovely.
A variety of homemade muffins
IMG_0003
Scones
IMG_0004
A Cheese Ball that was made to look like “logs” and a “pumpkin”. It was GORGEOUS.
IMG_0023 IMG_0024
Her colors are aqua and brown… so these cake bites were PERFECT! (And delicious!)
IMG_0001
My mom made these. They were frosted sugar cookies made to look like bacon and eggs! SO CUTE!
IMG_0002
Tuna Salad stuffed pastries
 IMG_0005
Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits in cute bride and groom shot glasses!
IMG_0009
Mimosas
IMG_0010
Cream Cheese Cups
IMG_0011
Shrimp Cocktail in Shot Glasses
IMG_0012
The highlight (in my opinion) These are Nilla Wafers and chocolate chips that looked like Acorns!!! How AMAZING is this?!
 IMG_0020
A cheese block that looked like a pinecone. (They thought of EVERYTHING!)
IMG_0021
Chocolate dipped spoons (for coffee) with autumn sprinkles. (Funny story, Linsay found one of these TINY sprinkles on the floor a few days before the shower and asked what they were. I think her mom made something up, but close call!)
IMG_0027 IMG_0055
You guys, there was SO much more than this. There were sandwiches, bacon, omlettes, spiral ham, potatoes, casseroles, fruit, desserts, breads, cookies, egg salad sandwiches on crackers…. you name it…it was there!
But enough about the (impressive) food spread… What about the Bride to Be!?
She was incredibly surprised, she really had NO idea!
IMG_0035
IMG_0039
She thought that her brother, his wife, she and her fiance were all going to ‘take couples pictures’ together. And she INSISTED they all wear matching black shirts and tan pants. HAHA luckily they’re  all great sports and did what she asked. It was really funny when they all showed up wearing the same thing though.
They are just adorable (Note: Nolan, her fiance, said he “forgot” his tan pants at his sister’s house, where the shower was) which was ‘why they had to stop there first’. Nice work!
IMG_0045
My mom and Linsay’s mom have been friends for over 20 years!
IMG_0043
Me and my mom!
IMG_0044
The beautiful bride to be and I!
IMG_0046
Boy did she get a lot of gifts!
IMG_0048
She is one lucky girl!
IMG_0081  IMG_0080
Jess did a great job with the ”Rehearsal Boquet’ with all those ribbons!
IMG_0091
Linsay’s amazing friend Tricia (who just got engaged!)
IMG_0057
With me too!
IMG_0059
We played a few fun games including ‘dress up the bride with toilet paper, ribbon and tape.
IMG_0098 IMG_0099 IMG_0096
Look at these beauties!
IMG_0101
It was an incredible shower, they really outdid themselves. Linsay, I can’t wait for your wedding!
Cheers!
