Surf City Half Marathon Recap February 6, 2011

This morning, I ran my 11th half marathon. Add that to my other 3 full marathons and that brings me up to Race # 14 in my quest to run 20 endurance races before I’m 30. I still have three more years, so looks like it will be an easy goal to achieve!

As I said yesterday, I was not really ready to run today. My head was a mess and I woke up pretty tired this morning. Luckily I had everything laid out the night before so I didn’t have to think much this morning.

Last night, one of my friends told me to go out there, thank the volunteers and run because running makes one feel human again. That was really good advice, exactly what I needed.

It took me an hour to drive and park in Huntington Beach. But the parking was easy and free so I can’t really complain. I listened to NPR and tried to ignore the fact that I’d be running 13.1 miles in an hour. Worked like a charm! I met up with my friend Valerie first thing. She picked up my bib yesterday for me. Thank you!!!!
IMG_3396

From her hotel room, we could see the crowds starting to line up along the coast. The sky was overcast, perfect for running.
IMG_3391

I thought it would be chilly by the beach, so I wanted to test out my Asics arm warmers that Santa brought this year!
IMG_3393

I decided at the last minute not to wear them in case it got too hot. I rather be cold than hot.
IMG_3392

I love when races let you customize your bibs. Mine said Kelocity!!
IMG_3394

The corrals were lined up according to pace. It took us a while to find our area. 20,000 runners is a lot of people to weave through!
IMG_3395

We inched closer and closer to the start line. I was in complete denial that I would be running soon. I stretched out a bit and finally it was our turn to go!
IMG_3397

Valerie and I decided to try to run together as long as possible. We settled on 5:5 intervals to make sure we didn’t burn out. The run felt really easy, but I was afraid I’d jinx it if I got too comfortable.
IMG_3398

Valerie is a great running partner. We have the same pace and she always has something motivating to say.
IMG_3399

The miles were flying by. I barely looked at my watch, I felt like I was floating along.
IMG_3400

On paper, the course is pretty boring, just an out and back with one deviation. But I have to say, I LOVED it. It was so simple and everyone was there was enjoying it for what it was. No bands, no gimmicks, no distractions.
IMG_3401

There was an abundance of water stations, which was nice. They also served Vitalyte, but I don’t drink that, so I used my own Cytomax instead. They also had Sharkies at two points on the course, and I declined those too.
IMG_3404

I kept seeing this girl, I loved her shirt. It says “Follow your heart, but run with your soul.” It was fitting for me today. I was there to do something healthy for myself—both physically and mentally.
IMG_3402

Around Mile 7, Valerie and I split off and I turned my IPod on and ran my heart out. I cranked the music really loud and let my mind wander.  I really felt like I was floating along. My legs felt light and strong and I was busting out those miles one by one. No shin splints, no knee pain, no tight hips. It was the type of run you dream about.
IMG_3405

During the last few miles, the sun came out. Normally, I hate running in the heat. (I hate the heat in general, I really don’t belong in Southern California). But today, I just felt the rays on my face and looked at the ocean sparkling next to me. There is a lot in this world to be grateful for.
IMG_3406

Around Mile 11.5, I saw the 2:45 pacer. He was way up ahead of me at one point, and I caught with him and then PASSED him! That’s never happened before!
IMG_3411

The last mile I started to get a little tired. I wanted to walk, but I kept pushing through. I was counting down the minutes in my head. I think I passed five or six people in the last .2 miles. (Sorry if I ruined your finish line photos!)
IMG_3412

Although I was happy to be done, I really felt like I had another three miles in me. I didn’t care to find out for sure though. lol

The finish line area was pretty organized, but it took a while to get through. They gave out goodie bags of snacks (which is nice so you don’t have to carry all your stuff separately.
IMG_3416

They also had a Beer Garden which allowed for two free beers, but that didn’t sound like the best idea at 11am with an hour drive ahead of me!
IMG_3413

The medal is really cute. It’s a surf board!
IMG_3414

I finished in  2:46 which is my second best time ever. Given my attitude going into this race, I am extremely proud of myself. It really does prove that sometimes you just need a good run to make things right in the world again—or at least in my soul.

I spent the rest of the day at a fun superbowl party. There was lots of buffalo chicken dip, guacamole and random other things consumed. It’s safe to say I am no longer in my calorie deficit for the day. #1 reason why I love running.

And since I don’t like football, I took pictures of myself (when I wasn’t eating, obviously!)

It’s only 8pm and I’m already to go to bed. I’m wiped!

I had an amazing run this morning in the Surf City Half Marathon. One of the best races I’ve ever had. Full recap coming after the Superbowl. I didn’t burn 1400 calories this morning for nothing! Bring on the Buffalo Chicken Dip!

The Shin Splint Dilemna! January 28, 2011

Ever since the Phoenix Half Marathon, my hamstrings have been SUPER tight. I’ve been doing the ice, foam roller and stretching, but nothing seems to be working. I thought the yoga the other night would have helped (all those down dogs!) but they actually feel even tighter since the class. What gives?

This morning, I got up to go for a run (I told you I would!) but first, I stretched inside and then did lots of these outside too. I love this stretch. It goes straight down the back of your legs.

You let your foot hang off and press down as you lean forward.

IMG_3200

The run started out pretty good, it felt really good to loosen up a little bit. My hamstrings were already feeling better. But then I started to get twinges in my shins… and then pain…. and then:

IMG_3215

Oh. My. Gosh. DO I HAVE FREAKIN’ SHIN SPLINTS AGAIN? I am paranoid about those because EVERY single time I start training again, I get them. And they don’t go away easily. I’ve had to deal with them since my High School field hockey days. I last had them while training for Boston, and the only thing that cured them was resting for a solid month. Every block or so, I stopped to stretch out some more. (Sometimes shin splints can be caused by tight calf muscles).

Here’s what I think happened:

  • I ran the Phoenix Half without much training, which left me more sore than usual
  • After the race, my muscles tightened up (especially my hamstrings)
  • When I started running consistently after the race, my calves tightened up to alleviate my hamstrings a little bit.
  • I did a lot of sprints last week, and that always messes up my shins. How am I supposed to get faster and fitter if I can’t sprint?!

So then I got to thinking, no one really likes a whiny running blogger, so I have to nip this thing in the butt and figure out what’s really going on mechanically with my legs and find a long term solution.

IMG_3226

It’s not brain science, I know what I need to do:

  • Ice every night
  • Stretch every morning and every night (even when I don’t feel tight)
  • Foam Roll the tight areas every night
  • Get a massage to flush out the knots (this worked really well before Boston)
  • Do more weight training/squats/lunges to strengthen my legs

IMG_3227

Also, I know that Advil isn’t that healthy for runners, but I really feel like I need it. Thoughts?

PS. How funny is this? I saw this in someone’s yard today. So cute!

After a frustrating run, and finding motivation to garner a solution, I enjoyed some breakfast cookie oatmeal: Oats, Banana, Chocolate Protein Powder, Peanut Butter and Coconut.

IMG_3234

Nothing like a blood sugar stabilizing breakfast. I buy the Trader Joes Chocolate Whey protein, and it seriously keeps me full for almost five hours!
IMG_3236

There’s talk of a trip to Menchie’s today after lunch! Happy Friday!

Tomorrow is the big Celebrity Fitness Workout session with Kathy Kaehler! I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures!

5 Mile Sunrise Run January 23, 2011

This morning, I met my group, the Los Angeles Racers at Balboa Park for a run.

The guys are an amazing group of runners. Couldn’t ask for a better group.
CIMG0114

I ran the five mile loop with my friend, Valerie (we met in an Italian class a few years ago!)
CIMG0108

My legs are totally fried. After not really training, running a half-marathon and taking a tread and tone class, my lower body is totally beat up. I’ve been stretching, but it felt nice to give them a good jog to loosen them up a bit. I was still sore after, but not nearly as stiff. It took us about three miles to find our stride, but it was a great run. ((Zensah Running sleeves = still a success!))

For lunch today, Irving and I decided to do a ‘dinner for lunch’ theme. We never have big weekend lunches, and it was nice to cook during the day for a change.

We cut up chicken and added a spice rub to it and grilled it to perfection.
IMG_3169 IMG_3170

On the side, we roasted some vegetables in the oven (potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic and rosemary).
IMG_3173

What a great, filling and healthy lunch! (I’m taking half of this to work for lunch tomorrow!)
IMG_3174

I am almost done reading Meb Keflezighi’s book, and he keeps talking about the importance of icing after a long run. I knew my sore legs could really use an ice bath, so I gave in.
IMG_3177

I filled the tub halfway with cold water, and dumped my entire freezer drawer of ice into it. The key is to keep your upper body warm (hooded sweatshirt is a MUST!) I could only sit in it for three minutes or so, but it was like magic. My muscles feel 10 times better tonight. Definitely worth braving the cold.

Winner of the Celebrity Fitness Giveaway will be announced tonight!

Tonight, I joined a friend at Pulse Fitness for one of their Tread and Tone classes.
IMG00037-20110121-1729

It’s a pretty awesome studio, they have cool decorations all around that totally pump you up.

IMG00040-20110121-1732

Fitness needs a little glam sometimes, right?
IMG00039-20110121-1732

The décor is pretty swanky and chic, even in the bathroom!
IMG00041-20110121-1734

Inside, you feel like you’re working out inside of a lava lamp. It’s a little dark, and the lights feel more like a nightclub than a gym.
IMG00042-20110121-1734

Before the class, I had a Coconut Larabar (my favorite!)
IMG00035-20110121-1718

The class was an hour long, but it flew by. We did 10 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes of weights and so on for an hour. I ended up running almost three miles when all was said and done. It was hard! There were lots of sprints and inclines. I did my best, but I couldn’t really keep up.

I almost felt like the class was so hard, it was anti-productive. Obviously I got a great workout, but it was so hard, I quit a few times and just stood there. But I’m pretty sure I’ll still be sore tomorrow anyways. It’s good to switch it up once in a while.

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway to win a workout session with Celebrity Trainer Kathy Kaehler! You have til Monday morning!
