Skydiving in the Swiss Alps!! March 9, 2003

I just had one of the best weekends of my life. We went to Interlaken, Switzerland!

We got there Friday night and we got dinner and went to our hostel: The Funny Farm. It was such a great hostel. It was more like a real hotel than a hostel. Our private room had a balcony that overlooked the alps, it was nearly breathtaking. I couldn’t believe I was actually there. My mom told me Switzerland really was the best place in Europe and I have to say that I agree. I have never seen mountains like these. There are so many of them, and they are so jagged. We took the train right through the valleys on our way there, it felt like we were going right into them. The air was so crisp and the sun was shining. We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend for it.

So beautiful!

Saturday, March 8th was one of the best days of my life. I say this with complete truth. We went SKYDIVING! Yes, little Kelley jumped out of a plane two miles up in the air. There were six of us that did it: my friends, Liz, Melissa, Dara, Emily and Courtney. It was a little expensive, but well worth it. If I was going to skydive once in my life, it sure as hell was going to be in the Alps. We had a training session where we learned how to fall out of the plane. They said, “Tilt your head back and try to kick my butt”. That’s how you fall out of a plane. There were other people there, and we waited three hours in the airline hanger for our turn. The runway was also our drop zone.

And getting Hotter!

The plane took 8 people up at a time (4 jumpers with 4 tandem masters). I went up around 3pm, the sun was at a perfect height, just setting a little below the mountain peaks. We all got into a small plane. I went with Courtney, Dara and Emily on my flight up. The plane circled around Interlaken and around the Alps for a while.

I took some pictures from the plane. I was connected to my tandem master on the plane. I bought the video of my jump, I wanted to make sure I had evidence of this. The video guy was also in the plane. When we got to about 5,000 feet up, I said, “Is this where we are jumping from?” and the guy laughed and goes, “No, we aren’t even half way there yet”. So at 14,000 feet, they opened up the plane door. This is when it hit me that I was supposed to jump out. It didn’t seem real. I was like, doors aren’t supposed to open that high up, what the hell am I doing? Emily was closest to the door, and her and her tandem guy just leaned over and fell out. I started screaming hysterically. I think my body went into shock, I just saw her fall and I panicked. Then some kid, going solo, just got up and jumped out. I thought, well, he makes it look so easy! I knew I was next. He made me get up and put my feet over the edge. The camera guy was already out, holding onto the side of the plane. The next few moments were a blur, but I remember looking at the camera guy and just tumbling. I think I did a somersault in the air. And then I was just floating. I didn’t feel like I was falling, although I really was—at 120mph. The camera guy was in front of me, we were facing each other. We reached out and held hands in the air. I remember holding my arms out like I was flying. Then I was jolted up a bit and I realized that he had pulled the parachute. I looked up and saw that it was purple. He helped me move my harness down a bit and I was now sitting upright. I unzipped my jumpsuit and got my camera out and took tons of pictures.

Every minute felt like it lasted for hours, and yet, at the same time, it felt like time was going by at double speed. It was so weird. I was literally above the Alps looking down at them. About 6 minutes later we were coming down to the landing zone and I was caught on the ground by one of the guys. It was such a graceful landing, we just sat down and that was it. It was the best experience of my life.

Castle Midterms March 5, 2003

Ok, midterms are the most evil thing in the world. I have been going insane this week trying to make sure I know everything. I had my Intercultural Communication midterm yesterday and one of my answers was: “I think I know this answer, it begins with a C, but I can not think of it right now… do you give partial credit?” Well, we will see about that… but in the middle of our test, a parade came right through the Castle gates and into the courtyard…like a tractor pulling a float and there was a band that was playing Dutch music and everything. It was so strange, but hey, I guess during Carnivale, anything goes. Then I had my Renaissance class and in the middle of that class, fireworks went off. Luckily, my teacher let us have a break so we could watch them. They were ordinary fireworks, but the Dutch just made them seem so much better. Right now, I am off to go for a run…. I’ve been good and I’ve been going pretty consistently. The weather is just amazing.

Carnivale Wrap Up! March 2, 2003

Well Carnival is in full swing. Last night was amazing. We all went to the Linden for the big costume party. The guys were all dressed up as kings and princes and the women had all sorts of weird costumes. Everyone was drunk, it was so funny. I had on my cute little backless shirt I just bought in Venlo. Some Emerson kids came dressed up in various costumes: a pirate, an Indian, police man… They had a live band that played pretty much every kind of music. They played traditional Dutch music, that I am now addicted to, and they played awesome techno music, and then they played stuff like Elvis Presley and other classic American music. so funny how they become so fond of American music. We danced pretty much all night; it was such a great time.

Today was the parade. It was, oh my god, the BEST parade I’ve ever seen. It lasted an hour and half, it was so long. It’s weird because the town is so small, I don’t know how there was anyone to actually watch the parade because everyone in the town was in it. There were so many floats, they had different themes: 70s retro, the queen of hearts, the police and a bunch of other stuff. It was scary, the police float threw fake grenades at the crowd and they smoked, and it was scary, all the Americans were like, “umm…. Why are they throwing grenades at us?” There was a Harry Potter theme float too. The other really big part of this parade was, surprise, surprise: alcohol. Everyone in the parade was drinking on the floats. And they don’t throw candy at the crowd, they throw alcohol. They were throwing individual shots in little bottles at us, I got an apple shot that I gave to Kevin. One float was giving away full cans of Heineken. I think the whole theory behind carnival is that you get really drunk all weekend, up until Fat Tuesday and then you fast for 40 days. So everyone will be partying tonight too. I have to study for midterms. This is the absolute worst weekend to do so, no one wants to study, there are so many parties going on. Its crazy.

Carnivale!! March 1, 2003

I can’t believe its March already! It really feels like the middle of may, still! The first night of Carnival was so much fun. I went with Emily, Courtney and Liz. Emily and I had our little crowns on, and Liz and Courtney dressed up as men. We were the only Emerson kids at the Vink for two hours. This was very nice because the locals found it fun to teach us about their customs and about their traditions. They were amazed that we don’t have Carnival in America. It was all women at the Vink. I was told that it was a celebration of the 1900s when women were given the right to enter a bar. All the women were dressed as they would have been in the 1900s, it was really cute. Around 11pm, the “kings” of this year’s carnival came, and they danced to Dutch music. They taught us some dances. They also were really big into conga lines, and they kept pulling us into them. It was great! They had Dutch food, that they insisted we try, and it was really good, even though I have no idea what it was! When the Vink started to fill up with all Emerson kids, I left, and came back to the Castle to watch “Pretty Woman”. Good Times.

I went to Venlo and booked my Eurail tickets for Switzerland. It took me like an hour and a half to finally get them. Apparently, next weekend is vacation week and everyone is going to Switzerland. But I got them. Then I walked around and shopped for a bit. I got really excited about clubbing sometime, so I bought club clothes that I’m probably never going to wear, but they were cute, so I bought them anyways.

Castle, Carnival… and Mr. Rogers February 27, 2003

Ok: Mr. Roger’s died today. How sad is that? That is soooo depressing. I think God wanted to honor him today by making it a “Sunny day in the Neighborhood”. It was beautiful today…. 59 degrees to be exact… with no breeze at all. I actually had a short sleeve shirt on, and I was still warm, it was the greatest thing ever. I went for a long walk with Whitney today, that was a lot of fun. We went grocery shopping for the weekend.

Anyways, all that aside… I look really hot right now. LOL It is the first night of Carnival, and I’m sooo excited. I have my little gold sparkly shirt on and my new black pants that I got in Cologne, Germany. And, the best part: Emily went out and got crowns for us to wear to the bar tonight. I have my gold crown on and I’m prancing around in my castle… I am a princess for real tonight!!! At the Vink, its ladies night and the guys can only get in if they dress up as women. I’m really excited for this. I plan on being out, all night. More updates tomorrow! Ciao!
