My Little Baker February 10, 2014

On Saturday, determined to squeeze the juice out of my weekend time with Adele, I decided to try baking with her. She’s baked once before with Grammie, but I hadn’t tried it yet. I honestly didn’t think she’d be interested or have the attention span longer than a few minutes… but I was wrong!

She loved it! She paid attention to what I was doing, what was next, and was eager to help! It was so fun!

I prepared everything super fast and ran through the recipe quick to keep her attention (though I realized after I probably could have taken my time a bit more). In my rush, I kind of messed up the recipe, but in the end, it all worked out! They were DELICIOUS!

Adele’s favorite part was placing a few additional M&Ms on the cookies before they went into the oven. She had great technique (one in the cookie, two in her mouth!) I think that was her first taste of M&Ms. Her whole face lit up when she realized how yummy they were!

I think her teachers loved the Valentine’s Day treats! They were made with love! (Even if I did accidentally chop up some of the M&Ms in the mixer — oops!)IMG_4255

Sunday Funday: Pasadena and Hollywood February 6, 2014

Last Sunday, we had a rare day off together as a family, so we made the most of it and headed out in search of adventure. We meandered over to Pasadena with no real plans in mind. We found a great playground near Colorado Blvd and stopped to play for a bit!

Then we stretched our legs and went for a walk.

Look! Leaves! Los Angeles finally got its FALL! (A few months late, but there are leaves! We celebrated!)

We made our way over to our favorite travel store (Distant Lands) and picked up another Eagle Creek travel cube. We could have spent all day in there. The maps! The books! The suitcases! It makes us giddy. We may or may not have a pretty exciting international trip up our sleeves.

Anyways, we left Pasadena and headed over to Hollywood for the rest of the day. We live SO close, but since it’s not exactly the cleanest place in the world, we don’t spend all that much time there. But on that day, it was perfect. I strapped Adele to me in the carrier, and within one block on Hollywood Boulevard, she was passed out!

I know my days of having my baby sleep on me are numbered, so I soaked up every minute of this glorious nap.

She slept long enough for us to walk a couple of miles (and pick up Book of Mormon tickets on the way!!!!) and STILL have enough time to spare for us to sit down at a restaurant (Pig & Whsitle, for you locals!) and eat lunch! (Yes, I was careful not to get crumbs in her hair. haha) She woke up just as we were wrapping up there. We sat and gave her lunch for a little bit and continued over to Hollywood & Highland.

Our last stop was a visit to Sweet, an enormous candy store. Irving had bought me a gift certificate to make my own candy bar there! It was better than we thought it would be! And fun too!

My bar had a dark chocolate base and was filled with peanut butter, mini m&ms, Rice Krispies and crushed Oreos.

Irving’s had a milk chocolate base, filled with nutella, ground coffee, banana chips and sea salt.

So to recap: playground, travel store, baby nap, quiet lunch with hubby… and chocolate. Yep. Perfect day.

Our Beautiful, Messy Life February 1, 2014

Whether we’re in our house for an hour or a whole day, after Adele goes to bed, we look around and see that our entire place is upside down. We’ve completely given up on cleaning throughout the day because it’s a futile waste of energy. I longingly remember back to the days when ‘infant Adele’ would be entertained by a single toy, book or a chain of plastic rings. I now spend 1-2 hours every single day tidying everything up. It’s exhausting. But to us, a clean house means a clear mind… and at this point, I need all the sanity I can get.

Here’s some ‘Before & After’ photos of our house this week…well really it’s like “Before & After & Before” because it is an endless cycle of Elmo, spilled milk, strawberries crushed into the rug, random Mrs. Potatohead pieces all over, emptied out toy bins and miscellaneous tupperware spread out everywhere. Welcome to our beautiful life:

Random Friday Musings… January 31, 2014

Filed under: Random — Kelocity @ 3:44 pm

1.) My Gmail/Google account was at 98% capacity last week… I started deleting emails, attachments and duplicate photos like crazy until I somehow got down to 54%! It was sorta exhilarating to clear out over six gigs of unnecessary digital junk! (Side note: I was deleting things so fast that Google suspended my account for an hour thinking it was fraudulent activity. ha!)

2.) On a similar note, Irving and I are on a mission to unsubscribe to some of the enewsletters we get in our inbox each morning. Two of them were Babies R Us and The Bump. I can’t believe there is really nothing we need at Babies R Us anymore?!

3.) I forgot to tell you about my Downton Abbey viewing party I had a few weeks ago for the Season Premiere! It was fun! A bunch of us girls got together, dined on mini tea sandwiches and mourned the loss of Matthew (whyyy, Matthew???) It was a blast! (By the way, how awesome is this season?!)

4.) I’m so excited it’s almost Olympic time again!!!! I LOOOOOVE the Olympics! Have you read about #TeamPaul? You should. It’s awesome. His story reminds me of what I think the Olympics should be about. No big corporate sponsorships, no endorsement deals. Just watching the human body and spirit try to accomplish great things. Good for him!

Ditching the Pacifier January 30, 2014

Filed under: Baby — Kelocity @ 3:19 pm

We introduced the pacifier to Adele somewhere around three months old. I started giving it to her when it was time to sleep so she could start associating it with sleep. At the time, I was still rocking her to sleep every night and I was desperate to find a way to stop. The pacifier worked and almost right away she was falling asleep on her own easily and staying asleep for 12-14 hours a night. Pacifier success.

Fast forward to sixteen months (October 2013), I thought it was finally time to start to wean her off of it. I posted this message on my Facebook page:

Screen Shot 2014-01-30 at 2.50.20 PM

Spoiler Alert… after 20 minutes of crying (both Adele and maybe me a little bit too!) I caved and went into her room and gave it back to her. It’s not that I had a moment of mommy weakness (ok, maybe a little), but I really just didn’t feel like it was time yet. It didn’t seem right. I’ve heard that it’s best to get rid of the paci before it becomes a power struggle and I knew that meant I had to do it soon. I was traveling alone with her for Christmas, so I knew I needed it for MY sanity for the flight, so I decided to shelve the idea for a little while.

Instead, we started only giving it to her when it was time to sleep. If she wanted it, she had to go into the crib with it. When she woke up, she knew she had to take it out and leave it there. We also used it in the car when we wanted her to take a car nap.

Then last week, we had a rough day, and I decided it couldn’t get any worse, and on a whim, without much thought, I put her to bed sans pacifier. She cried for five minutes and fell asleep. We let Daycare know that we nixed it at home, and they were on board as well that very same day. The next night, same thing, protested for a few minutes, and then conked out. I was feeling pre-tty proud of myself. Wasn’t so bad after all!

Each night since then, she’s cried for 5-20 minutes or so. I think she still remembers it and wants it back. She called it “fire” (short for ‘pacifier’) and she still asks for it once in a while. It does make me sad because I know in her head she doesn’t understand. All she knows is this little thing felt good, made her sleepy, and was always there when she needed it… and now it’s gone. We didn’t do the whole “Pacifier Fairy came and took away to give it to the new babies” rational. I think she’s too young to get that anyways. It just disappeared (shhh don’t tell her i still have them all in the top drawer in the kitchen! Can’t bring myself to throw them out juuuust yet.)

She’s still sleeping through the night without it, although I will say she’s now waking up earlier. I think before, she’d wake up, find the paci in her crib, and then pass out again for another hour. Now, when she wakes up, she’s up. So now she’s out of bed at 7:15ish instead of her usual 7:45 or so wakeup (I know, I know, that’s not even early, but we did notice the shift once the pacifier was gone).

We’re hopeful that in a few more days there will be less tears at bedtime. Even though it only lasts 10 minutes or so, it’s so heartbreaking to listen to.

I don’t regret at all that we introduced it to her early. It gave us almost two years of quiet, easy sleep. I don’t think any new mom would argue with that! But the other side is deciding how to get rid of it later on. I just waited til it felt right, we’re still very happy with our decision.

I know there will be many, many more parental battles to fight down the road… I’m soooooo not looking forward to these difficult toddler years ahead. But knowing we can (and will) do a good job at each obstacle one at a time is encouraging.
