Happy Fourth! July 4, 2011

We really didn’t do anything to celebrate the 4th today. Part of me kind of wished we had elaborate plans to kayak somewhere, or bbq with friends, or cozied up to watch fireworks on a summery patch of grass near a river…. but this year, we were content relaxing and enjoying the day uneventfully at home.

A few weeks ago, I bought us matching patriotic shirts and I told asked Irving if we could be twinsies!

I slept til almost 9 this morning, and spent the rest of the day reading Eclipse (Yep, I finished New Moon at 1:30am on Saturday night!) This time, I downloaded it as an ebook to the kindle app on my phone. I wasn’t sure if it would be too small or too annoying on such a small screen, but I’m totally engrossed with it and it’s working out great!

Other than a quick excursion to Best Buy and Trader Joes, we didn’t leave the house. Irving played his new FIFA World Cup xbox game and I did a bit of scrapbooking and more reading.

Once it got dark, I went up to our roof to watch some fireworks. One of the perks of living in “the valley” is being able to see so many fireworks displays close by. I had SIX shows to watch all the way around! But the best ones were the illegal ones being blasted off in a parking lot right behind my building. I’m pretty sure that’s illegal and probably dangerous though!

Even though we love to travel the world, I know that we are both happy and proud to call America our home.

Happy Independence Day!

Did any of you watch fireworks from a grassy knoll or BBQ on the beach?

Yesterday morning, I woke up bright and early at 7am. I could see the sun and hear the birds chirping outside. I love being in the bay area. After some breakfast, we headed to our first stop of the day: Sports Basement.
IMG_6271

I love this store. It seems that every time we are here, we stop and buy some new shoes. And this weekend was no exception. They just have the best selection and prices, you can’t beat it. I really loved my Brooks Ariels, but they changed the model this year and they didn’t feel right. They also jacked the price up to $115 and since I’m not really running munch anymore, I just couldn’t justify it.

But I did find the Asics GT-2130s on sale for $65! I used to run in these before switching to Brooks a few years back. They felt great too. Irving ended up with the same pair (in mens of course).
IMG_6273

Happy with our new purchases, we jumped over to a local farmers market. It was small, but very impressive. A little bit of everything and all the produce looked really good. My goal for the day? Find a fresh tomato. There’s nothing like a fresh one, remember? When I found one, I ate it like an apple. Hit the spot.

We came back to Irving’s mom’s house and had a nice lunch and took a nap! Irving slept for two hours! I read New Moon for a while and then fell asleep myself.

Bad news: I started to get a headache and I was so frustrated. I hadn’t eaten sugar in almost a week, hardly any sodium…PLUS I’d been drinking more water than I ever have in my life….why did I have a headache? After a cup of tea and a nap, I realized it must have been caffeine withdrawal today.

Anyways, the tea cured it and when everyone woke up, we got out of the heat by heading to a mall. I scored a summer dress at Old Navy!
IMG_6278

Then we drove over the hill to Berkeley for dinner. Our destination was Pyramid Brewery (one of our favorites!)
IMG_6281

Irving and his mom ordered the Apricot Ale. I’ve had it before and it’s pretty incredible, but I didn’t want to drink for fear of the revenge of the headache. I stuck to water.

The menu is amazing. We think it’s some of the best American food menus out there. I ended up with a turkey club sandwich on a cibatta roll with avocado.
IMG_6284

And I subbed my french fries for a baked mac & cheese!! It came with bacon inside of it and I sprinkled hot sauce on the top!
IMG_6282

I ate a few bites before getting full, and I brought the rest home. I can’t wait to dig into it!!!

This morning, Irving and his mom went to watch the Wimbledon finals in theaters! They’re broadcasting it in 3D! It sounded really fun, but they had to wake up at 4:45am to make it in time!

This List is Bananas!

We are up to San Francisco this weekend to see some family and escape the Los Angeles Heat (Rumor has it that it was supposed to be 110* there this weekend!!) But before we left LA, I had a schwaggle of errands to run first.

IMG_6249
PS…how does ‘bananas’ end up on my to do list. LOL If you’re wondering, I had to freeze some ripe bananas for smoothies this week.

Let’s see…. have lunch, put some receipts into Quicken, Pack for the weekend…. next up… bring all of our paper, cans and bottles to the recycling center. When it’s 92 degrees, it’s not fun being around sweltering trash piles and heaving box of newspapers into bins. But at least I am saving the environment… and I got paid a whopping $1.90 for my cans. I really wish my condo had recycling, because it’s borderline not worth it to even bother.
IMG_6248

Next up (ahead of schedule thankyouverymuch) was Costco to fill up my car for the 6-hour drive.
IMG_6250

Done and done. Then I went to Target to pick up a few things.
(What? Your target doesn’t have a palm tree out front?
IMG_6251

After that, I hit up Citibank quickly. And then snuck a quick trip to Trader Joes for some road trip essentials.
IMG_6253

I swung by and picked Irving up and we hit the road! We were expecting lots of holiday traffic, but it really wasn’t that bad. A couple of hours in, we broke out some homemade sandwiches (turkey and cheese on pretzel rolls!)
IMG_6256

We chatted so much that I forgot I was even driving. Soon enough, we were already at Harris Ranch (our favorite stop half way there!)

IMG_6257

When we got back on the road, Irving took over the driving and we broke out the pop chips! (Salt & Pepper flavor! Full review coming soon!)

We arrived at 11pm and went to bed soon after.

What are your holiday plans this weekend?

Workin’ It Out Together June 30, 2011

Yesterday, Irving and I both got home at the same time and decided to jump right into a sweaty weight lifting session. He worked out with his xbox trainer and I did a routine along side him. I’m so excited that we can work out together. I waited 10 years for this! All it took was an xbox?!
IMG_6241

Before we started, Irving tried the Prime Bar (The first part of the Gatorade GFit Series).
IMG_6001

I tasted it, but honestly, didn’t really like it. They have a few different flavors and I’d be willing to maybe try one of the others. But he really liked it and it pumped him up for a workout.
IMG_6239

I loosely followed this plan from How Sweet it Is. <—If you click over, how good does that cupcake look? OMG.

Irving was hogging the weights so I skipped those ones during the circuit. When he was done, I did a mini upper body routine that included triceps, biceps, shoulder press and lateral raises. Oh man, did I need this!

Warning: Sweaty picture ahead. Whoop!
IMG_6247

They say a couple who works out together stays together, right?
IMG_6240

I slept so well last night and today, my whole body feels like jello. =)

Superior Donuts at the Geffen June 29, 2011

My friend Chely scored some free tickets to the Geffen Theater in a fundraising raffle last year. I was thrilled when she invited me to be her guest for a show last night. I don’t go to the theater nearly as often as I should and it was a great excuse for a night on the town.
IMG_6228

We had a communication mixup and I was parked in front of her house, and Chely was parked in front of my house. We kept telling each other “I’m out front” “Me too” “Where are you?” “Right in front!” Oops. We laughed about it later, too funny. We finally met up and headed over to the theater.
IMG_6229

The Geffen is really beautiful. It’s an intimate theater with all the right touches.
IMG_6230

With our tickets, we also had entrance into the Founder’s Room, a VIP area to hang out before the show. That’s how we roll!
IMG_6232

IMG_6231IMG_6233

I know, I had the opportunity to snag a free MINT CHOCOLATE Clif Builders bar or a cookie and I didn’t take it. Day 3 of eliminating sugar. And you know what? I’m not even really missing it yet.

IMG_6234

There weren’t too many people in the room with us, but everyone else was fairly older. I love people watching. I think it’s so cute to see older couples get all dolled up to see a show together. The men wear their suit coats, and the women put on their lipstick. It’s so beautiful.

I also noticed that old people LOVE Hershey Kisses. LOVE them! They’d sneak over, and grab a whole handful. One woman winked at me and said “I took 7. One for every day of the week”. So cute. When I’m old, I hope I can enjoy life’s simple pleasures with such enthusiasm too. If you pay attention, you really can learn a lot from the older generations.
IMG_6235

The play was Superior Donuts and it was just amazing. It starred Gary Cole, who I know from Entourage, but he’s been a bunch of other things. Also starring was Kathryn Joosten (known for her role as Mrs. McClusky on Desperate Housewives) and Edi Gathegi (OMG, he plays Laurent in Twilight!!!!!!!!!)
superior

It was witty, funny, emotional and brilliantly written. I loved it from start to finish. The set was very impressive and the way the used the space was really smart. I laughed out loud several times. I have to say this was probably the best play I’ve ever seen in LA.
IMG_6236

We had great seats, but behind us was a group of kids on a field trip(?) that were quite loud. The play was riddled with cuss words, adult jokes and (a little) bit of violence, so I was surprised to see so many kids there. But regardless, I think it’s great that they enjoyed the show. I just wish someone would have schooled them in theater etiquette before hand. See, I fit right in with the old people. I’m probably more cranky than they are. ha!

If you’re in the LA area, definitely check out this play before its run is over. You have another week or so. It is definitely worth it.
