Choo Choo! The Healthy Train! May 24, 2011

Remember the time I worked out with a trainer and lost 20 pounds before my wedding? Remember I used to count calories, drink protein shakes and go for daily runs? That healthy lifestyle now feels like a distant memory to me now. What Happened? Marriage happened! A life of gluttonous eating, world traveling and a profound contentness happened. And all my healthy habits vanished with my single-dom.

Last week, at a blogger event, the girls asked me when my “tipping point” was for healthy living. I kinda stared back dumbfounded. I said that I really haven’t hit my tipping point yet. But that’s kind of a lame excuse. I’m not living healthy because I haven’t had a turning point yet. What? The turning point is NOW. Right here. This is my tipping point.

Well, can you hear that? The rumbling in the distance? The fluttering of birds overhead? The faint choo-choo-ing of an on-coming train? It’s the healthy train, and I’m jumping aboard. For real this time. I’m going to DO this. And I have a plan.

  • I now have a healthy living coach who made a plan for me, and will call monthly to check in and make sure I’m on track for reaching my goals.
  • At least 30 minutes of cardio most days. I told her realistically, I will aim for 6 days a week. 30 minutes isn’t that hard.
  • When I get my pedometer, I’m aiming for at least 10,000 steps per day (about 5 miles)
  • Begin a real strength training plan, starting at once a week until the soreness wears off.
  • Eat more whole foods and less packaged, processed and frozen things

I am inspired daily by the blogs and articles I read. And it’s time to act on that inspiration. I will be charting my activity daily on the blog!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner tonight consisted of whole foods! I am very aware of the lack of protein in this meal. That is definitely something I’m working on nutritionally.
First up, I cut up some cute little potatoes:
And tossed them in a bag with some olive oil, parsley, dill and some other stuff:
What’s the “other stuff”? A little of this and a little of that:
I also roasted some Trader Joes asparagas with lemon pepper:
Served with a side of spinach with a drizzle of honey:
Not bad for day one of the “let’s not eat crap for dinner” campaign, no?
Keep the inspiration coming!
Operation Beautiful: Spreading the Smiles
I was tagged by Katherine at LeftCoastContessa.com to do a post about Operation Beautiful. Operation Beautiful is a campaign about “transforming the way you see yourself one post-it note at a time”.
Here are the rules of today’s post!
1. Smile!
I always smile! There is always something worth smiling about.
2. Write 3 things you like about your looks.
This feels a little silly to talk vainly about “my looks”. But in the spirit of operation beautiful, here we go:
1.) My hair when it’s blow dried. I usually wear my hair up, but I do like how it looks when I take the time to blow it straight.
2.) My triceps when they’re toned. It’s one of the easiest muscles to see results in, and when I work at them a little bit, they give me instant gratification that lifting weights is worth it.
3.) My smile. I come from a family of dentists, and we take pride in teeth. A few of my teeth have moved since I had braces, and someday I’d like to correct it, but I still love it, even with its imperfections.
3. Write 3 things you appreciate about your personality.
1.) My eagerness to make friends. I sometimes feel awkward in groups, and worry in my head that I’m saying something dumb, but I still have confidence to go out there and meet new friends. The hard part is deciding to do it.
2.) My thick skin. For the most part, I’m able to brush things off, and take life with a grain of salt.
3.) My Boston accent. It fades a little since I live in California now, but when I get excited, passionate or mad about something, it comes out and I love it. 🙂 It’s a piece of who I am!
4. Write about something you find beautiful in other people (looks, personality – whatever)
I love when you see people recognize their passion, grab hold of their dreams and set off to achieve them. It’s inspiring to see other people succeed. I am also seeing the beauty of watching my friends become parents lately. If that’s not inspiring, I don’t know what is!
5. Award as many other people as you like and let them know!
I’m tagging Erica and Sarah! Take it away!
Whoo Hoo! A Fun Challenge Day!
30-Day-Challenge2_thumb_thumb
Ok, here we go! 30 Interesting Facts About Myself! Buckle Up!
I’m going to break this up into TWO posts. Here’s Round 1!
  1. I got cancer when I was 16 and I got to do the “Make-A-Wish” program! My wish was to go to Los Angeles and visit the set of Roswell. It was my favorite show at the time and my family and I got to meet the whole cast and hang out with the crew! It was an amazing trip and ever since then I knew I’d live in LA someday!
    Kelley Baby Pictures  (157)
  2. My first car was a 1989 Honda Accord. It had a sun roof and I LOVED it! A lot of good memories in that car (including blasting the heat on a 90 degree day on the way to the beach to make sure the engine didn’t overheat!)
  3. When I was in 5th grade, I got to visit City Hall. I met a city council woman and after being introduced, I asked her if there was any way she could get my street paved so I could ride my bike without running over pot holes. The whole neighborhood got redone within a month!
  4. I LOVED the movie Kill Bill when it came out and I saw it three times in the theater in the same week.
  5. Even though I’m only 28, I have bunions on both of my feet!
  6. I’ve never broken a bone.
  7. I lived in The Netherlands for four months in college and stayed in a 12th century castle.
  8. I played field hockey for three years in High School. I played the sweeper position.
    Kelley Baby Pictures  (98)
  9. I ran a half marathon through the park, but I’ve never actually been to Disneyland!
  10. My freshman year of college, I lived in a quad. Four walls, four girls. It was rough.
  11. I skydived over the Swiss Alps in 2003.
    me and my tandem
  12. When Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet came out, I was OBSESSED with the movie. I saw it in theaters and bought the screenplay. We didn’t have HBO or Pay Per View, but I’d sit and listen to the movie on repeat when it was on even though the video was scrambled.
  13. I’d take vanilla over chocolate ANY day.
  14. I had pierced my upper ear three times. 1.) My friend did it himself 2.) In Rhodes, Greece 3.) Professionally at the mall. I also had my belly button pierced for a year in college, but that didn’t last long.
  15. I was in the Computer Club in 5th grade and in the Rocket Club in 6th grade  (I used to build and launch my own rockets!). I’m pretty sure I was the only girl in both.
Stay tuned for Round II. Anything you want to know?
Eagle Rock Brewery: Girl’s Night May 18, 2011
Ok, I admit. Having a post about going to a brewery slightly contradicts my “I don’t really drink” post a few days ago. But like I said, I don’t need to drink, and when I do I definitely don’t overdo it. This was a beer tasting event, and that’s just what we did. Tasted some really amazing beers.
The Eagle Rock Brewery in Glendale hosts monthly events just for women. Each night has a theme and last night was ‘Bieres De Champagne”. It was a sampling of sparking beers that could almost pass as…. champagne!
I went with some of my favorite bloggers, Kaitlin and Katherine!
I made sure to represent with my nametag. Hello, my name is kelocity.com !
IMG_5818
IMG_5804
They went through each beer, one at a time and described how they make it, why they like it and what it should taste like. This was very fun for me since I know nothing about beer.
IMG_5811
IMG_5807
The first one was Deus from Belgium. This one was sweet, they told us to look for hints of honey, and they were definitely there. I really liked it.
IMG_5805
Plus beer that comes in wine bottles is fun. I’d never seen that before. Is it common?
IMG_5808
The second one was Maltose Falcons Brut that was made by a homebrew club in Woodland Hills. It was FABULOUS. My favorite of the night for sure. It had a lot of flavors that really did dance around my mouth. I never really knew what people meant when they say that, but this one definitely did.
IMG_5810
The third was Lifemans Cuvee-Brut from Belgium and it tasted like grape soda (in a good way). Maybe like an Italian soda. The good kind. It was so sweet.
IMG_5813
And lastly, we had the Malheur Brut Noir from Belgium. They said that there was “chocolate in the nose”. If you focused really hard, that was definitely there. I don’t usually like dark beer, but this one was different. It was delicious.
IMG_5815
The tasting room was a lot of fun, I’d definitely go back to try some new ones.
IMG_5817
It was a fun night out with the girls and I really enjoyed trying some beers that I’d probably never think to order in a restaurant or a bar. But maybe now I’ll actually read the descriptions on the menus and choose something fun next time.
Katherine sent us home with a bag of four of her Ah-Mazing macaroons. Seriously, these things are like crack. There’s a reason one of them is now missing from the picture….
IMG_5820
Ok, that was a lie. They are all now missing. I don’t know where they went. Don’t look at me!
Mid-Day Lunch Date!
Irving’s been getting out of work pretty late, so the past couple of days, I’ve been staying up til almost midnight waiting for him. And that is just way past my bedtime. I was a complete zombie today. Hopefully I’ll be smart enough to hit the hay a little earlier for the rest of the week. This morning, I woke up to Irving telling me that the exterminator was at the door. Eek! Granted, I should have been up at 8am anyways, but I was in a dead sleep. (We had ONE lone ant near our door a few weeks ago, but we don’t take any chances. Stay. Out. Of. My. House!)
Anyways, since Irving and I won’t see each other for dinner this week, we’ve been having lunch dates at home! He cooks, I come home and eat. Win. Win!
IMG_5798
He even did the dishes after I went back to work. What a guy, huh?
IMG_5799
I knew I needed an afternoon pick-me-up to keep my eyelids open, so I brought a rootbeer back with me. Surprisingly, only four people made “You’re drinking at work?” comments to me. Delicious. (Can you spot Irving in the background?)
IMG_5800
I was completely baffled to see it actually only had 20 calories!
IMG_5801
I’m SO excited to hang out with some fabulous bloggers tonight at a Girls Only Beer Festival. (Let’s hope I can stay awake!)
