Our Icelandic Honeymoon Part 3 May 21, 2010

One of days in Iceland, we did a coach bus tour of some of the highlights outside of the city.
The entire country of Iceland has about 500,000 people, nearly all of them live in Reykjavik. So the vast majority of the country is uninhabited.

On the tour, we stopped at one of the Geothermic plants. They showed us how they harvest the steam into electricity. They even had a slideshow so we could understand it….
Iceland - 2009 (347)

We were confused. lol

We were also lucky to see some of the infamous Icelandic Horses! They have the purest breed of horse in the world. They’ve never been mated with any other species, and it’s illegal to bring other kinds of horses into the country. They were really pretty. (But I kept my distance because I don’t like horses.)

Iceland - 2009 (427)

Next up, was Gullfoss. It was a beautiful waterfall in a canyon in the countryside.
The green sides were so lush, adn the water just looked like a mirror in the middle. It was HUGE, you can see the walking path on the left hand side.

They filmed the Music Video for Live’s Heaven at Gullfoss:

They also had buttercups growing on the side. I held it under my chin to see if I was sweet. lol
Iceland - 2009 (394)

There is something about the rawness of Iceland that I just loved.

Next up, was a visit to the Geysirs! And not just any geysir! The ORIGINAL Geysir. The one that all the other geysirs in the world are named after!

This was just a little one nearby.
Iceland - 2009 (431)

It was a whole park full of these thermal vents.
You can see how deep into the earth they go!
Iceland - 2009 (438)

Yes, it’s boiling water… but I wanted to touch it anyways. lol
Iceland - 2009 (441)

Here’s is Geysir ready to go!
You can see the boiling water bubbling up….

Iceland - 2009 (454)

Iceland - 2009 (455)

Iceland - 2009 (456)

Iceland - 2009 (451)

Hot water spewing everywhere, with nothing more than a rope stopping people from getting hit by it.
SOOOOOOOOO COOL!

Then we headed to Thingvellir National Park. This is where the Vikings used to meet back in those days.

Iceland - 2009 (468)

If you look in the distance, see how the mountains have a line under them? That is where the North American and Eurasian plates meet! That is a rift in the plates.

Iceland was formed when the two plates collided with each other. It really is new earth that has been created by tectonic movement and volcanoes. SO COOL!

So this vast plain is where the vikings used to make laws and such.
Iceland - 2009 (478)

It used to look like this:

This is me pretending I’m making important Viking decisions:

And this is me pretending to jump over the rifts:Iceland - 2009 (490)

The trip to Iceland is over… but the honeymoon continues on and on…

Our new rings!

Goodbye Iceland, you were fantastic!

Boston Marathon Running Gear May 20, 2010

I didn’t think I cared about having any more Boston Marathon gear. I mean, I got the jacket and that was pretty much all I really wanted. And on top of that, I LOVE the long sleeve technical shirt they gave us at the expo. AND I got a sweet Boston visor.

But when I was running last week, I realized that I REALLY wanted a “Boston Marathon” shirt I could run in. So people out on the running trail could be like “Oh wow, that girl ran the Boston Marathon!” So I ordered this awesome shirt from Adidas.

Capture

I actually ordered in two different sizes because technical shirts always run really small. But I LOVE this shirt!

It’s a little warm, I might not be able to wear it on really long runs when it gets hot, but it was really comfortable. It’s made for the new Adidas Mi (which I think is their answer to the Nike+). So it has a pocket for your MP3 player (and keys!)

And then the wire goes up through the shirt and comes out through a hole on the top! Brilliant!

IMG_3796

It keeps your headphones in place and they don’t bounce around. It “locks” the wire in place. I love this.

And of course, it has my Boston Marathon logo on the front. YAY!

I also got this cotton t-shirt….because what the heck, I finished, right!

Capture

It’s cotton, so I can’t run in it, but it’s still really nice. It’s the perfect weekend shirt.
(PS… all the BAA gear has been marked down on their website!)

In other news, Irving and I went on a walk tonight and we saw three skunks… and a cute little baby skunk! And I also did a cartwheel in someone’s front lawn. It was very exciting.

Sad it’s over…

Lately, every time I think about the Boston Marathon, I get really sad. I’m just sad that it’s over. I feel like it went by too fast. I wish I breathed it in more, I wish I looked around more. At night, I replay the day in my head, over and over again. I feel like the details are fading.

(I remember feeling the same way after my wedding. On the plane to Iceland for our honeymoon, I remember closing my eyes, trying to etch each little moment into my memory.)

At times, it really does feel like the Boston Marathon was just a dream. And then I get sad when I realize it DID happen, and I’ll probably never have the chance to run it again. That was my one shot at it. I will never qualify for Boston, and I’m just not sure how feasible it would be to fund-raise again. I shelled out close to $1,000 between the entry fees, donations and flights.

So now the question becomes…. to buy the overpriced race photos or not.
MarathonFoto took 20 great photos of me on the course.

I really want them to 1.) Scrapbook with them! 2.) To remember & celebrate those moments on the race course.

They’re just so expensive! I’m trying to justify the cost…. They don’t have 4×6 sizes, so the cheapest one is a 5×7 and they are $14.95 a piece! They also have a package where you get all images on a CD (so you can print them yourself) for $79.95.

So what do you think? Should I buy one or two for $15 each… or spring for the bigger package and get ALL the images for $80? Is it worth it?

The Biggest Loser Marathon May 19, 2010

So last night on The Biggest Loser, the final four ran the Biggest Loser Marathon. I always look forward to this episode because I just LOVE running! I get giddy when the contestants run.

It’s so incredible to hear the contestants say “Running a marathon was always one of my dreams”…”It’s the test of ultimate endurance”. I personally know what it feels like to want something so bad, train for hours and hours, and then cross that finish line. It really is a dream. It’s amazing to see other people accomplish the same thing.

But they only technically trained for 60 days…. how is that possible? How many miles do you think they run daily while on campus?

Daris finished in 4:02!! That’s pretty incredible. He beat Tara’s BL Marathon record by 50 minutes! It’s just crazy that someone who was SO unhealthy 6 months ago can beat MY marathon time by um… 2 hours! I don’t know how he did it. How do they run for so many miles without stopping? Do you think they stop? What about for water/food?

Then Koli came in at 6:08. Michael and Ashley finished in 6:26. I beat all three of them. Boo yea! Just kidding, they all did amazing. It was impressive.

And can we just stop for a minute and recognize how amazing Ally Vincent looks? She’s a rockstar.

[source]

But then the show hit a sore spot for me…. when Daris got on the scale and found out he gained 2 pounds at home. He said it was partly from eating late at night…. but partly from training for a marathon. And Bob basically REAMED him for it! He was like “If you’re running, there is no way marathon training will make you gain weight”…. but I disagree! Marathon training is grueling and it leaves your body feeling hungry all.of.the.time! I sympathized with Daris because I can relate to it.  Bad Bob! Bad! It totally gives people watching the wrong idea.

For that reason, I went online today, and voted for Daris to be in the final 3! He’s a great guy! And he runs marathons—fast! Vote for him!
Koli is amazing too. It’s a tough choice!

Anyways, off my soapbox.

And now for my Public Service Announcement for the week! If anyone is around on Sunday, the Biggest Loser will be shooting the first episode down at the Beach in Los Angeles! They are looking for people to come work out with the contestants!

We had such a great time with Erika and Timmy this weekend!

We took them to Philippe’s in Downtown LA. If you haven’t been yet, you really should. It’s one of those old Hollywood joints, where coffee is still 9 cents a cup! They are best known for inventing the original French Dip sandwich!

IMG_3775

In typical Kelley fashion, I didn’t order the French Dip…. I got the cheese sandwich!

IMG_3772

It was thick cheddar cheese on a crusty roll. Yes please!

Erika and I both got Pickles… of course.

IMG_3774

After we ate, we headed down to the Home Depot Center to catch a LA Galaxy game!
JR and Ashley met us down there too!! It was a great game.

The boys (JR, Irving, Timmy):

I missed a picture with Ashley!!! Aweee.

It was Military Appreciation night!
IMG_3779

I spent most of the game trying to get a good picture of Landon Donovan. haha

IMG_3784 IMG_3788

Because of our amazing seats, we were just a few rows down from where David Beckham was sitting! He had a private box. Yes, we saw him. Yes, there are pictures to prove it. But my camera died, and I’m going to have to bribe Erika to give them to me. 🙂

It was a great weekend. One of those weekends that feels like 5 days long. It was great. Erika and Timmy are moving out to LA soon and we are SO excited they will be our neighbors!!
