Hollywood Date Night February 20, 2014

To keep the momentum of Valentine’s Day weekend going, Irving and I had a fun date night planned for Sunday night! We hired a babysitter and headed into Hollywood for dinner and a play! We even valeted the car! (HAHAHA We would usually choose to park 2 miles away and walk than do this, but tonight was a special occasion… date night!) I wore a new black lace dress too! Fancy! (still wore my flats instead of heels though, gotta keep it real, right?)
IMG_20140216_175749

We ate at Fabiolus on Susnset Boulevard. We skipped the appetizers and went straight to the wine. We ordered a bottle of the house white. (We had never done that ever either!) It was fun!

Cheers!

I had a great pesto linguine and Irving ordered a chicken dish. Both were great! We had a great conversation about parenting, Adele, life, work and the future. I very much enjoyed the company of this guy.
20140216_173327

Then we headed up the street to the Pantages Theater to see Book of Mormom!
IMG_20140216_180405

We had been there once or twice before, but the theater really is breathtaking. Brings you back in time a bit and makes you appreciate ‘old hollywood’. It opened in 1930!

[Fun Fact: The Oscars took place here from 1949 to 1959!]

IMG_20140216_182733

We really liked the play. It was a musical and the songs were great. I thought the story could have used more depth, but it definitely had some great lines and characters.

What a wonderful night with my perfect valentine. xo

Pretty at the Tea Party February 19, 2014

Saturday morning, Adele and I had a date for a ‘Mommy and Me Tea Party’! It was an event that was hosted by Club Momme. Their events have always looked really fun but because they are a bit pricey by playdate standards (this one came to $27.50), I was holding out til the right one popped up. This one sounded fun though, it included tea time with your toddler, a photo session, goodie bag, and use of the indoor playspace at Pamper & Play. I finally convinced myself it was worth it and bought a ticket a week in advance.  I had been looking forward to it all week long. You’ll see below that it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, but we had a good time nonetheless.

It was all the way over the hill, near Beverly Hills (my first clue that maybe this event wasn’t for me). I found street parking and then saw that Adele was fast asleep in her carseat! She hasn’t taken a morning nap in MONTHS! I unbuckled her and she continued to sleep on my shoulder during the two-block walk to the venue. And then slept on me for another half hour or so until I eventually had to wake her up! This was the first time EVER she’s slept on my lap without being in the ergo carrier! Even as an infant, she never did unless she was swaddled. This was a special moment for me! I cherished it with all my heart! I thought to myself the whole day was already worth it just for this!

Once Adele was up, it was our turn for the photo session. I think they got some great shots, but then later found out that the session was free… but the actual photos were not. The 4×6 prints START at $115. Um, no.

I was sitting next to a mom who was hastily brushing her daughter’s hair and I overheard her telling her, “You know, you just don’t look pretty enough to take pictures today”. The daughter didn’t seem bothered by it, but it really made me mad. I immediately squeezed Adele a little tighter and whispered into her ear, “You’re the most pretty little girl in the whole world, I love you”. I know there’s all kinds of discussion out there about how instead of telling our girls they are ‘pretty’ or ‘beautiful’, we should use words like ‘brave’, ‘smart’ and ‘strong’. But I would never not tell my girl she is ‘pretty’! Come on, moms! Let’s give these girls the confidence, self-esteem and self-worth they need to be successful in this world!
</end rant>

The ‘Tea Party’ was sort of a joke. They had one kind of hot tea and one kind of iced tea… served in little sample cups (i.e. a few sips and you’re done). They did have some really nice, but fragile tea cups that I would never in a million years trust Adele with. And for sandwiches, they only had two kinds (a turkey/cheese one and a strawberry/peanut butter one). No snacks, no kid options, nothing else! Not even chips or cookies! What kind of tea party is this? But they did have some pouches and snack bars in the goodie bag, so Adele enjoyed that.

We spent the rest of our time there playing with some blocks and toys. I think she had a good time. And then I won the first raffle prize which redeemed part of the day for me. I was really glad I went though. It was quiet the experience for the people watching alone.

Oh, one more story..right before I left, another mom stopped me to tell me she LOVED Adele’s dress and then asked me who designed it. BAHAHAHA I almost burst out laughing and then I realized she was serious. Turns out it actually was designer… but it was a hand-me-down from a very generous friend (I had no idea!). Guess I shouldn’t have let Adele get strawberries and peanut butter on it from lunch, huh? But she did look really cute (ahem– PRETTY) in it, don’t you think?
IMG_20140215_115817

The moms over in that part of LA ain’t got nothing on my Valley Moms though. I’m so thankful for my amazing village of amazing mothers we’ve met over the past two years. Cheers to you, moms. Thank you for raising strong, confident children that I am honored Adele gets to be friends with. You know who you are. xo

A Weekend of Love February 18, 2014

We had such a great Valentine’s Weekend! And it was a long weekend too, due to the holiday on Monday! Now that’s love.  Adele had a potluck at her school, so I made mini tea sandwiches (inspired by my Downton Abbey party!). These were berry cream cheese on white bread!
IMG_4302

The cream cheese was pink which made a pretty little party sandwich! Not sure if the kids liked them at school, but Adele LOVED them!
IMG_4303

IMG_4305

She gave her friends little puppy and kitty valentines, along with a bag of teddy grahams. The tags said “BEAR HUGS TO XXXXX, LOVE, ADELE”. I saw it on Pinterest and I was so excited! Adele called them ‘cookie bears’. ha.
IMG_4308

I got out of work early on Friday, which gave us a head start to the weekend of loooooove! We met up with some friends at Pint Size Kids for an afternoon of pretend play!

And taking money out of the ATM to pay for it all… My, she’s like a grownup!IMG_4338

Then she did a load of laundry…

And even ironed it too!

Then she filled up her SUV with gas.

We also practiced pushing our dollies…

And taking excellent care of them.

IMG_4329

If you haven’t been to this place yet, you should check it out. It has everything toddlers could imagine. Including books and train sets too! Adele LOVED the choo choos!
IMG_4347

IMG_4349

And they have GIANT teddy bears. The things toddler dreams are made of.

It was so much fun. We’ll be back soon for sure!
IMG_4341

Once the three of us got back home, we had a Valentine’s day picnic lunch on the living room floor. Complete with cheese, crackers, olives, salad and raisins! We laughed so hard because it was sort of a disaster. Adele was stepping on everything and making quite the mess. But it was fun and I’m hoping this was a beginning of fun Valentine’s Day tradition! Only next year, I hope there is less sock lint on my plate and smooched crackers on the rug. =)

Our Valentine’s Weekend of Love didn’t end there! Stay tuned for Part 2!

Winter at the Beach

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kelocity @ 9:20 am

I know, I know. The timing of this post is pretty awful given the crazy storms hitting the rest of America… but over here in our LA Bubble, it’s been mid-70s and beautiful! (Don’t send me hate mail!)

Last weekend, I was feeling a lot of anxiety for no good reason. The week felt unbalanced, like I just didn’t have enough time to properly devote myself to anything. I was missing my girl and feeling like I need to re-center myself again. To hit that reset button and to remind myself what’s really important.

So when I woke up on Saturday, I packed up the car with a beach chair, enough pails and shovels for army, a cooler full of snacks and a pile of magazines and books. I drove without any real destination in mind. I just headed west towards the ocean until the right spot revealed itself. I ended up an hour away in Malibu. I almost paid $8 to park in a lot, but then decided to keep going down the road a bit until I found the perfect parking spot.

Yep, this looks like the perfect place to park, yes? No joke, I literally parked on the sand, we were THAT close. And it was freeeee! A good sign this adventure was meant to be!
20140201_140736

When I got there, Adele was napping in her carseat, so I rolled down all the windows and read a couple of magazines while enjoying the view. It was so peaceful and quiet. At one point, I looked into the rear view mirror and saw Adele’s eyes quietly looking back at me smiling.

I picked her up and hauled her, a chair, and three big bags across the sand towards the ocean. We found the perfect spot and spread out a big blanket. There were only a few people on the entire beach. It was perfect!
20140201_141446

My beach chair soon got taken over by my toddler, but she was so cute, I let her take it.
20140201_133541

I got some beach gunk on my phone’s camera lens, so these are a little blurry. But they help paint the ‘care-free’ picture from the day. 20140201_140838
A little beach reading!
20140201_141544
20140201_141615

We did get a little sand castle building in there too. But really, the most fun game of all is taking all the shovels and pails and putting them on the beach chair… and then taking them off… and then putting them on… Life with a toddler, you get it.20140201_143156

This day was exactly what we needed. It was one of my most favorite days with Adele, ever. Just the two of us, with no plan, no schedule. She had so much fun I think. We’ll have to ‘getaway’ more often. 20140201_140911Tear is from the wind I think. Nothing but smiles at the beach, promise!

20 Months: A Journey into the Unknown February 11, 2014

Filed under: Baby — Kelocity @ 9:53 pm

{This is a 1,400 word, un-proofread, random rambling post! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!}

I’m not quite sure how Adele is already TWENTY months old. I seriously feel like she should still be twenty hours old. Time becomes a cruel trick for parents, slow down!
IMG_4268

This month has been pretty incredible. Lots of big milestones: some new teeth, another ear infection, ditching the pacifier and becoming braver, smarter and stronger. She’s inching further and further away from babyhood.
IMG_4256

She’s developing quirks and personality traits that we hadn’t seen before this month. For example, we know she likes things organized. It’s almost like she enjoys putting toys back more than taking them out. She does’t like ‘messes’. When she sees things out of place or thrown on the floor she says “It’s a mess” and proceeds to clean it up. She also likes to place shoes, cups and toys in straight lines.
IMG_4283

Adele has become really into stuffed animals and ‘blankies’ now too. She sleeps with a zoo in her crib now. She is also getting into dolls too, she carries them around, pretends to feed them and puts them to bed. It’s adorable.
IMG_4285

She also gives hugs and kisses freely. She’s been a generous cuddler lately too.  She nuzzles into your neck and holds on tight. I waited 20 months for this!! And it’s the best feeling!

SLEEP
We had a slight two-week or so regression in sleep when we got rid of the pacifier, but she’s since bounced right back to sleeping 12-13 hours a night straight. Goes to bed at 7:30p and wakes up between 7:30a and 8a.

But she’s only napping for roughly 1 hour a day (sometimes she doesn’t nap at all!) We know we are really really really lucky, no complaints here!

FOOD
Food is a battle. She literally goes days without eating more than a handful of cheerios sometimes. Why does she hate food?! We’re back to throwing lots of it on the floor. We don’t force it (when she’s hungry, she’ll eat, right?) Recently, I read in my pediatrician book that at this age, they’re burning their baby fat and getting ready to lean out and shoot up in height, so they use their fat as fuel instead of calories from food…. makes sense I guess?

She still hates to chew, anything that requires chewing gets spit out! It’s frustrating, but we keep trying and offering and if something gets swallowed, i consider it a victory. We’ve been doing a lot of soups, pouches and using dippers such as hummus, yogurt, guacamole or sour cream. Tell me this phase will pass?!

For milk, she’s averaging 10oz/day of organic whole milk. Less than what’s recommended, but I can’t force her to drink it, right?
IMG_20140130_161932

I’m finding that this age is more about questions than answers. Sometimes I feel like I have NO idea what I am doing. Then I talk to my friends and realize we’re all in the same boat. We’re all doing the best we can trying to raise these little people (and live to talk about it!)

Which leads me to…

PERSONALITY
She’s a very busy girl. She’s got things to do, places to go and demands to make. I’m actually quite excited about this (and probably equally terrified). It’s pretty amazing to see her come out of her ‘baby shell’ and watch her start to see the world as something she can conquer. We haven’t experienced a tantrum yet (though she’s had her fair share of whining or pouting when she doesn’t get her way), but we haven’t seen anything that has lasted more than 30 seconds yet. I’m secretly hoping we miraculously got a kid who has a mild personality. She’s had a pretty ‘go with the flow’ attitude so far. Though, I’m sure she’ll have her moments… i just hope i’m not in the canned goods aisle at the grocery store when it happens!

Irving and I have been reading  “Happiest Toddler on the Block”. We also watched the DVD last week too. I highly recommend it. It’s helped us get some insight into the toddler brain and understand a little bit about what’s going on in their head. The gist of it is that toddlers are like cavemen. Their rational side just turns completely off when they’re upset. They are physically incapable of thinking straight when they get emotional. So you have to talk to them in a simple, easy to understand way. We’ve been using this ‘toddler-ese’ every day, and we’re pretty amazed that we able to help bring her back to center when she needs it.

The book also explains that there are three types of toddlers: Spirited, Easy Going and Shy. There’s a chart of how you can usually tell which one your child is. Adele is textbook ‘easy going’. She’s not a risk taker, but she’s also independent and confident. She looks before she leaps.

That being said, she is becoming braver on the playground, jumping, climbing, sliding and crawling through tunnels without looking back for my approval. So proud of her.

I am so curious to see what kind of child, teenager and adult she will become!
20140128_080342

Haha, she also can’t leave the house without at least five things in her hands now. Sure, you can bring your medical kit in the car, why not!
20140128_080354

She likes to walk on her own now instead of being pushed or carried. “Walk! Walk!”

HAIR!
Just had to mention that it’s FINALLY growing! We’re actually going to get it trimmed this week… but look! Hair!
20140128_080317

TOYS
Her favorite toys continue to be books. I love when she turns pages and literally gasps with surprise and joy at the pictures. She was able to name things you point to in the pictures, but now, she can even find things on demand! Where’s the butterfly? And she’ll point to it. It’s brought reading to a whole new level, she LOVES it!

She also loves dolls, stuffed animals and her play kitchen. Also her train set. And Puzzles! Oh, the puzzles! She can do her ‘Melissa & Doug’ puzzles in less than a minute. It’s pretty amazing actually. I may be biased, but I am impressed.
IMG_20140130_142127

I keep trying crayons and play-doh, but she’s still a tad young for those still. (One quick, funny story about that actually… i made a pretty awesome kitty out of play-doh last week –complete with ears and a tail– and I said “look at the nice kitty!” Then she ripped him in half and squished it’s head and said “Night Night, Kitty”. HAHAHAHA Yea. night night, rest in peace, kitty! She’s funny.)

She’s also getting a little bit hooked on technology. She wants to play videos on our phones, watch Elmo on tv, touch the fish on the Kindle and play games on her tablet (she got her own tablet for Christmas). She knows which games/songs are on which device! We’re aware at the potential for disaster with this, so now we try to limit it. We hid her tablet so she wouldn’t be ‘tempted’ to play. We also try not to use our own phones when she is around. I’ve also curbed my email checking at the dinner table and in bed. It’s crazy how addicted they become at such a young age!

LANGUAGE
So. Many. Words!
-Most farm animals and the sounds they make
-Most of the ABC alphabet song.
-She can count to three.
-Food words: apple, juice, milk, water, stick (breadsticks), fish, cheese, cookie (her favorite), snack.
-Toy words: blankie, book, puzzle, ball, duckie, chair
-Action words: Walk, Outside (Ow-sigh), up, down, hop
-Clothes: shoes (shoosh), pants, shirt, jacket (yak-it), hat, socks
-She apologizes! I hope she doesn’t have a guilty conscience when she grows up! But she says “sorry” when she throws something on the floor or drops something now. “Saw-ree mama”. It’s the cutest thing ever.
-Instead of answering “Yes” or “Yeah”, she now says “Oh-kaaay”. Adele, do you want to go outside? “Oh-kaay!”

And the best part, she’s stringing them together now. “Adele Shoes”, “Mommy, go outside”, “No jacket”, etc.

THE STATS
Weight: 23ish pounds
Height: Unknown
Teeth: Unknown! But I know she got a few more this month.
Diapers: Size 3
Shoes: Size 4.5 (but she’s wearing size 5 shoes with thick socks at the moment)
Clothes: 18 Months

We love her so much, this was a fun one.
