I love when people do ‘Day in the Life’ posts, so I decided to do one too! Let me take you (hour by hour) into my world for a day.

6a – After sleeping for NINE hours, I hear little baby squeaks coming through the monitor. When enter Adele’s room, she is awake and waiting for me!
IMG_4298

I unswaddle the sleeping beauty and get excited to see the “Great Morning Stretch” (my favorite!)
IMG_4299
Hands up!

Accompanied by a giant smile! I don’t mind getting up at 6am when I get greeted with this! So cute!
IMG_4300

After giving her lots of kisses, it’s time to eat! After that, she’s perfectly full and content.
IMG_4311

She gives me lots of coos to tell me how happy she is.
IMG_4310

Then it’s time for a diaper and outfit change!
IMG_4318

IMG_4320

And we sing The Wheels on the Bus and laugh at each other for a few minutes.
IMG_4321

6:30a –Adele plays on the playmat and I sit next to her and pump (I’m trying to build my supply!)
IMG_4325

IMG_4341

7a – She continues to play and giggle while I eat a Cinnamon Roll next to her.
IMG_4335

When she gets bored with the mat, it’s TUMMY TIME!
IMG_4343

Is there anything in the world cuter than little baby bums?
IMG_4342

7:30a – I hold Adele for a little while until her eyelids begin to droop. Perfect time to strap her in the carseat and take off on a run!
IMG_4354

Today marks my return back to running! I did day 1 of the ‘Couch to 5K’ program. It included 1-minute running and then 90 seconds of walking. We did that together for a half-hour before it started to get hot out. Adele slept the whole way! Apparently she likes when mama runs! Whoo hooo!
IMG_4349

8a – When we get back home, Adele is still sleeping in the stroller so I do the dishes and clean up the kitchen from the night before.
IMG_4384

8:30a – I take her 6-week photos and play with her on the rug for a bit. She loves her lamby!
IMG_4355

Hi mom!
IMG_4365

IMG_4369

Mom doesn’t stop snapping photos until she sees a smile. Adele is catching on. =)
IMG_4374

9a – Time to eat again! This time with a pumped bottle!
IMG_4378

I switched from the Calma nipples to a regular nipple for this feeding and she did SO much better than before. I think we figured it out! Good job, baby girl! She downed 5 ounces in like 8 minutes!
IMG_4380

Dad wakes up and gets some cuddle time with her. Awee! She loves her daddy!
IMG_4381

IMG_4382

9:30a – Pump again while baby sleeps in the Mamaroo.
IMG_4383

10a – I jump in the shower while Irving is on duty. Then we continue to clean up the house together. (I feel like that’s all we do! There’s always something to put away!) Adele is still sleeping. I make a smoothie for Breakfast #2.
IMG_4389

11a – I pump again!  (every two hours!)

11:30a – Irving feeds Adele with a bottle, she does great!
IMG_4390

IMG_4395

I run to CVS to fight with the Pharmacist for the THIRD TIME this week. (Bottom line: My insurance company paid $43,000 for me to have a baby… and is DENYING my $20 birth control pills… SERIOUSLY?! Don’t even get me started!)

12p – Irving and I have leftover Chili for lunch (courtesy of our friend, Erin! Thank you!)

1p – We load up the car with all the errands we have to run this week!
IMG_4398

Actually, Irving loads up the car… me and Adele read a book together in the meantime.
IMG_4399

2p – I nurse Adele and head out to run some errands. First stop: The Library! I think the sole reason I wanted to have kids was to bring them to the library. I am SO excited for her to someday pick out her own books to read each week! But this time, she just slept. haha

We also ran to do the Recylcing and pick up a few things at Babies R’ Us. (Diaper Genie Refills are on sale this week, people! Exciting stuff!)

4:30p – Return home, nurse the baby. Walk around singing songs to her. She LOVES it, obviously.
IMG_4403

IMG_4406

5p – Pump while Adele cries on the playmat. It’s only 10 minutes, patience, my love! After that, I hold her while I eat some pizza.

5:30p – Adele goes down for a nap….

6p – Just kidding, she just wants to be held apparently. I put her in the Moby so I can get some things done.
IMG_4408

7p – She is hungry again. Time to Eat!
IMG_4411
Feed me mom!

8p – I tried to entertain her, but all she wants to do is eat again! After this, she can’t keep her eyes open. Despite trying to keep her awake, it’s time for bed for the night.

She slept from 8p-4a (Eight Hours!) At 4am, I fed her again and she went back to sleep til 7:30a! And now the cycle starts all over again!

6 Weeks! July 21, 2012

I remember coming home from the hospital, and feeling so overwhelmed and scared to take care of a newborn. Those first weeks of Adele’s life were the most challenging days I’ve ever encountered. Filled with lots of love and happiness too, but also paired with fear and sadness too (blame the hormones). I remember that on day 8 or 9 of her life feeling like those dark emotions were never going to fade away. People kept telling me that everything would change in 4-6 weeks. I did the math… 6 weeks was 42 days away! That seemed like too many and I really didn’t think I’d make it to that point…. yet here I am! 42 days later! And it’s TRUE what the say! Everything changed when she turned one-month old and it just keeps getting better.
IMG_4277

She’s sleeping 8-9 hours a night straight, she’s smiling, she’s fun to interact with now! She’s learning and growing more everyday! I am enjoying being Adele’s mom. I am excited to wake up in the morning to see her. She makes me smile all day long.
IMG_4280

Six weeks is such a developmental milestone for a newborn and I just can’t believe we made it! Thank you so much to everyone who commented, emailed, called or visited during those first few weeks. You were all so helpful and we are so thankful for the encouragement and support. We conquered and came out on the other side! I seriously feel like super woman now. I made it through the first 6 weeks! I can do anything! haha

When I look at her now, I don’t see a newborn. I see an infant! She has expressions and preferences! I can even see rays of her personality starting to shine through. She fits in so wonderful in our family. We are SO happy she is here. The best is yet to come!

We’ve definitely gotten better about not rocking Adele to sleep every time. This week has been so refreshing and my arms have enjoyed the relief! She’s learning to fall asleep on her own and every day gets easier. IMG_4288

Today, she was a little clingier than usual though. She just wanted to be held all morning, so I finally surrendered to her beautiful little eyes and tucked her into the Moby for a few hours.
IMG_4293

She loved being close to me and probably loved being bounced around as I did chores around the house. But the best part was that my arms didn’t have to hold her up! HOORAY!

A is for Adele July 18, 2012

HER FIRST NAME: ADELE

Some people have been asking where we came up with Adele’s name (Adele Khalifa). Although we love the singer, we did not actually name our daughter after her. I have loved the name long before “Set Fire to the Rain” hit the airwaves and the singer rose to fame.
adele

Our daughter was actually named after my great-grandmother (her great-great-grandmother), Adela. She was the matriarch of my mother’s family and we were so happy to honor her in this way.

Here she is holding me 29 years ago!

HER MIDDLE NAME: KHALIFA
Again… no, we did not name our daughter after the  rapper, Wiz Khalifa. (Although that would be pretty awesome if we did. HAHA)
Wiz-Khalifa1

Irving actually suggested Khalifa as her middle name when we were about 8.5 months pregnant. We both thought it was really beautiful, but once we researched the meaning, we loved it even more. Khalifa is an Arabic word that means ‘Highest Ruler’ or ‘One who Succeeds’. It’s typically a name only given to men, but in the romance languages… words that end in an ‘a’ are usually feminine, so I liked it for Adele. Not many women are associated with the title ‘Khalifa’, so we really liked what it stood for. We want her to know that no matter what, she can do anything she wants to do with her life.

The Burj Khalifa is also the tallest building in the world (located in Dubai) and we visited it in 2010. We loved that we could name her after one of our favorite places we’ve traveled to. Fitting, no?
IMG_0650

We debated for a long time if a name defines a person… or if a person defines a name. We hope that she embodies a little of both theories. We’ve given her a strong name, but as she grows, I’m sure she will define it in her own way.

I love my little Adele Khalifa.

Sleep Schedules July 14, 2012

Even though Adele is only five weeks old, I’m trying to learn about her sleep patterns so that I can create some kind of schedule for her. I know newborns just sleep when they’re tired and eat when they’re hungry, but now that she is over a month old, I want to start a routine.
IMG_4127

Last week, I started marking down her sleep, awake time and feedings.

Anyone that knows me knows how much I LOOOOVE colored pens!
IMG_4131

Even though each day was different, I’m noticing a few patterns:

-Her longest stretch of sleep is overnight (anywhere from 4.5-7 hours!)
-She naps best in the morning. Afternoon naps are usually much shorter
-Her fussy time is from 8-11p (eat, sleep, cry, repeat!)
-She eats every three hours during the day

I really can’t complain since she is sleeping through the night, but I am having a hard time getting her to fall asleep. For every single nap or at bedtime, we have to swaddle her up tight, put on the white noise, sing to her, and carry her around our house as we bounce and rock her to sleep. At first it wasn’t so bad because it made us feel good that we were able to lull her to sleep with minimal crying… but now it’s gotten to the point where she can’t sleep unless we hold her! I’ve created a monster!
IMG_4116

Holding her for hours and hours each day like this is killing my arms and back! She’s over 9 pounds now!
IMG_4124

When we put her down, she screams! Even if she appears to be fast asleep! It’s a vicious cycle that I am desperate to break! So starting today, we’re all putting on our big-girl pants and nixing this bad habit! Today, for both of Adele’s naps, we held her for only a few seconds, kissed her cheeks, put on the white noise, stuck the pacifier in her mouth, and quietly left the room…. and SHE DID IT! She fell asleep on her own! Hallelujah!

I’m hoping things go equally as well at nighttime too. Cross your fingers!

As much as I love cradling the baby burrito and looking into those beautiful eyes as she drifts off into La La Land… I will be thankful to have my arms back! #NewMomLessons

Any other tips for breaking the ‘rocking to sleep’ routine?
