A Year to be Thankful for… November 29, 2010

Thanksgiving was a blast this year. It’s always fun when families from all over the country can get together to celebrate family. This time around, we headed up to San Francisco to Irving’s mom’s house.

We left late on Wednesday night to ‘beat’ the traffic rush. We hit a little bit on the grapevine heading out of Los Angeles…

But after that, it opened up and it was actually a really nice drive. Per usual, we stopped at Harris Ranch for dinner. I love that place. One of these days, we’re going to spend the night there, it’s just so cute.

~~~~~
On Thanksgiving Day, we woke up, and the cooking began!
IMG_2099
I made my favorite Sweet Potato Casserole (the recipe from my Aunt Donna that I make for Thanksgiving every year). It’s so good!
IMG_2084
Awe!
IMG_2092
Before we knew it, EJ (Irving’s sister) and  her wife Sarah had arrived…and jumped straight into the kitchen!
IMG_2086
Sarah’s mom Mona and Nini struck up a conversation and entertained the cooks.IMG_2088
IMG_2096
Irving also helped prepare our Thanksgiving meal…
IMG_2087
Don’t worry…we woke him up to carve the Turkey!
IMG_2100
Sarah made a fantastic Pecan Pie!
Our Turkey was AWESOME! I am not a huge turkey eater, but I really enjoyed this one.
And if that wasn’t enough food… perhaps we should have dessert? We had a whole bunch of treats including the Peacn Pie, Pumpkin Cheesecake and these chocolate covered dates we brought back from Dubai!
IMG_2131
We finished off the night with a fun game of ‘Apples to Apples’. Even Nini played, it was so fun!
And then I think we all fell asleep with food comas. What a fun day!
And Away we go! November 7, 2010
What can I say? We caught the travel bug….big time. I traveled through Europe for four months in college, but our travel adventures began together in 2008 when we went to Italy. And we were hooked! Last year we jetted off to Russia and the Baltic, it was so exciting to be in places like Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tallin.
And now….
IMG_0387
Kelley and Irving take on the Middle East! On October 23, we jumped on a 16 hour flight non-stop from Los Angeles to Dubai!!
IMG_0388
I have to be honest, 16 hours on a plane sounded like the worst thing in the world, but it really wasn’t that bad.
IMG_0392
They had a cool feature on the TV screens at each seat where they have two cameras mounted: one in front of the plane and one looking straight down. So as you’re flying, you can see what the Pilot sees! It was very cool.
IMG_0390
They have amazing entertainment on board, over 1200 channels of movies, tv and music. It really made the time fly by.
IMG_0395
We were skeptical of the food, but it wasn’t that bad.
IMG_0393
We had a 3 course dinner, snacks and breakfast. They even served us a slice of pizza in the middle of the night. HAHA just like college. Smile
At one point, we looked out the window and realized we were flying somewhere over Iraq. That was humbling. Dubai is 11 hours ahead of Los Angeles…which means it is literally on the other side of the world.
We have 7 exciting days planned in Duabi and then we fly to Cairo to start a 9 day tour of Egypt with Contiki!
Stay tuned for two weeks worth of pictures and adventures! We are giddy with excitement. And away we go!!
Sailing to the Swedes September 12, 2009
After Estonia, we had another free day in Helsinki that we spent shopping and sightseeing. Then we boarded our overnight ferry to Stockholm, Sweden. We stood outside on the deck as our boat drifted away from Finland.
IMG_1525
All of Contiki was at the bottom of the boat, but that was ok with us. The party goes wherever Contiki is anyways.
IMG_1561
We spent the time having dinner, exploring and playing lots of Uno. (Traveler Tip: Bring Uno! Everyone knows how to play and it makes it easy to start conversations and groups together. We’ve taken it on every trip!)
IMG_1557
We arrived in Stokholm in the morning and were surprised to learn that the Contiki bus was with us the whole time! If you look close, you can see the bus driving out of the boat!
IMG_1562
YAY! We love our bus!
IMG_1563
Even though Sweden is in the EU, they are still using their own currency, the Kronor. It is a little confusing when you go to multiple countries, but the tour manager always tells you in advance what you need and when. We use an international ATM card, and withdraw money from ATMs when we arrive. In our experience, that is the cheapest way to do it.
IMG_1567
Our first stop was the Stokholm CIty Hall, which is located right on a beautiful river.
IMG_1571
It might seem a little boring to visit a city hall, but this place has international significance.
IMG_1575
It is the host venue for the Nobel Banquet (for all of the Nobel Prize winners).
IMG_1582
Picture this great room looking like this with almost 1,500 guests!
[source]
After a tour of all the great rooms, we had some free time to explore Stokholm.
IMG_0771
Europe sure does love it’s ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremonies. Sweden was no different. It was quite crowded, but we were able to see the processional.
IMG_1607
That afternoon, we visited the Vasa Museum. Inside is an old Swedish Warship built in 1628! It sank less than a mile into it’s maiden voyage.  Surprisingly, it renamed largely intact and they were able to put it together again in the 1960s.
IMG_0800
Also inside the museum were artifacts found onboard and the remains of 15 people who were onboard.
IMG_0806
We ended the day going to a Stokholm favorite: The Absolut Icebar!
IMG_1660
Who doesn’t want to go to a bar made out of ice?! Everything from the shotglasses to the bar itself is made out of ice. They give you space suits to put on because it’s really really cold in there!
IMG_1666
The next morning, our tour was over and it was time to head back to the States. It was an amazing trip, once of the best we’ve ever taken. We came home with a couple of bottles of Russian Champagne (which they call Shampanskoye!) It was so good!
Being in Helsinki was a much different experience than being in Russia. The mentalities of the countries are stark contrasts.
IMG_1411 IMG_0471
IMG_1419
Everywhere we travel, there’s at least one building completely covered in scaffolding somewhere. We always joke about it actually. I mean, it’s great they’re restoring these old landmarks, but I want to see it as it should be!
IMG_1425
We’re pretty big soccer fans (and so were all our Aussie tourmates), so when we found out that the Women’s Euro Finals were being held at the Olympic Stadium, we jumped at the chance!
IMG_1494
Plus, I’m a sucker for Olympic Stadiums, I’d love to visit all of them before I die!IMG_0440
On our second day in Finland, we decided to board a ferry to visit the country of Estonia. It’s just a hop, skip and a jump away!
