A runner with an appetite for adventure!

And today, I climbed a Mountain. April 3, 2011

That’s right. Yesterday, I was in the valley of ‘woe is me’, and today, I climbed a mountain. IMG_5073

We slept in this morning, woke up feeling refreshed but in desperate need of some fresh air. We needed a sweaty hike to reconnect with ourselves and with nature. Something to pull us back in.
IMG_5051

We hiked a 6 mile trail in the Verdugo Mountains. But we made one wrong turn at the beginning and found this!
IMG_5044

We had to turn around and backtrack to find the trailhead.
IMG_5046

Once we got going, it was really nice, but the first 2.5 miles were straight uphill. It was HARD!
IMG_5052

The incline was killer and seemed to drag on and on. But the views definitely made up for it.
IMG_5053

I love seeing LA from up above. It feels so big (especially in traffic), but from up there, it looks so small and quiet.
IMG_5055

But this was just the halfway point…And then the climb continued. And continued. And continued.
IMG_5054

I was SO thankful for the overcast sky today (I’m not a happy camper in the heat). But we came prepared anyways.
IMG_5058 IMG_5057

A few times, I really wanted to give up. I jokingly begged Irving to let us turn around before reaching the top. See that tower at the top of that hill? That was the goal. Look how far away (and high) it looks!) We’d already been hiking for an hour by this point too!
IMG_5056

Every time I would think we’re getting closer, it seemed impossible to reach. (I think I’m really out of shape). We got passed by a couple of people. HAHA).

But each time I wanted to quit, I kept thinking that I can’t call my blog post “I ALMOST climbed a mountain!” I had to REALLY climb it! All the way to the top!
IMG_5060

And then finally, we made it. My, how far we’ve come.
IMG_5061

That’s what a 2,689ft elevation climb will give you. Check out this elevation map from my Garmin! Straight up and straight down!
mountain

At the top, someone built a chair. And whoever this person is deserves a hug. I LOVE YOU CHAIR!
IMG_5063

I sat in it for a good ten minutes and took in the view. Felt SO good to get out and do something for myself today.
IMG_5064

We did it babe! And it hurts so good! What a workout!
IMG_5065

I only went as far as that chair, but Irving wanted to actually touch the gate of the tower…. I told him to go for it…
IMG_5071

…But I’m staying riiiiiight here. haha
IMG_5072

Instead of coming back down the mountain the way we came, we kept going on the trail that eventually looped back around. Here’s the map from my Garmin. After lunch, we did walk back to where we started to completely finish the loop.

At the bottom of the trail, we ate lunch at the Golf Club.
IMG_5081IMG_5074

As soon as we sat down, my Garmin chimed ‘6 miles’. I love nice round milage numbers.
IMG_5075

We were really hungry (it was 2:30p by the time we were done!) I got the BLTA and it was killer! Oh man, hit the spot.
IMG_5077

We relaxed, and watched the birds pick at the crumbs other people’s kids left behind.
IMG_5079

It was a half mile back to the car, so that brings our hike to 6.5 miles total.

On the way back home, we stopped to pick up some groceries for the week. The usual. But how funny is this sign for Ramen Noodles? People did double takes looking at the sign, too funny. The scary thing is, there actually was a point in my life where I may have thought that was an incredible deal. ha!

IMG_5082

Tonight, our friends Erika and Timmy came over to have dinner and play some games. (Erika Killed us in Yahtzee!)

Irving made some Chili Cheese Dogs on the grill. They were from Omaha Steak and we really liked them. No better way to kick off summer than with a cookout.

We were supposed to put the chili on the dog like this…
IMG_5085

But I preferred to have my chili on the side.
IMG_5084

I’m always looking for an excuse to eat Ketchup. yes!
IMG_5086

Served with a side of homemade Pasta Salad. Very excited to have leftovers for lunch this week!

In other news, The 200-Mile Ragnar Relay is in 12 days! I’m slated to do 12.3 miles total, but I’m really hoping to squeak in another mile in there somewhere to count it as a half marathon! After this hike, I feel ready. Let’s do this!

Mountains of Snow! February 1, 2011

This morning, I tried to get a bit of upper body strength in. I put on the Today Show and got down to business with my 5lb weights:

  • Rows 15×2 each
  • Bicep Curls 15 x2
  • Overhead Tricep Dips 15 x 2
  • Pushups (girl style) x 20
  • Chest Press 15×2
  • Crunches x 50

The big story on the news today is all that snow the east coast is being pounded with. I just can’t believe all the bad weather they got over there this year. It’s already February and they are expecting another two feet of snow by tomorrow! The reporters keep talking about all the freezing temperatures across the country… and then they show LA and it’s 72, 74, 75, sunny, sunny, sunny. We live in a bubble out here.

My mom told me she can’t see her neighbors over the snowbanks, they just hold up their shovels and wave to each other that way. Hopefully they have an amazing spring and summer to make up for all this white stufff!

The Today Show screwed up today and they left Al’s microphone on too long and we could hear him saying “What? What should I say next? Who do I toss this next segment to? Matt?” I always think this is hilarious when it happens because I used to work in a newsroom. Anyways, happy Tuesday!

Monday Yoga January 31, 2011

I’ve never really enjoyed Yoga. I’m not the ‘slow down, breathe deep and close your eyes’ type of girl. I prefer to go outside and run with loud music. It’s just who I am. Perhaps I’m naïve and don’t fully appreciate the peace that Yoga can bring to mind and body. I feel like I’m going to offend the blog world by admitting I Just. Don’t. Like. It. But there, I said it. I bought a three-class pass, and I still have one more left.

Tonight’s class was called ‘Shadow Yoga’. The description of the class is:

Shadow Yoga is a modern school of yoga rooted in classical Hatha yoga. This is a slow-moving class, exploring basic poses and breath work. It combines traditional yoga, martial arts and Ayurvedic healing. This class helps to release our "shadows" where we are blocked or stuck in emotional, energetic or behavioral patterns. This is an awesome class. Everyone welcome.

There was a lot of slow movements and long poses. It definitely loosened up some tight muscles I had, but I was pretty bored. It frustrates me. Instead of feeling strong and empowered, I feel weak and defeated because I can’t hold some of the poses everyone else can. Then my eyes just start wandering around the room waiting for inspiration to strike me. My favorite part was the last ten minutes. All the lights go out and we lay down in total darkness. It felt nice to lay down, close my eyes, and know that there is nothing else I had to do in those ten minutes. No guilt. No pressure. No to-do list. Just relaxing. That part was nice. Letting go of guilt is something we could all use.

I know, I’m a self-proclaimed Yoga Pessimist. All in all, this class really wasn’t for me, and it made me appreciate the Lo-Flo class from the other night. I might go back again and do that one soon. People tell me that the more you do Yoga, the more you like it. Maybe that’s the case, I’ll let you know if I change my mind after one more class.

The highlight of the evening was taking the class with two of my favorite People! Janet and Chely! It was so nice to see them all together again. We’re all Team in Training Alumni. Friends who run and do yoga together, stay together.

Blogging Event: Salonpas and Kathy Kaehler! January 29, 2011

Today I was invited to join other Los Angeles bloggers for a “Be Fit and Pain Free in 2011”  event hosted by Kathy Kaehler and sponsored by Salonpas
IMG_3241

It was exciting to meet Kathy. She trains lots of celebrities (Julia Roberts, Kim Kardashian and Denise Richards).
IMG_3244

It was held in a private community up the valley. The area was gorgeous and there were lots of horses and dogs out and about. Once I got to the event, it was fun to meet the other bloggers and their guests. Lots of chatting and mingling. It’s so fun to meet new people. My guest was the lovely Erin. Thanks for coming, Erin!
IMG_3246

I got to hang out with Mrs. SkinnyRunner again!
IMG_3247

The room was set up with all kinds of basic workout equipment. Kathy wanted to teach us moves that we can easily do at home.

Kathy Started off introducing the different stations of the circuit for the workout.
IMG_3253

We did 1 minute of each of these (x3):

  • Step Ups with High Knees
  • Bicep Curls with Bands
  • Chair Sits
  • Plank
  • High Step Ups
  • Tricep Dips
  • Trampoline Jumping (my favorite!)
  • Leg slides
  • Lateral Raises
  • Squats

Not only was it a nice workout, it was fun to socialize as we did it. Lots of inspiring bloggers out there!
IMG_3264

IMG_0353

The Trampoline was the BEST! Kathy told us that jumping is one of the best ways to flush out your lymphatic system (so if you have a cold coming on, hit the trampoline!)
IMG_3268 IMG_3267

Jump, Jump Jump! It was so fun to feel like a little kid!

IMG_3255

After the workout session, we gathered around to talk about blogging, fitness and over all healthy living.
IMG_0360

It was great to hear Kathy’s approach in regards to physical fitness. She emphasized that you only get one body. No trade-ins or replacements. It’s important to exercise and fuel our bodies properly to make them go the long haul. We also talked about the power of blogging and how great is to have a community of like-minded, supportive people to share ideas with.

For participating, we each got goodie bags filled with products to help in being Fit and Pain Free in 2011. Along with some of Kathy’s products, we got face masks, makeup, a giftcard and quite a few samples of Salonpas.
IMG_3279

The circuit workout today was low impact (which was great for my shin splints). It was refreshing to do a workout that didn’t include running. But when I got home, I whipped open one of the Salonpas packets. Each one contains three patches, so now I’m pretty well stocked (YES!) I slapped one right on that darn shin splint. It feels so good. It has menthol in it, so it’s cool and tingly a little bit. I also found out today that they contain a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug too, so a little bit of that gets into your body. It’s basically doing the job of a topical relief in addition to Advil.Maybe that’s why it works so well.
IMG_3281

I’ve had it on for almost two hours now and even while I’m typing this post, I can still feel it working. I think I might leave it there all day and see how it feels tonight when I stretch it out.

Thank you so much to Salonpas and Kathy for inviting me to the event. I had a great time. And now I have a bunch of brand new blogs to follow too!

Today I did Yoga… January 25, 2011

The title pretty much sums it up. I bought a three-session pass for InYoga through LivingSocial last fall and it is expiring soon. So tonight, I went to the first of three classes. It was the ‘Lo-Flo- class, which was a slow moving class, with a little ‘flow’ and a lot of meditation, stretching and relaxing. The lights were turned off and we just had a little candlelight, so I was definitely able to let everything go and enjoy it. Just when I thought 90 minutes was too long, the class was ending. It was the perfect way to spend a Tuesday night.

Namaste!
