A runner with an appetite for adventure!

How to cram it all in… February 25, 2011

Filed under: Hollywood Events — Kelocity @ 11:44 am

This week has been a little nutty in the Kelocity household. Ever since we got back from Boston, it’s been non-stop. I’m barely unpacked from the trip, and the stack of mail on my desk is a little scary. Let’s just say, I’m really glad it’s Friday. Looking forward to a relaxing and productive weekend at home. Bring on the to-do list! (Is it strange that Irving and I find to-lists relaxing?)

Yesterday, I worked a 14-hour day up in Santa Barbara. I forget how gorgeous it is up there. There are mountains, gorges, lakes, wineries, small towns, and ocean views. It was a bit on the chilly side, but just so refreshing to be outside in the sun.

This was my office for the day. Yea, isn’t my life awful?
Anyways, I finally got home last night at 8pm (I left the house at 6am). I threw my keys on the counter, kicked off my shoes, and was just about to grab a snack…. when Irving called me. He was at an Oscar Party (with some of the nominees there–no celebs, but some of the behind the scenes people!) But he said the party was awesome and I should come down to join him. So I put my apple back in the fridge, and changed into a dress and headed out.

Here’s a tip… Wearing pearls dresses up any outfit!

Irving gave me a freshwater pearl necklace for Valentine’s Day! I LOVE it! I told him that at SOME point in my life, I’d love a real string of pearls… and then this beauty appeared in a gorgeous box on VDay. I’m a lucky girl.

But Irving was right, the party was awesome. I mean, there was even a red carpet!
There was a 70s theme, and they had everything from disco balls, to lava lamps to old school video games (think pacman and donkey kong!)

The food was awesome. It was all comfort food. They had Truffle Oil Mac & Cheese, fish sticks, fritos with chili (I’m told this is an MIT thing?) and a bunch of other great food from your childhood!

And then… there was dessert. A whole table of food that made you feel like a kid again. They had whoopie pies (chocolate and red velvet!), marshmallows, cream puffs, animal crackers, and a slew of chocolate fountain goodies.  I had half a whoopie pie and called it a night. I was so full!

They also had glazed doughnuts on a stick…

I don’t eat donuts (only Dunkin Donut chocolate munchins). But my husband could have probably put away this entire bucket. He was very excited about the donuts. =)

I’m pooped…. 14 hour workday that included 5 hours of driving…. AND a Hollywood Party… I’m ready for the weekend!

The really good…and really, really bad! February 23, 2011

Let’s start with the really bad, shall we? I have not had soda (diet or regular) for over three years. I stopped drinking it a year before my wedding because I heard it made you crave sugar and was full of chemicals. I eat enough crap and didn’t need any more junk if I could help it.

Today, we had a catered lunch (mexican food! My favorite!) So I thought that maybe a diet 7up would be a nice way to wash the rice and beans down. WRONG! Ew! There is a reason I don’t drink the stuff. Gross! And I am glad it tasted gross. One less bad thing in my life to tempt me! I dumped the entire can down the sink.

But don’t worry, I made up for it with a couple of these! (This is the “really good” part of the post!)

I wait for these All Year Long! Mmmm…..

I will be going for a run tonight to attempt to burn these off. And it will be totally worth it because these are are awesome.

Random fact of the day…. there are two companies that produce Girl Scout Cookies… and depending on where you are in the country, they have different names! My beloved Samoas are also called Caramel Delites on the East Coast!

Ragnar Leg Assignments!

I’m SO excited to be on a SoCal Ragnar Relay team. And I think I found a good one too! Ragnar is a two-day 200 mile relay race from Los Angeles to San Diego. Each team has 12 people who take turns running. You nap in between legs, eat in the van, and run with a head lamp at 2 in the morning. Sounds like a party to me!

We had our first team meeting last week, but I couldn’t attend since I was in Boston! But it looks like everyone is organized and motivated to RUN! Get this, we are even going to have a video production team with us shooting footage and producing a movie about it! All of a sudden my running outfits have become even MORE important. I might need a new running skirt, yes?

Don’t you love sweaty hair?

I got my leg assignments, I am runner #10 (out of 12). I will run three separate legs consisting of 1.) 3.3 Miles Easy
2.) 6.1 Miles  Hard
3.) 5.9 Miles Hard

For a total of 15.3 Miles! This is exactly what I wanted. Some of the runner positions run as much as 21.2 miles and as little as 13.1 so I am happy to be right in the middle. Time to get training!

I know. I know. I’ve been MIA lately. But I have a good excuse. I’ve been in Boston for the past five days to attend an amazing wedding.

Other Highlights from the trip:
–Eating Crispellis and Rice Balls from an Italian restaurant that only sells Crispellis and Rice Balls. (Both were life changing, trust me!)

–Hanging out with my sister and her BF. They are really fun people. I kinda like em’.

–Playing Scribblish and Left, Right, Center with a group of my high school friends

–Meeting up with the one and only Baby Gaga!

–Seeing 3 inches of NEW snow accumulate outside in less than two hours.

It was a great trip back home, but we’re definitely looking forward to some warmer weather. Catch ya on the West Coast!

New B.A.A Rules February 16, 2011

I’m sure all the crazy runners have already heard, but news exploded this morning when the B.A.A. announced it’s new qualifying standards and entry process into the 2012 and 2013 Boston Marathons.

For the 2012 Boston Marathon, the faster you run, the earlier you can register. Even if you qualify, you might not get in because the people who run faster than the qualifying get first dibs.

And for the 2013 race, they are making the qualifying times even tougher by requiring everyone to finish five minutes faster than in the past.

I personally don’t have a problem with this. It’s an elite race that caters to the world’s greatest runners. That’s the allure of it. As a spectator, you know it’s going to be exciting, fast and emotional. As a runner, you know you’re running the world’s oldest official marathon race and there is history on the pavement you’re pounding.

Let me be clear — I love fast runners. I admire them. I like to watch them run. I am amazed at how athletes bodies  push through the unimaginable.  I am glad that Boston has tight standards, and I’m jealous of the people who CAN and DO qualify. I’m genuinely happy for them. They deserve it.

My problem comes with the comments of people on blogs, newspaper and facebook posts about this. They are just mean and narrow minded. And they attack the charity runners….which makes me MAD.

Some of the Comments From the BAA Facebook Page:
“As far as charity runners go, make them qualify as well. Charities are great but Boston is different than every other marathon and everyone shouldn’t be able to run it.”

“Drop the non time qualifying runners and get back to it being about time –not who donated money to whoever!!!”

Ok… first of all, I understand Boston is different, which is the draw for a lot of people. I understand that people are mad. But the BAA Charity teams raise MILLIONS of dollars for excellent causes. I hope whoever wrote those comments never gets cancer and needs the help of the hospitals and clinics who benefit from this money. If they made charity runners qualify, they wouldn’t come CLOSE to raising the funds that they do.

Secondly, If you’re a fast runner and you qualified. Why do you care if I didn’t? I’m going to be three hours behind you anyways. I understand that you think I’m taking up a spot that a qualifier didn’t get, but those slots are allotted ahead of time. Boston has increased the field to ADD charity runners, not take away from the original qualifying spots.

If you want to run an elite race with NO charity or slower runners, run this race. There you go. In order to run, you have to qualify. The end.

The money that is raised through Boston’s charity program saves thousands of lives. I wish people would see the bigger picture.

I have another solution too… why not hold another marathon in Boston? Not THE Boston Marathon, but just another marathon, maybe one that has a different route? I’d totally run it. Running in Boston is exciting. For a lot of us slower runners, I’m sure we’d love to have another option to run a full marathon in that city.

So all you faster runners, stop picking on the charity runners. We trained hard AND raised money at the same time.

Runners are generally generous, understanding and social people. Why does this Boston debate bring out the worst in people year after year? Maybe I’m just taking this too personally. But I just feel that I (as a charity runner) shouldn’t be the scapegoat here.
