I can’t decide if BlogHer weekend felt like 10 days or 10 minutes. It’s crazy how many people I met and how much I learned in such a short amount of time. Overall, it was really great and I’m excited to try out some new things I learned.

Now that I’m safely back home, I can tell you where we stayed for the weekend! The La Pensione Hotel in Little Italy is one of our favorites. We stay there every time we go to San Diego since the rates are low and the location is great. IMG_6878

It’s right in the heart of Little Italy and just a block away from the Trolley.

IMG_6954
They recently updated the rooms too, so it’s got a European Chic look now. I love the grey + silver color scheme they have now!
IMG_6804

Our room had been renovated, but there were others that were completely redone from the bottom up. We asked to take a peek and they were gorgeous. Next time we’re staying in one of these!

IMG_6952

Sigh. I just love nice hotels. Especially the ones that are cute, off the beaten path, and really feel like home. (Not that my home has an awesome bathroom like this, but you know what I mean).

So back to the conference, after I had breakfast with Bob, I headed over to the Daisy Cottage Cheese Refuel & Recharge suite. I was invited to have a snack, talk about nutrition and get a spa treatment. Sign me up!
IMG_6908

Just a tid-bit from what I learned, Daisy Cottage Cheese only has three ingredients: Cultured skim milk, cream and salt. That’s it. It was a perfect mid-day snack! Thanks for the invite, ladies!
IMG_6911

I also did a paraffin hand treatment before I left too. Have you ever done that? You literally submerge your hands into piping hot wax and let it harden, then it peels off! So cool! That was definitely a first for me!

After that, I popped back into some sessions to learn some more! First up was Til Blog Do Us Part. I initially thought it was about how blogging affects relationships and marriages. I think blogging is definitely a delicate subject that your spouse and family really should be on board with. I’m lucky that I do have the support of my husband and family (love you!) However, the session mostly talked about blogging about divorce, remarriage and mixed families. Though it didn’t really apply to me, it was still interesting to hear the panel, specifically the man below, who co-writes a blog with his ex-wife about raising their children.
IMG_6914

I snuck out of that one a few minutes early to catch the end of Blog Design and I was sad to have missed the beginning of it. It really sounded like an awesome session about what makes blogs look good from font to sidebars to headers. (Kelocity needs a header, don’t you think? Working on it!)

Then lunch! As I was in line to make my plate, I did a double take and saw the beautiful Kelle from Enjoying the Small Things. I read about 200 blogs a day, and if there was ONE blog that I could recommend, it would be this one. She and her family will melt your heart, you MUST go over there right now and look. Seriously go! I was totally star struck when I saw her. And little Nella was just TOO CUTE!
IMG_6915

I’ll be back soon with the last of the BlogHer Recaps! I’m off to watch Meet Joe Black with my husband! They shot the movie at the same place where my friend had her wedding two weeks ago, so now we’re dying to see it in the film!

Breakfast with Bob! August 6, 2011

My morning started out with some Excedrin and a Vitamin Water. Man, I haven’t had a lick of alcohol in months and yet I felt hung over this morning. lol But these guys did the trick, thank goodness!  (First migraine in over a month though, this is progress!)
IMG_6892

Thankfully the headache was gone by the time I got to the conference today. And I had a really important date! Breakfast with Bob Harper, one of the trainers from The Biggest Loser.
IMG_6903

The session was sponsored by Quaker. I had some Oatmeal Squares and fruit while I drooled over listened to Bob. There’s just something about him that makes people excited about healthy living and getting fit.
IMG_6906

Some of the things he spoke about:
-Breakfast is the most important meal of the day (duh!)
-Nutrition is the #1 and #2 most important thing. Exercise is #3.
-Bob actually hates the Biggest Loser scale (haha)
-His Mantra: “Believe in yourself, trust the process, change forever”.

Fun fact: Bob and I have each run 3 marathons. If I run one more, I’ll have run more marathons than him. HAHAHA Perhaps a new goal??

BlogHer 101: I’m Exhausted!

Man, when my alarm went off yesterday, I honestly didn’t know where I was. I was supposed to do the BlogHer 5K, but I felt like I was hit by a bus. I just need one solid night of 9 hours of sleep to catch up I think. Can’t get those hours back once they’re gone!
IMG_6807

But I was pretty excited for a day full of learning and networking. I was already feeling more confident than I did the day before, and if that’s all I get out of this conference, I consider that a win.

I am not staying in the host hotel, but I always get excited when local public transportation is involved. Nerd alert. I LOVE subway maps and navigating through new towns.
IMG_6870

San Diego’s trolley reminds me of Boston. So fun to ride!
IMG_6871

IMG_6877

I found some friends and grabbed breakfast in the pavilion. I can’t believe how big this convention center is!
IMG_6808

I attended the “Newbie Breakfast” to hear a little bit about what to expect and meet some other new bloggers. The conference is organized by three amazing ladies Elisa Camahort Page, Jory Des Jardins and Lisa Stone. They are very smart women who are passionate about blogging and I was so proud to be part of the community that ties us all together.
IMG_6809

Their keynote highlighted some of the accomplishments the blogging community has made in the past few years. More women now rank blogs above corporate websites and social media when it comes to getting advice and information. I am inspired!
IMG_6817

Next up was “Blogger Speed Dating”. We got into large circles and had 90 seconds to introduce yourself and pitch your blog to someone before moving on to the next. I LOVED this. I started out a little shy with an unpolished pitch, but by the end, I found that I was able to really pinpoint what my blog was really about. “Kelocity.com is a blog about running, travel and life in Los Angeles”.

And I also met a bunch of other amazing bloggers that I’m sure will populate my Google Reader soon! I’ll share some link love later in the week.
IMG_6820

I was also happy to meet up with an old friend, Jessica who runs The Rose Run website in honor of her mom.
IMG_6822

The first thing I did was attend a “Geek Bar” session. These were great sessions because only 4-5 people were in there at a time, so you can really get your questioned answered. I learned about “Internet Sleuthing” and how to track down mean commenters, hate emailers and stalkers. Thankfully I haven’t had to deal with any of this, and I hope I never will, but it’s great to have the tools incase you do. So don’t try anything mean, I will find you! Kidding. Kind of.

After that, I took a stroll around some of the sponsor suites. Lots of fun things to explore. Like this giant sculpture made out of Twizzlers.
IMG_6826

The Hallmark Suite

IMG_6827

And Hot Wheels (this track sticks on the wall!) If I was a 12 year old boy, I would want this in my room. Such a cool idea!
IMG_6828

Then it was S’Mores time!
IMG_6834

Make your own? Don’t mind if I do! I LOVE s’mores!
IMG_6837

My marshmallow caught on fire and the lady was like “ahh, blow it out”! And I said, Oh, let me take a picture first! Priorities, right! And besides, isn’t burning it the fun part?
IMG_6836

IMG_6839

The Convention Center is RIGHT on the water, but it’s a shame I didn’t really get outside much this weekend! Hopefully that will change on Sunday!
IMG_6841

I hit up the expo one more time to pick up a few more things. Including a Tempur-pedic Travel Pillow! Score!!
IMG_6843

HAHA And I just had to share this picture. FeBreeze was there and they actually hired a guy to pose as a teenager in a messy room. But regardless of the “mess”, it smelled amazing!
IMG_6869

It felt like I just ate breakfast, but apparently that was hours ago and lunch was served! It was fun to catch up with friends again while we ate.
IMG_6844

The hilarious Amanda from ConfessionsOfAFatGirl! I missed her!
IMG_6852

In the middle of lunch, there was a Flash Mob!!!!!! OMG I was so excited. Seeing a live flash mob seriously was on my bucket list!!! They did a great job dancing to Lady Gaga!!
IMG_6850

I attended a Photography session about what makes a great photo. We looked at lots of eye candy and talked about what a photo should do. And the bottom line was that photos should connect people, places, emotions, etc. It just has to connect to something.
IMG_6857

What makes a good photo itself?
-Light (try not to use flash)
-Color
-Composition
-Subject Matter
-That Connection

I’ve been using my small point-and-shoot camera this weekend, but honestly, I need to get used to carrying my DSLR around. I need to start experimenting more, stretching my eye a little more and learning to perfect my images. I think I might start adding a “Photo-A-Day” concept to my blog and seeing where it goes. Another BlogHer breakthrough for me! I’m pumped!

When I walked out of the session I happened across some snacks! Hooray for fruit! Yum!! I am impressed with the hospitality of BlogHer so far.
IMG_6858

There are so many sessions to choose from, but the next one really stood out for me. It was about Perfecting Product Reviews. As a relatively new blogger, this was something I was really interested in learning about. It’s no secret that bloggers sometimes get the opportunity to receive free product in exchange for a blog post. But you also don’t want to compromise your readers or “sell out” in the process.

The session was led by Momspark.net, mommyniri.com and thedivinemissmommy.com.
IMG_6864

I tried to soak in as much as I could, and by the end of the day, I was beat! I called it a day and headed back to our hotel.
IMG_6867

It’s crazy that my husband has been here all weekend, but I’ve barely seen him yet! We turned right around and headed to dinner with our friends Jen and Angel. I used to live next door to them while I was growing  up and it was fun to see them again to catch up! Jen used to tutor me in math when I was in school!
IMG_6891

IMG_6890

We ate at a FABULOUS restaurant called Bankers Hill. The atmosphere was great and the food was amazing.
IMG_6885

The wall behind us was a ‘living wall’. All of those plants are real and thriving. So cool!
IMG_6884

Ok… let’s review why I need to use a better camera….

No flash:
IMG_6886

With flash:
IMG_6887

Both photos are atrocious. Sigh. You’ll just have to trust me that it was amazing. (Crispy Eggplant with Burrata cheese and artichokes).

I’m back at the conference today so I’ll be back later!

Mom’s Buffalo Chicken Dip August 3, 2011

My mouth just watered just typing the title of this post!

I’m going to do the world a favor and post a very simple, extremely delicious recipe for the most amazing Buffalo Chicken Dip you’ve ever tasted. You must be careful though because it’s so good that sometimes it makes other dishes around it feel bad.

I made it for Super Bowl Sunday this year and people loved it! (You have to understand that I don’t cook well and I don’t cook often, so when people say they actually like something I make…. I make sure I save the recipe).
IMG_6735

I have no idea where this recipe came from, so maybe I’m just the last to find out about it. But I’m sharing it for the greater good of mankind. Trust me. (But beware, it’s definitely not healthy.)

I bought a rotisserie chicken and Irving de-boned and chopped it for me. Then just mix away!
IMG_6738

BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

2 Cups Shredded Chicken
1 Cup Mayo
1/2 Cup Frank’s Hot Sauce
1 TBSP Onion
1 TSP Lemon Juice
1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Crumbled Blue Cheese

Mix Together Chicken, Mayo, Hot Sauce, Onions and Cheddar Cheese in a casserole dish. Sprinkle the top with the Blue Cheese.
Bake 20 minutes at 375*. Serve with chips!

IMG_6744

When it comes out of the oven, it’s all ooey gooey and delicious. (Note: I doubled the recipe to serve 8 people and it was perfect).
I brought this to the Hollywood Bowl this weekend and served it with Homeboy Chips.

Delicious!

Singing Stars of Hollywood August 2, 2011

We had yet another night at the Hollywood Bowl this past weekend. It was the LA Philharmonic with “The Singing Stars of Television”! It was quite the all-star cast and we had a great time. But first! The food!

We usually picnic beforehand, and it’s SO much more fun with a big group of people. We had an impressive spread this time!
IMG_6747

We had 8 people in our group (whoo hoo!) and this was the menu:
-Chicken and Beef Skewers from Zankou Chicken
-Basmati Rice from Zankou
-Buffalo Chicken Dip with chips (made by yours truly! Recipe coming tomorrow!)
-Summer Garden Salad
-Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
-Fresh Fruit
-Hummus
-Blonde Brownies
-CRUMBS CUPCAKES!
-Sparkling Lemonade

IMG_6748

Yea. It was epic.
tumblr_lp6wmgsW111qz9p9xo1_1280

I’d say the Bowl was only about half full that night (which is crazy considering how amazing the show was!) We had a whole section (or two) all to ourselves!
IMG_6750

Ok! Get Ready! Blurry pictures ahead!

First up was Michael Feinstein. He’s really talented. I was impressed at the range of his voice.
IMG_6753

Next up was Florence Henderson! Yep. THE Mrs. Brady!!! She even sang the theme song to the Brady Bunch! It was so cool!!! She’s adorable.
IMG_6758

Wayne Brady and Cheyenne Jackson also did a few numbers. Cheyenne is super cute! I guess he’s on Glee? I need to watch more TV.

But I was most excited to see Dick Van Dyk. That man is incredible! You can just tell that he’s had a career doing something that he loves. He did a bunch of songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins!!!
IMG_6766

And perhaps the best part was when he actually rapped a song with his group “The Vantastics”.
IMG_6768

I found a video of it on Youtube that you have see. Click ahead to 2:45 in the clip.

I feel so lucky to see these amazing stars live on stage! What a fun night.
