Kick Off the Holiday Weekend May 27, 2011

Los Angeles is notorious for really bad traffic. And it just gets exponentially worse during holiday weekends. Everyone gets off work early and gets on the road to get wherever they’re going. I live in “the valley” and don’t really leave my neighborhood much unless I really really have to. I just really hate traffic. But today, I had fun plans that I deemed worth driving over the hill for.

First up was lunch with my mother-in-law who was in town for a New York Los Angeles minute. We grabbed lunch at Chicken Dijon which was really good. I ordered a chicken gyro…without the chicken. hee hee It was lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. Delish!

And then I had yoga plans with the lovely Katherine in Santa Monica. And it took me almost an hour to drive from LAX to the promenade (it’s only 14 miles). And as I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway I was cursing the traffic and the slow red lights, and I looked to my left to see the Ocean. Um, how can I complain when I have gorgeous beaches to look at. It really is fun to live in California, and I really do love it.

We did a 75 yoga class that was geared towards beginners, but was still very challenging. This was the first class that I’ve ever taken where I actually felt like I could somewhat keep up. I only went into cat’s pose once. I was dripping sweat by the end. I couldn’t figure out why it was so hot in there. Why don’t they turn the AC on or open a window and let that nice ocean breeze come in? Then I looked up and noticed the HEATERS were on! I never thought in my whole life I’d ever do hot yoga. I. Hate. The. Heat. But it wasn’t that bad.
IMG_5993

I did feel quite dehydrated at the end though, so Katherine and I went to Starbucks to grab some refreshments. I got an unsweetened plain iced tea, and wolfed it down in 10 seconds.
IMG_5992

For dinner, I kept it light with some Trader Joe’s butternut squash risotto and a spinach salad with a drizzle of honey.
IMG_5995

I don’t eat enough protein. It is something I’ve always struggled with. I need to learn more about beans and other non-meat proteins because I do realize I should probably have more.

Enter… my protein packed dessert.
IMG_5996

I blended up some skim milk, 1 frozen banana, 1 cup of frozen blueberries, large handful of raw spinach and 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder. It was SO good! I also added in a handful of raw oats too. I LOVED the texture. It really did taste like ice-cream, but still had over 25g of protein. I will definitely be making this again. And no, you can’t taste the spinach.

Even though I’m completely exhausted from this week and did 75 minutes of yoga tonight, I still made myself go out on my daily walk and crank out 3.6 miles in one hour while chatting on the phone with Irving. (I love when we talk on the phone, it makes me feel like we’re dating or something. “you hang up first, no you hang up first… wait, you didn’t hang up”. HAHA, I miss puppy love!)

In three days, I’ve walked over 11 miles and burned over 1,000 calories… just by walking ALONE. I’m really psyched that I’m sticking to this so far.
Here’s to a great three day weekend!

Keeping the Momentum Going! May 26, 2011

I’m making a commitment to walking everyday. With my new health coach, pedometer, runkeeper and Chic Runner’s 40 Day Challenge, I really am psyched to get out and walk every day.

Erika lives 1 mile from my house, so instead of driving over there to say hi, I walked there. Then we went on a walk together, and then I walked home.  I can’t even believe it was four miles total, it was fun to chat. And when I was by myself, I read more blogs.

Walking really isn’t that hard when you can commit to it and enjoy it!

When I got home, I had another bowl of Irving’s AMAZING chicken soup. Oh man, those carrots and those parsnips. I wish you could taste it!

Tonight, I’m going to continue to back my computer up. I’m preparing to completely redo my system and start with a clean slate. I put so much crap on it, it was starting to slow down a lot. I have a LOT of files to transfer first though. Ugh!

We slept really well, as we usually do in Vegas (those room darkening blinds will get you every time!)

Poor Irving was dealing with a gnarly cold while we were there. But we came prepared.
Las Vegas May 2011 (38)

He was a trooper though. I told him that I had a solution to all of his problems:

I mean, there isn’t much in life that munchins can’t fix, right?
I asked for ONE munchkin and she gave me FOUR!
Las Vegas May 2011 (34)

Ohhh, how I miss Dunkins! Then we got in the car and headed back over to the Wynn.
Las Vegas May 2011 (33)

Vegas is full of strange things. Here’s the Palace Station Casino (where OJ simpson got arrested!)
Las Vegas May 2011 (30)

And the Sahara Hotel is closed! So sad! Another one bites the (desert) dust.
Las Vegas May 2011 (32)

We didn’t have any real plans for the day, but they suggested a hike in Red Rock Canyon! I’d never been either, so we seized the opportunity!
Las Vegas May 2011 (29)

Just a half hour drive from the strip, and we were there!
Las Vegas May 2011 (26)

I just don’t understand why they call it Red Rock Canyon!
Las Vegas May 2011 (17)

We’re so lucky to have such gorgeous landscapes in our country. I’m really glad we got to see this!
Las Vegas May 2011 (24)

We started at the visitor’s center and learned a little bit about the area.
Las Vegas May 2011 (22)

And have a little fun…

Check out this stitch that I made! This was five photos I stitched into one! (Click to enlarge!)

There is a 13 mile scenic loop and all along the way, you can pull over and hike. It’s a great set up!

First stop was the big red rock, duh!

Everyone climbed up to see the cliffs below…

But I’m lame and played it safe on firm ground. (When did I become such a wuss?)

I ain’t going up there! I’m fine riiiiight down here!

These pictures aren’t doing this place ANY justice. You have to come out and see it in person!

There were so many trails that looked incredible, and someday, we’ll come back to do them all. But this time, we only did the Ice Box Canyon trail.
Las Vegas May 2011 (112)

Somewhere in there, there was supposed to be a waterfall!
Las Vegas May 2011 (111)

It was such a cool hike. Unlike any terrain I’ve ever seen before.

Sisters!
Las Vegas May 2011 (109)

We basically hiked on a dried up river bed (oh, spoiler alert, the waterfall was dried up in the desert heat!)

Las Vegas May 2011 (106)

The whole hike was about 2.5 miles, and in the high noon heat, it ended up being perfect.

It was fun to scramble over rocks (although I was on the lookout for rattlesnakes!)

And then we got to the place where the waterfall should have been… The supposed “ice box” part of the trail…

Hee Hee. I’ll have to come back in the winter to see it filled with water! So cool!

And then we started the hike back to the car.

The whole park was gorgeous, if you’re heading out west, definitely make the drive, even if you don’t hike.

By then it was 4pm and we were starving for lunch! We had bought a groupon for a place called Bambino’s East Coast Pizzeria. It’s owned by Bostonians who opened up a restaurant out here! I was so excited! They even painted their walls the same color as the Green Monster!
Las Vegas May 2011 (88)

We got some chicken fingers that were DELISH!
Las Vegas May 2011 (87)

And a pizza that was ginormous!
Las Vegas May 2011 (86)

Sufficiently stuffed, we hopped back in the car to begin the four hour drive back to LA! This time with a few more passengers!
Las Vegas May 2011 (84)

Wait, where’s Irving?
Las Vegas May 2011 (85)

Half way, we were in serious need of some fuel… enter, Starbucks!
Las Vegas May 2011 (82)

DUDE! Have you tried their new Coconut Mocha Frappacino? It’s amazing. If you like coconut, you will LOVE this!
Las Vegas May 2011 (83)

What a great weekend! It was fun to experience both sides of vegas. The Pool/Casino/Food side and the Outdoors/Nature side. So much fun!

Choo Choo! The Healthy Train! May 24, 2011

Remember the time I worked out with a trainer and lost 20 pounds before my wedding? Remember I used to count calories, drink protein shakes and go for daily runs? That healthy lifestyle now feels like a distant memory to me now. What Happened? Marriage happened! A life of gluttonous eating, world traveling and a profound contentness happened. And all my healthy habits vanished with my single-dom.

Last week, at a blogger event, the girls asked me when my “tipping point” was for healthy living. I kinda stared back dumbfounded. I said that I really haven’t hit my tipping point yet. But that’s kind of a lame excuse. I’m not living healthy because I haven’t had a turning point yet. What? The turning point is NOW. Right here. This is my tipping point.

Well, can you hear that? The rumbling in the distance? The fluttering of birds overhead? The faint choo-choo-ing of an on-coming train? It’s the healthy train, and I’m jumping aboard. For real this time. I’m going to DO this. And I have a plan.

  • I now have a healthy living coach who made a plan for me, and will call monthly to check in and make sure I’m on track for reaching my goals.
  • At least 30 minutes of cardio most days. I told her realistically, I will aim for 6 days a week. 30 minutes isn’t that hard.
  • When I get my pedometer, I’m aiming for at least 10,000 steps per day (about 5 miles)
  • Begin a real strength training plan, starting at once a week until the soreness wears off.
  • Eat more whole foods and less packaged, processed and frozen things

I am inspired daily by the blogs and articles I read. And it’s time to act on that inspiration. I will be charting my activity daily on the blog!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner tonight consisted of whole foods! I am very aware of the lack of protein in this meal. That is definitely something I’m working on nutritionally.
First up, I cut up some cute little potatoes:
IMG_5778
And tossed them in a bag with some olive oil, parsley, dill and some other stuff:
IMG_5781
What’s the “other stuff”? A little of this and a little of that:
IMG_5783
I also roasted some Trader Joes asparagas with lemon pepper:
IMG_5787
Served with a side of spinach with a drizzle of honey:
Not bad for day one of the “let’s not eat crap for dinner” campaign, no?
Keep the inspiration coming!
Eagle Rock Brewery: Girl’s Night May 18, 2011
Ok, I admit. Having a post about going to a brewery slightly contradicts my “I don’t really drink” post a few days ago. But like I said, I don’t need to drink, and when I do I definitely don’t overdo it. This was a beer tasting event, and that’s just what we did. Tasted some really amazing beers.
The Eagle Rock Brewery in Glendale hosts monthly events just for women. Each night has a theme and last night was ‘Bieres De Champagne”. It was a sampling of sparking beers that could almost pass as…. champagne!
IMG_5803
I went with some of my favorite bloggers, Kaitlin and Katherine!
I made sure to represent with my nametag. Hello, my name is kelocity.com !
IMG_5818
IMG_5804
They went through each beer, one at a time and described how they make it, why they like it and what it should taste like. This was very fun for me since I know nothing about beer.
IMG_5811
IMG_5807
The first one was Deus from Belgium. This one was sweet, they told us to look for hints of honey, and they were definitely there. I really liked it.
IMG_5805
Plus beer that comes in wine bottles is fun. I’d never seen that before. Is it common?
IMG_5808
The second one was Maltose Falcons Brut that was made by a homebrew club in Woodland Hills. It was FABULOUS. My favorite of the night for sure. It had a lot of flavors that really did dance around my mouth. I never really knew what people meant when they say that, but this one definitely did.
IMG_5810
The third was Lifemans Cuvee-Brut from Belgium and it tasted like grape soda (in a good way). Maybe like an Italian soda. The good kind. It was so sweet.
IMG_5813
And lastly, we had the Malheur Brut Noir from Belgium. They said that there was “chocolate in the nose”. If you focused really hard, that was definitely there. I don’t usually like dark beer, but this one was different. It was delicious.
IMG_5815
The tasting room was a lot of fun, I’d definitely go back to try some new ones.
IMG_5817
It was a fun night out with the girls and I really enjoyed trying some beers that I’d probably never think to order in a restaurant or a bar. But maybe now I’ll actually read the descriptions on the menus and choose something fun next time.
Katherine sent us home with a bag of four of her Ah-Mazing macaroons. Seriously, these things are like crack. There’s a reason one of them is now missing from the picture….
IMG_5820
Ok, that was a lie. They are all now missing. I don’t know where they went. Don’t look at me!
