This morning, I met my group, the Los Angeles Racers at Balboa Park for a run.

The guys are an amazing group of runners. Couldn’t ask for a better group.

I ran the five mile loop with my friend, Valerie (we met in an Italian class a few years ago!)

My legs are totally fried. After not really training, running a half-marathon and taking a tread and tone class, my lower body is totally beat up. I’ve been stretching, but it felt nice to give them a good jog to loosen them up a bit. I was still sore after, but not nearly as stiff. It took us about three miles to find our stride, but it was a great run. ((Zensah Running sleeves = still a success!))

For lunch today, Irving and I decided to do a ‘dinner for lunch’ theme. We never have big weekend lunches, and it was nice to cook during the day for a change.

We cut up chicken and added a spice rub to it and grilled it to perfection.

On the side, we roasted some vegetables in the oven (potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic and rosemary).

What a great, filling and healthy lunch! (I’m taking half of this to work for lunch tomorrow!)

I am almost done reading Meb Keflezighi’s book, and he keeps talking about the importance of icing after a long run. I knew my sore legs could really use an ice bath, so I gave in.

I filled the tub halfway with cold water, and dumped my entire freezer drawer of ice into it. The key is to keep your upper body warm (hooded sweatshirt is a MUST!) I could only sit in it for three minutes or so, but it was like magic. My muscles feel 10 times better tonight. Definitely worth braving the cold.

Winner of the Celebrity Fitness Giveaway will be announced tonight!

To say my legs are sore would be an understatement. I admit I wasn’t properly trained for this race, and my muscles are definitely paying for it now. I see an ice bath in my future.

Tonight, I rolled on my new foam roller for 15 minutes or so. ooooh! It hurt so good!

My IT band, quads and hamstrings are feeling it the most this time.

IMG_3077

But no shin pain! Hooray for compression socks!

Tonight, we made the first of our freezer full of Dream Dinners.
IMG_3071

Paired with some steamed green beans, and we were in business!
IMG_3095

And for dessert, I will be snacking on this beauty! A treat from my friend Erica

That would be a red velvet whoopie pie! DELICIOUS! Thanks!!

We’re off on a two mile walk and then relaxing for the rest of the night!

Life in the Arizona Desert

In Phoenix, we stayed at the Legacy Resort. It was a timeshare that we scored through a third party website. It wasn’t the nicest place we’ve ever stayed (I’ll leave that title up to the Encore in Vegas!) but it was comfortable, clean and nice. And Irving played the golf course twice while we were there.

Monday, we laid out by the pool (in the shade!) and read our books. It was nice to relax since we don’t do much of that at home. Oh vacations, how I love you.

When we got hungry, we headed over the the clubhouse for lunch before our long drive back.
IMG_3063

The scenery was so pretty. I love the desert landscapes.
IMG_3064

I had an amazing Taco salad. It hit the spot. (I donated most of my shell to Irving, and he shared some fries).
IMG_3065

Then we got on the road right away, hoping to get back home at a decent hour.
IMG_3066

So cool to see these big old cacti along the road.

The whole way back we listened to old NPR episodes of This American Life. I love that show. The stories are so well told and they don’t make me feel dumb when they tell them.

When we were an hour outside of LA, we decided to stop at “Old Spaghetti Factory” for a quick over an hour bite to eat.

Cooking in Bulk! January 15, 2011

We all know by now what a challenge it is for me to meal plan and cook rounded meals consistently. I always have one or two meals I’m excited about per week, and the rest of the time, it’s thrown together or we have missing ingredients. I’m hoping this will all change with time when we start a family someday. (Is there hope?)

That’s one of the reasons why we keep going back to Dream Dinners. It’s a great concept: you go in and prepare 36 servings of meals in about two hours. And you go home with a freezer full of dishes you created yourself, all ready to go when you want them. Sounds good to me.

We’ve been about four times in the past and for us, it’s definitely worth it. You know they’ll have everything you need to make each recipe work.
IMG00032-20110114-2029

When you get there, they give you aprons, but we prefer to bring our own. It’s just more fun that way.
IMG00028-20110114-1906

We had a few friends join us this time, which was fun. We could chat and cook at the same time.

A little wine always helps too!
IMG00034-20110114-2030

If anyone is interested in trying it out in the LA area, let me know!

So excited to have real meals for dinner! I’ll share a few of them on the blog as we eat them. Buon Appetito!

Preparing for Phoenix! January 13, 2011

Wow, I’ve totally lost my groove for planning for a race weekend. It’s only been a few months, but I’m feeling a little bit anxious. I used to be all into it. I’d have everything all laid out and packed up. But this time, I kind of don’t want to pack. I wish it would just appear in my suitcase without much thought.

So my husband went to Target tonight and came back with some presents!

Heineken Light cans! He claims they will fit better into his golf bag when he’s out on the course.
They’re taller and thinner than usual cans. Hey man, can’t argue with that!
IMG_2895

He told me I could have one tonight because they are “only 90 calories”. (Says the man who ate half a jar of Nutella in one sitting tonight!) But I have to give him credit, beer was an excellent idea to help with the packing.

IMG_2893

I rocked out quite the list.

Now… if only I can manage to get it all in a bag tonight….
