So Cal Ragnar starts early Friday morning (but our team is meeting tomorrow night, so really, it starts in 24 hours!) I am so excited. I’m not really sure what to expect, but I think it’s better that way. My husband is a little nervous for me because I’m the type of person who REALLY needs 9 hours of sleep per night. Don’t worry, team, I won’t be cranky!

I am packing everything up tonight and saying goodbye to my husband (and my bed) til late Saturday!

Man, I hope I have everything! Everything I bring has to fit inside one little gym bag. Each van has six runners, a driver, a navigator and a camera crew! It’ll be close quarters!

My team sounds pretty awesome. I wish I could tell you more about what our theme is! Here’s a hint….
IMG_5315

Oh, that doesn’t really help… here’s another hint… I printed something up at Kinkos…
IMG_5317

Ok, that doesn’t help either… do you really want a hint? Here it is (since I hate secrets!)
IMG_5320

Heck yes. Chuck Norris will be on our van. Ragnar, here we come!

Follow me live during the whole two day event as we run 200 miles from LA to San Diego. I’ll be tweeting the whole time here: @Kelocity !

Remember I told you a while back that I’ll be participating in the Nike+ Event, She Runs LA ? Well, boy do I have good news for you!

4 Miles. Boom! April 10, 2011

The Ragnar Relay is just five days away! I definitely don’t want to have ‘dead legs’ (which sometimes happens to me when I don’t run for a few days), so this week, I want to make sure I do a couple of miles each day. Not too much, but just enough to get the blood moving and my legs ready.

This morning I had a banana and some peanut butter and headed out the door. It was PERFECT weather, low 50s, cool breeze. Ideal for running, although it did warm up towards the end.

I had trance music pumping through my ipod (Fun Fact: I love Trance and Techno music!) and I just enjoyed the run.

While Running, I….

…ran past Warner Brothers Studios (I love living in LA!) and I saw a poster for the 40th Anniversary DVD release of A Clockwork Orange. Wow, 40 years? It’s a strange movie, but I really liked it!

…freaked out when I thought a pit bull was chasing me (it turned out to just be a white lab who wanted to play).

…realized that I really like the dresses the lady in the T-Mobile billboards is wearing.

In the end, I ran a little over four miles, but I stopped the Garmin right at 4.00 because I really like round numbers.

I really felt like I could have run another 3-4 miles, but I was happy to finish strong knowing I had more in the tank. I hope that’s the case next week during the race too!

YAY Sweat! Ew!
IMG_5277

I was excited to try some Coconut Water today. I hear the electrolytes in it help hydrate you better than water can. And I love all things coconut, so I thought I would love it.
IMG_5278

Turns out, not so much. It had a strange smell that I couldn’t get over. I drank half and gave the rest to Irving. So sad, I really wanted to love it.

Maybe I’d like it better if it was served out of an actual coconut with a straw. Yes. This looks much better.

Squeezing it in! March 31, 2011

I went to a health seminar yesterday that was about ‘living a healthier life’. A lot of it was information I already knew, but sometimes it’s a nice refresher to learn why it’s important and pick up a few new tricks. The theme of the class was ‘everything in moderation’, and ‘move your body more’. Duh, rocket science, right?

A few easy ways to move more:

  • Whenever you go up or down a flight of stairs, turn around and go up and down again before moving on
  • When you’re on the phone, pace back and forth (Irving does this and easily walks a few extra miles a day (seriously, he wears a pedometer to prove it)!
  • When you’re washing dishes, do leg lifts or calf raises
  • Walk whenever you can!

All that info motivated me, and when I got home from work, I turned around to go for a run! I intended to do a 5K, but when I got back and mapped it, it turned out to only be 2.6 miles. But hey, I moved, right? It felt so great. There were so many people outside last night! Everyone is enjoying the longer days I think.

One thing I learned while running: Green Day has the BEST songs for keeping a steady pace. All their songs have the perfect tempo for my running speed. It keeps me going!

I blame the warmer temps, but it was H-O-T!

Only one thing sounded refreshing:
IMG_4980

Shocktop with Fresh Oranges! Delish! (Opened with my new Contiki bottle opener! Sweet!)
IMG_4984

IMG_4989

We had some baked Ravioli for dinner (another reason why I wanted to run!)

The bunnies guarded my beer. Mmm!
IMG_4998

The sunset was GORGEOUS last night. The sky was a bright pink color, so nice!

PS… Those endorphins are TOTALLY kicking in. It feels so good to sweat a little!

Laurie Takes Chicago March 28, 2011

My little sister, Laurie, is in grad school and living in Chicago at the moment. My college days consisted of making movies and watching films, but she’s studying chemistry, pharmacy and biology (clearly I didn’t get the brains in my family).

Funny how neither of us lives in Boston anymore! (Picture circa 2006)

This past weekend, one of her High School friends visited while she was on Spring Break, and they signed up for a Chicago City Running Tour.
025

They did the 5K option, but they offer all lengths (even up to a full marathon tour of the city!) It’s run by a crazy runner, Marlin, who has completed over 60 marathons (and one in every US state!) He leads runs throughout the city that combine a great cardio workout, with a sightseeing tour.
018

On the day they went, they were the only two participants. Bonus: Marllin takes photos of you throughout the whole run!
014

They also offer tours in other cities around the country (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, DC and Charlestown — No Los Angeles yet, but I hope they expand out here!)

They hit some of the best spots in Chicago, makes me a little jealous, it’s such a great city. He gave them history about all the landmarks as they passed them.
012

Run, Laurie, Run! (Make a sister proud!)
022

The Sprint to the finish! LOVE this picture!

Not a bad way to spend a morning! I’ll have to remember this company when I’m in a new city. So cool!

If you’re interested, check out their website.

City Running Tours didn’t compensate me for this post, in fact, I’m pretty sure they have no idea I even wrote it. I’m just proud of my sister and really excited about such a cool concept.

Would you consider doing a running tour of a new city? Better than hitting the gym, right?

An Unplanned Mud Run March 27, 2011

When I woke up this morning, it was raining in LA. I decided to meet my group for a run anyways. I really didn’t expect anyone else to be there, but surprisingly, eight other people came! It was a delicate run though, there was mud everywhere and it was very slippery. The little river nearby completely flooded and when the water receded, lots of stuff was left behind.

We were particularly worried about this little guy! We found him in the middle of the road! He was missing one claw, but was still doing his best to shimmy to the side of the road. We named him Sebastian.

By the time we were done (4.8 miles later), we were covered in mud.

Now I’m in sweatpants trying to warm up. I think I might go make a cup of coffee (with Bailey’s Chocolate Creamer of course!)
