Squeezing it in! March 31, 2011

I went to a health seminar yesterday that was about ‘living a healthier life’. A lot of it was information I already knew, but sometimes it’s a nice refresher to learn why it’s important and pick up a few new tricks. The theme of the class was ‘everything in moderation’, and ‘move your body more’. Duh, rocket science, right?

A few easy ways to move more:

  • Whenever you go up or down a flight of stairs, turn around and go up and down again before moving on
  • When you’re on the phone, pace back and forth (Irving does this and easily walks a few extra miles a day (seriously, he wears a pedometer to prove it)!
  • When you’re washing dishes, do leg lifts or calf raises
  • Walk whenever you can!

All that info motivated me, and when I got home from work, I turned around to go for a run! I intended to do a 5K, but when I got back and mapped it, it turned out to only be 2.6 miles. But hey, I moved, right? It felt so great. There were so many people outside last night! Everyone is enjoying the longer days I think.

One thing I learned while running: Green Day has the BEST songs for keeping a steady pace. All their songs have the perfect tempo for my running speed. It keeps me going!

I blame the warmer temps, but it was H-O-T!

Only one thing sounded refreshing:

Shocktop with Fresh Oranges! Delish! (Opened with my new Contiki bottle opener! Sweet!)

IMG_4989

We had some baked Ravioli for dinner (another reason why I wanted to run!)

The bunnies guarded my beer. Mmm!

The sunset was GORGEOUS last night. The sky was a bright pink color, so nice!

PS… Those endorphins are TOTALLY kicking in. It feels so good to sweat a little!

My little sister, Laurie, is in grad school and living in Chicago at the moment. My college days consisted of making movies and watching films, but she’s studying chemistry, pharmacy and biology (clearly I didn’t get the brains in my family).

Funny how neither of us lives in Boston anymore! (Picture circa 2006)

This past weekend, one of her High School friends visited while she was on Spring Break, and they signed up for a Chicago City Running Tour.
025

They did the 5K option, but they offer all lengths (even up to a full marathon tour of the city!) It’s run by a crazy runner, Marlin, who has completed over 60 marathons (and one in every US state!) He leads runs throughout the city that combine a great cardio workout, with a sightseeing tour.
018

On the day they went, they were the only two participants. Bonus: Marllin takes photos of you throughout the whole run!
014

They also offer tours in other cities around the country (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, DC and Charlestown — No Los Angeles yet, but I hope they expand out here!)

They hit some of the best spots in Chicago, makes me a little jealous, it’s such a great city. He gave them history about all the landmarks as they passed them.

Run, Laurie, Run! (Make a sister proud!)

The Sprint to the finish! LOVE this picture!

Not a bad way to spend a morning! I’ll have to remember this company when I’m in a new city. So cool!

If you’re interested, check out their website.

City Running Tours didn’t compensate me for this post, in fact, I’m pretty sure they have no idea I even wrote it. I’m just proud of my sister and really excited about such a cool concept.

Would you consider doing a running tour of a new city? Better than hitting the gym, right?

An Unplanned Mud Run March 27, 2011

When I woke up this morning, it was raining in LA. I decided to meet my group for a run anyways. I really didn’t expect anyone else to be there, but surprisingly, eight other people came! It was a delicate run though, there was mud everywhere and it was very slippery. The little river nearby completely flooded and when the water receded, lots of stuff was left behind.

We were particularly worried about this little guy! We found him in the middle of the road! He was missing one claw, but was still doing his best to shimmy to the side of the road. We named him Sebastian.

By the time we were done (4.8 miles later), we were covered in mud.

Now I’m in sweatpants trying to warm up. I think I might go make a cup of coffee (with Bailey’s Chocolate Creamer of course!)

Sunday Runday March 6, 2011

It occurred to me this weekend that since Ragnar is coming up in about a month, even though I’m already running, maybe I should look at the training schedule they recommend. Well I was surprised (I’m not sure why) that I’m supposed to be doing multiple runs per day to condition for the different legs during the event. Oops! So I printed it out and made a few changes to make it fit my schedule.

Today, I was supposed to do a 25 minute run and then later in the day, another 25 minute run…. But my team was running at the Hansen Dam, so I went ahead and ran 5 miles this morning, and I’ll do another 2 miles tonight. It was a GREAT run this morning. I was chatting with some friends and I forgot I was even running. It was awesome. The sun was hot, but it didn’t matter, it was so nice.

I feel so good right now. It’s all about making choices in your life that make you feel good and live healthy.

I think I’m ready for spring. YAY!

Touch the Toes and Back… February 27, 2011

Last night, we went to a new bar that opened called ‘Tiki No’. It used to be this great hidden bar called ‘Match’ that didn’t even have a sign on the door, you just had to know which door to enter through and it was awesome. But now it’s got a neon sign and flames coming out of the roof, you can’t miss it.
IMG_3878

The inside looks like a sunken pirate ship or something. Very cool. But you had to fight  your way to the bar and stalk people sitting at the tables to sit down.
IMG_3879

The drinks have a tropical theme. Irving got the Mai Tai and I got the Blue Hawaiian (light on the rum). I also ate the pineapple, are you supposed to do that? Who cares, it was good.
IMG_3880

It wasn’t as good as our ‘Blue Lagoon’ drinks from the wedding, but it was close.

It was a fun night, but we got back home early because I had to be up to go for a RUN! My group headed to Griffith Park today. It was a gorgeous day. Weather was in the 50s, with blue skies. You could see the snow in the mountains too. Because of the construction, our route was cut short and I ended up doing 4.65 miles in an hour. It was a slow jog, and I did 4:2 intervals the whole way. We started at the LA Zoo and headed to Los Feliz Blvd and back. You have to touch the toes of Mr. Griffith before turning around and going back.

Strangely, I could smell a mix of cotton candy and horse droppings the whole time, it would alternate between the two.
Oh, the joys of running in public parks. Just thought I’d share.
IMG_3881

I saw another guy wearing this shirt too! (It was from the 2005 Run Hit Wonder). We both did the head nod and said ‘nice shirt’ to each other.

Have a great Sunday! Can’t wait for the Oscars!
